Their first years fell in the terrible Napoleonic time. The Harz province belonged to the Kingdom of Westfalen, in which Napoleon's brother Jerome ruled as King. They often told their children about it. Outside in the yard stood an outdoor oven, where from ancient times they had baked their bread themselves. Beside the oven they dug a hole, wherein they hid their provisions, and then they piled wood over it. When they wished to harvest the grain it had been ridden down by horsemen. How often they had to flee to the forest. There was a cave, of which others did not know, into which they crept, deep into the mountain. When they were at the end of the cave, their light went out, that is their candle, or oil lamp.
