INTRODUCTORY NOTE
by Nancy Agnew PECHE

Peter, Wilhelm and Johannes KRIEGBAUM, sons of the immigrant Johann Wilhelm KRIEGBAUM and his wife Anna Barbara RETTIG~RETTICH, settled in Stark and Summit Counties, Ohio circa 1813-1814. Many of the tombstones listed below are those of their descendants. In 1820, Peter KRIEGBAUM (born 18 Nov 1852) lived in Lake Twp., Stark County - probably near George and Catharine SHUTT, since they both were on the same page (p. 180) in the federal census of that year. In 1820, Peter's brother Johannes KRIEGBAUM (born 1762) was enumerated in Stark County's Bethlehem Twp. (p. 176). Johannes and his wife Maria Elizabeth EMMET are buried in the Sherman Church Cemetery. Esther WEYGANDT POWELL, who transcribed many of these tombstones in the 1970's, relates this story about the Lutheran Evangelical Cemetery (aka "Old Lutheran Cemetery"): "This cemetery was completely destroyed in the 1960's and made into a church parking lot. Some of the stones [were] removed to the nearby newer cemetery and others destroyed.  This cemetery was by the Lutheran Church. I had copied it many years ago but lost the records. Later records were "contributed". In June 1962 I tried again to copy the inscriptions but before I had them completed I was shocked when I arrived there to find only a parking ground. There had been a stack of tombstones along the edge of the cemetery. There were some very nice stones. Revolutionary soldiers were buried here. It [the burying ground] was on SR 619 near SR 8, near Summit and Portage County borders."

Comments by Nancy Agnew PECHE:
Alice KREIGHBAUM was the daughter of Jacob W. KREIGHBAUM [c.1810 - 1871] and his second wife, Mahala FEATHER [1825 - 1901]. Mahala is said to be buried at Greenlawn - and thus may well be the Mahala whose gravestone is pictured above. Jacob W. KREIGHBAUM and his first wife, Elizabeth DREECE (died 1841), were buried in the Lutheran Evangelical Cemetery (aka "Old Lutheran Cemetery" - see preface note above). The fate of their tombstones is unknown.
