MESSAGE FROM CAROL:
By the time you receive this newsletter our great nation will be celebrating another birthday of Independence, the reason many of our KRIEGBAUM, KRIGBAUM, KRICHBAUM, CREEKBAUM, KREIGHBAUM, KREIGBAUM, CREEKPAUM, etc. members are here, due to the original four immigrants [Johannes PHILIP, Johannes WILHELM, Johannes ADAM and Johan CONRAD] settling in America to have freedom in their lives. We as Americans have much to be thankful for.
Speaking of members and the Kriegbaum Heritage, we are receiving letters from a number of new K-C-BAUMs either for membership or inquiries about our newsletter. We do thank all of you for passing the word along to others about our family group.
REUNION TIME is coming rapidly now. We invite you to make plans NOW, TODAY to attend one or both of the reunions. The contact with other families is great. Details about both the MINI-REUNION and the CENTER, MO REUNION is later in the newsletter. DO TRY TO ATTEND.
We always need your family sheets or data if you have not already sent it, both on yourselves, your children as well as the past generations. Why not sit down and send it to us RIGHT NOW. We would appreciate your effort to do so.
KEEP IN TOUCH.
SEND YOUR FAMILY DATA.
ATTEND A REUNION.
This helps keep our newsletter and family heritage as great as it is now.
This issue deals primarily with JACOB KRIGBAUM OF Ralls County, MO. The Cover is a sketch of The Ralls County Courthouse in New London. EMERY CREEKBAUM of Marco Island, Florida did this from some very poor copies I sent to him. He is to be appreciated by our membership for his art contributions.
A year's membership costs $6.00 per year. Why not join now or give a year's membership to someone else for a gift.
REUNION SEPTEMBER 1982:
The annual KRIGBAUM FAMILY REUNION was held in Center, MO.
This is where our ancestors settled so many years ago.
We're from the Okla. clan, it was the first time for us
Who knows, maybe next year we can all charter a bus.
It was a surprise to see the good number that turned out
Getting acquainted, playing games and having fun no doubt
We're all related in one way or another, or so we are told
Some looked enough alike, could be from the original mold.
One good thing we all inherited, is the knack to cook
Wonder how many are like we, hardly ever use a book
The variety of good food brought in, we really appreciate
For those who helped in the kitchen, every thing was great.
We looked at old pictures and swapped stories to see where we fit
Found we all started out KRIGBAUM's, regardless of how you spell it
The meeting was called to order and all the business was done
Then the prizes and gifts were awarded to the appropriate one.
Each person should be commended for the work that they do
Digging in the Archives, old records, going to cemeteries too
Armed with THAT sickle, KAY and CAROL set out to find
Another generation, hoping their grave stones had be signed.
The resemblance do not stop with just the above
Most started from large families, all filled with love
If you haven't attended this reunion, Why not give it a trial?
The hospitality is the greatest, it's worth every single mile.
JO KRIGBAUM PROVOST
We have so much talent in the membership of The Kriegbaum Heritage. The above poem was written by JO KRIGBAUM PROVOST last year after she and several of her sisters and her brother attended the reunion. We do appreciate receiving these items for our newsletter.
BROWSING TIME:
Anyone attending the reunion who would like to go through all the material and data we have is invited SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1983 to Quincy, IL 1112 Monroe Street to do so. Anytime after 9:00 a.m. to whenever with a sandwich time in the evening. Since KAY and I can no longer carry everything to the reunion, we offer this time to you.
* PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WILL BE HERE. *

KAY'S REPORT:
In the last issue I said I would do a report on JACOB KRIGBAUM of Ralls County, Missouri. Before I start, please refer back to the July 1982 issue in which I did a report on CONRAD K-C-BAUM of Frederick and Allegany Counties, MD who was JACOB's father.
JACOB KRIGBAUM was born ___April 1769 in Frederick Co. MD. He married MARIA (Mary) REIS (RICE) -- 9 Aug 1791 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick County, MD.

KAY'S REPORT CONTINUES
Before I go any further, I must tell you, this is the man that took me over a year to find and CAROL many more years. When I started doing genealogy, there was another KRIGBAUM family living in Quincy, IL. Their names were CAROL and GENE KRIGBAUM. I called CAROL one evening and she invited me over. I went and she had gobs of information on the KRIGBAUM's of Ralls Co., MO. She told me that JACOB KRIGBAUM was born in Maryland somewhere and that she learned from LENA HICKLIN that the old KRIGBAUM's came from Kentucky. She couldn't find them any where in Kentucky but did find CONRAD CRICKBAUM in Frederick Co., MD 1790 Census and that is where she was stuck. We pooled all of our resources together and started our research in Kentucky. This is where we wasted a whole year. While looking for JACOB KRIGBAUM in Kentucky, we looked for only one spelling, and that was KRIGBAUM. Finally, we hired a researcher in Kentucky and lo and behold, he found our JACOB under the name of CREEKPOND. It just never occurred to us to look for that spelling. Once we started looking for all the other spellings, we found gobs of the K-C-Baums. Mrs. HICKLIN was also referring to a different JACOB. She was talking of old JACOB KRIGBAUM’s son JACOB KRIGBAUM. The above was a very important lesson which was, never look to just one spelling and JACOB .. WHO?
Also another note on the surname. I corresponded with Dr. JAMES WOLF, who is now deceased, and he told me that his most favorite of the names' spelling was CRITCHPAUMB. The person that he corresponded with thought that the name was Indian. I ran a query in the Kentucky Ancestors about three years ago looking for MICHAEL KRIGBAUM and received a letter from a historian told me about MICHAEL and that the people there thought CREEKPAUM was an Indian name also. The JACOB that I am supposed to be doing the report on and MICHAEL CREEKPAUM were brothers. As you can see the spelling of the name does cause us problems.
Now back to JACOB KRIGBAUM ........ After JACOB KRIGBAUM and MARIA (REIS) were married, they left Maryland along with JACOB's brother MICHAEL and went to Jessamine County, KY. On the 1800 Tax of Jessamine County, KY was JACOB KRICKBAUM.

Evidently, JACOB KRIGBAUM was in Nicholasville, Jessamine County, KY for about 30 years. There are no wills recorded for the family, the deed books likewise show nothing even though JACOB CREEKBAUM was a landowner. Under Jessamine County Court Orders were several references to "JACOB" also to a "ADAM CREBAUGH"; who we believe was of the same family. These court orders were printed twice in the past, (1) in the fall 1978 issue and again in the April 1980 issue so refer back to these issues for more information on the CONRAD K-C-baum issue. (Note: if you do not have these two issues, we will copy them for you at cost which is $1.50 each. We are out of these issues.)
In 1830 we find JACOB KRIGBAUM showing up in Missouri.

JACOB isn't in Missouri too long before he dies. He left a will in which he names his children, dated 2 April 1834 in Ralls County, MO. This will is printed in full in this issue.
Now I will do a brief sketch on each of his children.
Children of JACOB KRIGBAUM and MARIA (Rice) REIS:
# 1. JOHN KRIGBAUM b. 1793 in Frederick Co., MD.
He married SARAH ORGAN in Dec. 1815, in Jessamine County, KY.
This is where my self, KAY JAMES, descends. JOHN KRIGBAUM shows up in the 1840 Ralls Co., MO census.
JOHN KRIGBAUM and SARAH ORGAN had nine children:
SOLOMON KRIGBAUM
JOHN KRIGBAUM, Jr.
MAHALA KRIGBAUM
SARAH KRIGBAUM
GEORGE W. KRIGBAUM
MARY JANE KRIGBAUM
WILLIAM O. KRIGBAUM

KAY'S REPORT CONTINUES:
After SARAH ORGAN's death, JOHN KRIGBAUM marries several times.
According to marriage records of Ralls County MO.:
JOHN KRIGBAUM .........m. 18 Jan 1852 -- MARY BOWLIN
JOHN KRIGBAUM ........ m. 21 Feb 1853 -- JANE M. WHITE
JOHN KRIGBAUM, Sr. . m. 13 Feb 1856 -- LUCY STUMP and
JOHN KRIGBAUM ........ m. 15 Feb 1861 -- MARY DICKEY.
Now, JOHN KRIGBAUM has a son
JAMES F. KRIGBAUM born -- 29 April 1854. Who is the mother?
It looks like JANE M. WHITE.
JOHN KRIGBAUM is divorced from LUCY STUMP in 1860.
(I have the divorce papers and they state no issue by this marriage.)
In the census records shows the following.....

** Who is JANE KRIGBAUM, age: 50?
Now as you can see, there is a lot of confusion. Any help here would be appreciated.
The following taken from the Ralls County Record in May of 1878: We learn from the Record that Mr. JOHN KRIGBAUM, SR. an old and respected resident of Ralls County died at the residence of his son near Ketesville, MO on the 3rd inst. at the advanced age of 84 years, 1 month and 12 days. He was a native of Maryland and served in the ranks during the War of 1812. (I have the papers on the War of 1812 Service.)

# 2. MARY (Polly) KRIGBAUM b. 1794 Maryland. She married -- 8 Oct 1839 in Ralls County, MO to ARCHIBALD ORGAN. (ARCHIBALD ORGAN was a brother to SARAH ORGAN, JOHN's wife).
MARY (Polly) KRIGBAUM and ARCHILBALD ORGAN had the following children:
SARAH PERLINA ORGAN
ANDREW ORGAN
JAMES PRESLEY ORGAN
JOHN ORGAN and KATHRYN ORGAN.
MARY (Polly) KRIGBAUM ORGAN died 26 July 1878 near Madisonville, Ralls Co., MO.
The following item taken from "Abstracts from 'OLD SETTLERS Biographies, printed in the Ralls County Times (1900-1901 NO. 32 18 Oct 1901.)
ANDREW JACKSON ORGAN born in Old Alford Hotel in New London, MO.
Parents from Bourbon County, KY and came to Missouri in 1824. In the party were grandfather KRIGBAUM...... (NOTE: JACOB KRIGBAUM, whose daughter POLLY married ARCHIBALD ORGAN and his son JOHN who married SARAH ORGAN), two sons PRESLEY and ANDREW, two sisters MARY and KITTY. WILLIAM, grandfather of ANDREW J. ORGAN was Revolutionary War Soldier. ARCHIBALD ORGAN had a ferry across Salt River, east of New London. The bridge over Salt River has long been called ORGAN FERRY BRIDGE.
Continue with the children of JACOB KRIGBAUM and MARIA (Rice) REIS:
# 3. KATHERINE KRIGBAUM b. 1797 in Kentucky married -- 4 Sept 1823 -- DAVID RICE in Jessamine County, KY. KATHERINE KRIGBAUM RICE'S mother, MARIA or (MARY) RIES later changed to RICE was DAVID RICE's aunt, so KATHERINE KRIGBAUM and DAVID RICE were 1st cousins. ANDREW RICE, son of CASPER RICE, brother to Maria RIES Krigbaum, married -- 5 May 1785 in Frederick County, MD to MARY NEED b. Sept 1769. They lived in Lexington, KY; Madisonville, MO and Garrard Co., KY where ANDREW RICE died. Their son, DAVID RICE, married KATHERINE KRIGBAUM. KATHERINE KRIGBAUM RICE died 18 July 1880, Browns Valley, CA. As you can see, the family of RICE & KRIGBAUM are very closely related. It seems this family of REIS OR RICE as we know it now lived in a settlement of Germans in FREDERICK CO., MD, and a great many of these German families emigrated to Kentucky and most of them settled in Jessamine County, KY and some went on to Ralls County, MO. These are some of the family names: RICE, NEED, CASSELL, KRIGBAUM, HARBOUGH, BALTZELL, FUNK, RHORER, SMITH, VANTRESS, GOFARTH, SAGERS, ARNSPIGARS.
It seems as though KATHERINE KRIGBAUM RICE and her husband DAVID RICE went to California during the Gold Rush.
Children of DAVID RICE and KATHERINE KRIGBAUM:
ABSOLEM RICE
LEWIS RICE
WILLIAM S. RICE
MARY RICE

TRACY moved to St. Joseph, MO in March of 1847. We found her will in the Ralls County, MO Courthouse in with the will of her father JACOB KRIGBAUM. The will was dated 17 Aug 1858. They are in the 1850 Buchanan County, MO Census.

# 6. JACOB R. KRIGBAUM was b. 1800 in Kentucky.
He married MARIA BRANDON -- 6 Aug 1826 in Ralls County, MO.
It has been told to us that JACOB's middle initial R. stood for RILEY but I have the opinion that it was RICE. This is just speculation. This is where our secretary, DOROTHY STEELE, descends along with Mrs. LENA HICKLIN and many others. JACOB R. KRIGBAUM dies around 1866.
Children of JACOB R. KRIGBAUM and MARIA BRANDON:
MARGARET K. KRIGBAUM
JACOB R. KRIGBAUM, Jr.
HENRY KRIGBAUM
WILLIAM B. KRIGBAUM
ANDREW P. KRIGBAUM
ELIZA KRIGBAUM
LORENZO KRIGBAUM
MARTHA E. KRIGBAUM and
ALBERT KRIGBAUM.
Three of his sons married three sisters. They were
JACOB R. KRIGBAUM, Jr. married MARY JANE (Polly) GOODNIGHT;
ANDREW P. KRIGBAUM married SARAH B. GOODNIGHT and
ALBERT KRIGBAUM married POLINA GOODNIGHT.
As you can see the JACOB's can be confusing. The JACOB that Mrs. HICKLIN was referring to as "the old JACOB" was the one who married MARIA BRANDON when it was really JACOB who married MARIA REIS.
So it goes like this:
JACOB and MARIA RICE KRIGBAUM had a son
named JACOB R. KRIGBAUM SR. who married MARIA BRANDON.
They had a son Jacob R. KRIGBAUM, JR. who married MARY JANE GOODNIGHT and they had a son named JACOB JOSIAH KRIGBAUM who married ROSA WOOTEN. Are you confused yet?
The story below is printed as it was told to DOROTHY STEELE by her grandmother MINERVA KRIGBAUM RICHARDS which MINERVA had heard from her grandfather JACOB R. KRIGBAUM (the one who married MARIA BRANDON).
"There were three men who came to Missouri to check for a place to move their families. The identity of two of the men was not given but one member of the party was JACOB R. KRIGBAUM. The three men met an Indian squaw around noon. She had a baby strapped on her back. She was fishing from the bank of a stream. When one of the unidentified men saw her, he said, "the only good Indian is a dead Indian" and pulled his gun and shot her. She fell into the river with the baby and both drowned. As the river was swift at that spot, she soon floated from sight. That night when the men were bedded for the night, JACOB R. KRIGBAUM asked the man why he felt this way about the Indians. The man replied that the Indians had killed his family and that he had since killed every Indian he saw.
The men had just gone to sleep and all of a sudden, Indians came from everywhere. They surrounded the three men and grabbed them and tied them to trees. The Indians told the men that if they would tell them which one of them killed the Indian woman, he would be the only one punished. MINERVA KRIGBAUM stated, "the man must have been very brave because he admitted he was the one who killed the woman." The Indians, then took the man, stripped him of all his clothes, tied him to a stake and also tied JACOB R. KRIGBAUM and the other man to a tree a few yards away. The Indians rode in a circle around the man tied to the stake. With their spears, they took a piece of his skin at a time until he had none left. The last thing they did was put out his eyes. When this was finished they released the other two men and told them to be on their way and that if they ever killed another Indian, they would be treated the same way.
MINERVA KRIGBAUM RICHARDS said her grandfather JACOB R. KRIGBAUM had nightmares for many years later because he could still hear the man screaming.

In the combined 2nd & 3rd Issue of "The KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE" 1977, we printed a picture of JACOB R. KRIGBAUM who was married to MARY JANE GOODNIGHT. We are reprinting the picture in this issue (below) that you may see the very distinct resemblance.
[picture]
Left to right:
GEORGE JACOB RICHARDS (son of MINERVA KRIGBAUM);
GEORGE KRIGBAUM (son of JACOB R. KRIGBAUM);
JACOB R. KRIGBAUM JR. and WILLIAM HARRISON KRIGBAUM (father of Mrs. LENA HICKLIN and lived to 105 years of age) On the far right is WILLIAM KRIGBAUM.
In the combined Issue 1977 is a picture of HENRY (Uncle Hank) KRIGBAUM, son of JACOB VALENTINE KRIGBAUM (Pictured next page) and shows a resemblance to these brothers JACOB R. and ALBERT. HENRY descends through JACOB and MARIA (REIS) KRIGBAUM.
If you take a look at the July 1980 issue of The Kriegbaum Heritage, you will see a picture of WILLIAM THOMAS KRIGBAUM, son of CONRAD KRIGBAUM born in Fulton County, IL. CONRAD was the son of PETER KRIGBAUM of Allegany County, MD. PETER and JACOB of Ralls County, MO were brothers. The resemblance of all these people is almost unbelievable and to think they all go back to CONRAD CRICKBAUM of Allegany County, MD.
Continue with the children of JACOB KRIGBAUM and MARIA (Rice) REIS:
# 7. FRANCES KRIGBAUM b. 1806 in Kentucky. She was married to JACOB ASHURST. The Ashurst family went to California about 1850. Both FRANCES and JACOB ASHURST, so it is told, died before they arrived in California but the family became prominent ranchers. The parents of JACOB ASHURST were Robert and Jane Craig. Jane Craig's father was Joseph Craig, one of the three Craig brothers (Baptist Ministers) that led the traveling church into Kentucky in its early days.
The children of FRANCES KRIGBAUM and JACOB ASHURST were:
ROBERT, CRAIG, MARY ANN, ELIZA, AMERICA, WILLIAM, ANDREW, EMALINE, JOHN and GEORGE CAMBELL ASHURST.

Well, there you have the children of JACOB and MARIA REIS KRIGBAUM. We have so much more we could tell you about these families but I have already gone past the limit. Hope you can make sense of this. If you have any additions or corrections, please let me hear from you. By the way, about 75% of our membership comes from CONRAD CRICKBAUM of Allegany County, MD.
FLASH..........PETER KRIGBAUM of Allegany County, MD. We have found where he is buried. He is buried at the SS Peters & Pauls German CATHOLIC Cemetery. PETER KRIGBAUM died -- 15 May 1857 -- Age 86. All of the descendants of PETER will probably have Catholic connections. A big part of this family moved to Muskingum County, OH. I plan to do this family in the October 1983 issue. We will also have a discussion on some of the descendants of each of the immigrants and the members we have not connected to the four immigrants.

EXCERPTS FROM RALLS COUNTY HISTORY
PAGE 72 - According to reminiscences of Nimrod Waters, the KRIGBAUM MILL, west of town ran only when the creek was high enough to turn the mill, eventually the stones ended up in the flower beds of the George R. Tompkins home.
KRIGBAUM'S were in the broom making business in Ralls Co., MO.
BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST:
6 miles west of New London. Brother GEORGE KRIGBAUM was cited so often they should have kept his name on the roll in pencil to erase at one meeting and write back on at the next. He had an unbecoming weakness for dances and card games. When he was able to resist, and missed such an event, he might be profane if questioned about his absence. Eventually he was cited at every meeting but the case was always postponed without an unanimous decision to exclude him. He was always contrite so they learned to accept him as the congregation's weak vessel.
Also in this congregation were a PETER KRIGBAUM and a black DANIEL KRIGBAUM.
These were evidently slaves of JACOB.
GEORGE W. KRIGBAUM arrested for giving information to the enemy
-- Civil War.
LEWIS TRACY - built the 2nd jail in 1841 for $1100.00 on N.E. corner of new courthouse square.
