MESSAGE FROM CAROL:

A year has passed since the 1981 reunion at Center, MO and we have just finished the 1982 reunion with lots of food, fun, sharing of memories, meeting both old and new friends. As president, I feel this has been a growing year in our genealogical endeavor. In the RESEARCH area, we hare gained much new family data, copies of research done by our members, names of new people to contact, old photos, etc. KAY JAMES has been keeping huge charts on the 4 immigrants and their children. Each year she adds all new information from our members and any research we have done in a different color.

This year, the color is green and we have had an awfully lot of green show up. We are grateful to ALL our members who share their research with us. This is the essence and spirit of our immigrant ancestors. On the way home from the Center reunion, KAY made the remark that "I'll bet old CONRAD the immigrant is looking down and saying that's all my kids meeting down there today!" Nice thought.

TO RECEIVE YOUR FAMILY SHEETS IS IMPORTANT TO US.

On MEMBERSHIP: Since the 1981 reunion, we have had 39 new members and 51 renewals up to Saturday, September 4, when we added 9 new members that evening plus 3 on Sunday. Our total membership is now 129.

NEWSLETTER: We feel that our newsletters featuring the covers as an added attraction and the great genealogy reports KAY has been doing on the immigrants has been an important part of our efforts this past year. Our first cover of the KRICKBAUM covered bridge was sent to us by EARL TRASTER and the John Graham Plantation and the covered wagon cover was done by EMERY CREEKBAUM of Marco Island, FL. EMERY is very gifted with the pen and pencil and we plan to use more of his talent in the future as he has generously volunteered himself. If anyone has any thing that would be of interest as a cover, please send it and we will see if we can use it. EMERY also sent a carving on a sea shell for our eldest male descendent and also one for me with CAROL and one for KAY. We are all very proud of them.

OHIO MINI-REUNION: HAZEL MILLER, our Vice President and coordinator of the Ohio reunion along with EARL TRASTER and MARTHA MERTZ hosted the day with a tour of The North Canton Ohio Heritage Society, originally the home of FRED KREIGHBAUM, then toured the cemetery where JOHN WILLIAM KREIGHBAUM born l754 and wife CATHERINE GARMAN / GERMAN are buried. JOHN WILLIAM is the revolutionary soldier.

After the dinner at the Sheraton Inn, the speaker, Kathy Modich spoke on the JOHN KRICHBAUM Barns. Kathy is a Malone College graduate who did a paper on the barns as a research project. RICHARD C. BIXLER, a photographer, son of ROSA KREIGHBAUM BIXLER, took pictures. Details of the 1983 reunion appear elsewhere in newsletter.

CENTER REUNION: Sunday. September 5, a number of descendants gathered at Center MC. The blessing for the noon meal was sung by Brenda House, Oklahoma City, OK. The meeting was called to order. Minutes read and approved. Treasurer's report accepted. Reports were given by STAN & JOANNE LITTLE on Salt Lake City trip, WILLIAM and MARY WILSON on their trip to Salt Lake City, and CAROL read part of

WOULD YOU BELIEVE A CASTLE IN OUR PAST?

Thursday, May 13, 1982

We disembarked our ship on the Rhine River at Gernsheim, Germany at 4:00 P.M. We were to travel by bus to Heidelburg and reboard our ship at 10:30 the same night at Speyer, Germany.

We passed beautiful farm land in the Neckar Valley where the Valley widens out and the Neckar River empties into the Rhine. The asparagus fields were being harvested, the largest asparagus tips I've ever seen. We had an excellent Guide; a lady well educated in German History. She spoke of the talented people of the valley who built a Castle at Heidelberg which we were to see; she said it will amaze you! Also, that Heidelberg University was founded 1386 A. D. Still, today, it has the finest Medical School in all of Germany. As our bus entered the vicinity of Heidelberg, I saw a road sign that really shook me up giving Kilometer distance to Eberbach -- 40 Kilometers and Rothenburg, a little further. I recalled in our ancestor's immigration papers that our people came from Eberbach and Wurttenberg Co. I spoke to the Guide and she told me, since World War II the County was known as Baden-Wurttenberg, and that Eberbach was only 31 Kilometers up the valley, east of Heidelberg (about 20 miles).

I can assure you she had my undivided attention. In the center of town we picked up a small, narrow road called Schloss which we followed to the castle overlooking Heidelberg. We came upon the largest castle that I believe one could ever hope to find. It took over 300 years to build. It was built of red sandstone, and the cornices and statues were in a white stone resembling limestone, but I am sure it was a better stone than say limestone, as the rises and the features on the statues were in excellent condition.

In olden times, Germany was divided into 7 Provinces which in turn was divided into Counties or States. For over 300 years the system of Prince Electorate existed whereby each Province was governed by a Prince Electorate. The Prince Electorate were as a group the elector of the Emperor or King. As one Prince Electorate died, a new one was appointed by the Emperor; if the son was suitable, it went to the deceased Electorates's son. Each new electorate would want to add to the castle his own Palace. So, over three hundred years, the castle got quite large. In neither World War was the castle disturbed. However, during the 30 year War 1610-1640, the castle suffered considerable damage; quite a bit of which has been restored. The Upper Castle was hit by lightning twice in the same day in 1534. Work on the Castle started in 1214 and was improved and added to for over 300 years. Rooms in the Castle were heated with Porcelain stoves; the opening was a fireplace in another room. Words cannot describe the fine architecture and stone work in the Heidelberg Castle. One of the Prince Electorates, as a birthday present for his young 19-year old English bride, (Elizabeth Stuart) had workman build a new entrance gate to their palace; it was all laid and completed during one night. "Beautiful, ornamental work", the guide commented; "when we had it repaired, it took us 3 months." The wine cellar had a vat that held over 55,000 gallons of wine. A dance floor for 4 couples on top of it. The vat has only been filled twice completely. We had our group picture taken in front of the upper castle; when we came to the town side of the lower castle, the pictures were ready. The guide pointed to a heel impression 2-inches deep in a courtyard stone. She said the story is—A spurned lover in a full suit of armor jumped out the top floor. -- Everyone groaned.-- She said, "Well, would you believe this?" – A workman, during lunch periods, out this out and said a thousand years from now one of my descendants will visit this castle; he'll put his foot here and it will fit. All the men rushed forward to try it; only one fitted. Guess who's?

Anyone interested in acquiring a history of this magnificent castle, write Kunstverlag Edm. Von Koenig "A guide to the town and Castle" Postfach 1027, 6909 Dielheim, West Germany I enclosed 41.00 and self addressed Envelope and asked for prices.

' WOULD YOU BELIEVE A CASTLE IN OUR PAST? '.

There is also a book on Rothenberg O.T. Write for particulars and prices. Should be around $5.00 each, The Rothenberg book might contain a Picture of a Krichbaumhof Hostel, not the one at Munich.

Our tour ended too loan and we met our bus and went for an old fashion evening at the Heidelberg Community Building. We hardly got seated at the table when the German girls started pouring the beer. It was not like our beer-- it had a much better taste. The one-man band and his accordion started to play and out of the kitchen door came a chef pushing a cart with 6 or more hams on fire. Two other chefs put the fire out and started carving. The menu was German potato salad, hot ham, ripe tomato salad, and German cheesecake for desert. Then the singing started; many solos, some were really good. There were about 150 guests; our group totaled 35. A few wound up the evening dancing the Polka, including the CREEKBAUMS.

We started our bus trip back to the boat about 9:30 and our guide sang us some fine, old German tunes. When she thought we were ready, she had us join in.

If any of you have the opportunity to see this beautiful Castle, plan for more time than I had. Wouldn't a week be great to visit the orchards and vineyards, and take a boat ride up the Neckar River to Eberbach and Rothenberg? Walk the same ground as our ancestors walked and see the same sights! Their voyage had to be down the Neckar River to the Rhine, down the Rhine to Rotterdam and, thus, to America. The some 50 odd castles between Heidelberg and Rotterdam felt the eyes of my ancestors as well as my own -- no doubt about it.

Another highlight of our trip was a trip by bus through the Black Forest of Germany and the Swiss Alps. We saw many Swiss and German Houses built very similar to the Krichbaunhof that is being restored at Munich, this style is called Zainthel type. There are only a few with the thatched roofs as fire insurance is so high, they used to be quite common until people started smoking cigarettes. They say birds got to picking up lit butts and flying away with them and occasionally dropping them on a thatched roof thus starting fires. Only the very wealthy can afford them these days.

JOHN HAMILTON CREEKPAUM
1829 - 1920
(picture insert)

JOHN HAMILTON CREEKPAUM and his youngest sister JANE FANN. Picture taken probably 1900.

The first record that I have of JOHN HAMILTON CREEKPAUM is the 1850 Cass County, Clinton Township, Indiana census which shows him, at age 20, to be the oldest child of THOMAS (Jefferson?) CREEKPOND. This information appears on page 984 of the census microfilm and on page 4 of the October 1981 issue of The Kriegbaum Heritage. JOHN HAMILTON CREEKPAUM was the great grandson of MICHAEL CREEKPAUM (see the July 1982 issue of the Heritage), and my great grandfather through my mother's line.

Civil war records show that his birth date was 19 Dec. 1829. His birthplace was sometimes listed as Tippecanoe and at other times as Logansport, Indiana.

On 4 March 1853 he married ALMIRA JANE LaRUE (LAREW) in Cass County, Indiana.
Children of JOHN HAMILTON CREEKPAUM & ALMIRA JANE LaRUE were:
1. MARY JANE CREEKPAUM, born: 24 Dec 1853 -- Cass County, IN
2. THOMAS JEFFERSON CREEKPAUM (My GFather), born: 2 Jul 1855 -- Cass County, IN
3. TELITHA EMMA CREEKPAUM, born: 12 Aug 1861 -- Cass County, ? IN
4. GEORGE ALLEN CREEKPAUM, (sic, born: 2 Dec. 1866 -- Richland County, ? Wisc.
5. JULIA A. CREEKPAUM, born: 12 Jul 1867 -- Maries County, MO. (1870?)
6. NANCY B. CREEKPAUM, born: 22 Mar 1876 -- Maries County, MO.
7. * JOHNIE W. CREEKPAUM, born: 11 Dec 1880 -- Cherokee Nation
8. * LIZZIE CREEKPAUM, born: 22 Sep 1882 -- Cherokee Nation

[See *Note on Page 6 for Johnie & Lizzie.]

JOHN HAMILTON CREEKPAUM probably named his oldest son, THOMAS JEFFERSON, after his father and JOHN's younger brother HUGH, also had a son named THOMAS JEFFERSON. The frequent use of the name, "THOMAS," has added greatly to the difficulty in tracing his line.)

He moved to Wisconsin sometime after 1861 and enlisted as a Private on 29 Feb. 1864 in Co. D, 11th Regiment of the Wisconsin Infantry. He gave his post office address at enlistment as Woodstock, Richland Co., Wisconsin. His war records also provide the following information:

Height: 5 ft. 11 inches
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Light
Complexion: Light
Occupation: Farmer; Permanent marks or scars: "yes, a deep scar in the palm of right hand"

Shortly after enlistment he became ill and was taken to the Post Hospital, and transferred to the Unassigned Veterans Reserve Corps (V.R.C.) on 1 April 1865. After he recovered, he became a nurse at the hospital until he was mustered out at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on 19 September 1865. Incidentally, the various civil war documents, when filled out by other people, spell his name many different ways: CREEKPAUM, CREEKPAUN, CREEPAWN, and CREEKPOND. I have copies of several different documents that he signed, however, and he was consistent in using CREEKPAUM.

In 1867 he and his family moved to Johnson Township, Maries County, Missouri. He was enumerated in that county's 1870 census on 15 June with his wife, ALMIRA, and his four oldest children. It is somewhat humorous to note that on that census his then youngest child, JULIA, who was 11 months old was listed as "sucking" under "occupation." JOHN moved to Oklahoma in 1879; however, ALMIRA did not move at that time. She is enumerated on 3 June 1880 in the 1880 census.

14. ___, JULIA, Dau., f, w, 10, S, MO, IND, Tenn
15. ___, NANCY, Dau., f, w, 4, S, MO, IND, Tenn

Shortly after this census was taken, ALMIRA moved to the Cherokee Nation where JOHNIE was born on 11 Dec. 1880 and LIZZIE was born an 22 Sept. 1882. See the note at the end of this article.) ALMIRA died in Gore, Oklahoma, but the date of her death is unknown. JOHN then married NANCY HARTMAN on 21 July 1892. She died in Gore, Oklahoma on 9 November 1899. He then married LIZZIE FRY on 9 July 1900. He moved to Arkansas in 1901--probably directly to Crawford County. He was definitely in Mulberry, Crawford County, by 1903. His third wife, LIZZIE FRY, died on 15 April 1903 in Mulberry, Arkansas. He married his fourth wife, MARTHA TRAVIS, on 9 July 1905.

He and his wife, MARTHA, are enumerated in the 1910 Crawford Co., Maxey Township, Arkansas census. His age is listed incorrectly at 75. He lived in the same township in 1920 where he was enumerated in the census on 30 Jan. 1920. The 1920 census shows him to be a widower and his age, correctly, at 91 years.

My mother, ISABELLA CREEKPAUM, lived close to JOHN HAMILTON (her GFather) from the time of her birth in 1902 till his death in 1920. On several occasions she described him as a tall, fun-loving man with a "lot of mischief in his eyes." This was in contrast to her father, THOMAS JEFFERSON, who was very short and had a quiet, serious manner.

JOHN HAMILTON died on 8 May 1920 in Crawford County, Arkansas. He lived to be about 91 years old and he spent most of his life as a farmer. As he stated in his application for a pension on 22 October 1913, he "was not wounded during my service just wore out from old age."

* NOTE: There is also conflicting evidence that the mother of
JOHNIE and LIZZIE was NANCY HARTMAN
and not ALMIRA LaRUE.

The following information was sent to us from:
L. W. KRICHBAUM
P.O. Box 2183,
Chattanooga TN.

JOHANN JACOB KRICHBAUM was born in 1826, probably in or near Reichenbach Im Odenwald, across the mountains from Hesse-Domstadt. He procured his passport for immigration at Darmstadt at about the same time that three KRICHBAUM brothers sold their farms on the mountain over Reichenbach to the Prince of Erhlach and Hohenstein during hard times in the 1840's. JOHANN's wife was ELIZABETH ECKLES, born 1827 Frankfort. They settled near Green Bay, Wisconsin and their first child, JAMES WESLEY KRICHBAUM, was born on a homestead up the Fox River, some distance above Green Bay in 1862.

KRICHBAUM means "Wild Plum tree" in Austrian dialect, and the family wappen (arms) is a wild Boar with a plum tree growing out its back. In Teutonic heraldry the wild boar ranked behind the Hirsh, and is quite respected place in the "pecking order". It should be borne in mind that geographic locations were a frequent source of original family names. Thus a number of completely unrelated families coming from the same general location might all have the same name.

The KRICHBAUM name first appeared around Steyr, Austria about 1450. Originally it was pronounced "Creeklebown Hof" the word "Hof" being equivalent to "place". Presumably it was an area known for its wild plum thickets. The word Krickel" (spelling questioned) is still used in Austrian dialect for a word plum tree.

This information was gathered by Dr. CARROLL ECKLES KRICHBAUM, Colonel in the U.S. Medical Corp immediately following World War II and is passed on by his son - JAMES WESLEY KRICHBAUM of Terry, MI. As far as could be determined no KRICHBAUMs were ever particularly rich, or poor, or bad. They were mostly landholders, some professional men, and soldiers. A possible exception to the "bad" was a late Nazi Gaulteiter in Frankfort Am Main, who was lost in the Allied bombing of Frankfort.

WILLIE KRICHBAUM was a Major commanding a German Tank battalion in W. W. II, and saw action mostly against the Russians, but also fought against Americans and British troops in Italy. He was interesting and likeable enough. His father, PHILLIP KRICHBAUM, was manager of the Presser-Rhemus grain elevator at Herman, Germany - a fine gentleman who died around 1949. PHILLIP KRICHBAUM and CARROLL became pretty good friends during Dr. KRICHBAUM's tour of duty in Germany and the tracing of the family name and wappen [sic] were done basically thru PHILLIP's efforts.

It is a pretty safe bet that there were plenty of KRICHBAUMs who fought in the American Revolution as Hessians Jaegers - the supposedly infamous mercenaries rented by the British from the King, or whatever, of Hesse. Does this qualify us for the D.A.R.?

** EDITORS NOTE: See page 6 for listing of
JOHANN JACOB & ELizabeth ( ECKLES ) KRICHBAUM's children.
