MESSAGE FROM CAROL

Our newsletter is very full this time so will keep my message short, I hope, but do have a lot to mention. First, I hope you will overlook any errors as shortly after I started typing the newsletter, my typewriter quit. It is in the repair shop and I am using a borrowed one that I am not used to. BEAR WITH ME.

This issue is featuring the immigrant, CONRAD KRIGBAUM. We believe, although it is not proven, that this CONRAD is a younger brother to the other 3 brothers. A large number of our members come through this CONRAD including my husband's family, KAY JAMES, DOROTHY STEELE (our secretary), the MICHAEL CREEKBAUM descendants, the recently discovered PHILIP CREEKBAUM line, and we believe (not proven) JOANNE KRIGBAUM LITTLE and ISABEL MALONE. Of our 107 families membership at present 47 of the families come from this immigrant ancestor CONRAD.

KAY JAMES and I recently spent the weekend with STAN and JOANNE LITTLE in Webster Groves, St. Louis and attended a Genealogical Seminar. We had a great time. Not much sleep but lots of books and family tree fun.

We do hope that each of you will make plans now to attend a reunion. We would appreciate having the slip filled out on Page 11 and mailed back to us. KEEP THE MAIL COMING... We need lots more FAMILY SHEETS. We have been filling in a lot of families with tile sheets that have been sent to us.

THANK YOU, BILL and MARY WILSON for reading census records for us. This was really a help.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ISABEL MALONE - June 19th

One of our members EMERY CREEKBAUM after a very broad hint from CAROL came through with a Covered Wagon drawing for our cover. We chose a wagon train since most of CONRAD's family traveled west earlier than the other families.

Thank you, EMERY, for the super drawing and also for accepting my hint.

HOME FROM EUROPE

EMERY and LONNIE CREEKAUM, Marco Island, FL have returned from a trip through Holland, Germany, Switzerland and France. They were on a Rhine cruise ship from Nijmegen, Netherlands, on the North Sea. Emery sent us quite a bit of data about their trip and we hope to have an article in the October newsletter about it. They were in the area of the Krichbaum, Kriegbaum, etc. families so we find the letters very interesting. We also have a beautiful drawing of a castle he sent to us. Plan to read about his trip next issue.

We also plan to publish some of the data we have on the other family of Kriegbaums we haven't linked up with yet. They came at a later date but we still feel they will be a part of ours. We also plan to have a story and a recipe handed down from generation to generation by one of our members.

DEDICATED????

In response to information received from a new member, Mrs. RALPH DANNER of Astoria IL, we located the grave of CONRAD KRIGBAUM, grandson of the immigrant CONRAD, and great grandfather to ISABEL MALONE, MARGARET McGINNIS and THOMAS McGINNIS and also to Mrs. DANNER. CONRAD died in 1851 and after a lot of fruitless searches, KAY and I were very excited. We immediately set out for Astoria, and being unable to reach Mrs. DANNER, we set out on our own. We proceeded to a friendly little restaurant and found a number of friendly people who got us a plat map and helped us mark cemeteries on it. Everybody got into the search with zest.

We finally located the right farm and found we would need to walk across a corn field and then over a bean field to reach the cemetery. Well, I, being an old farm gal was game for this but KAY, being a city gal and with multiple allergy problems, (Takes a shot every week) started across the field, me going ahead and KAY lagging behind. Discovering the cemetery (in brush, weeds, poison ivy, and heaven knows what else) even I, an old farm gal hesitated. Raving nothing to fight off whatever lurked there except chalk and a notebook, I decided that since I was that close I would go in. I advised KAY (somewhat begrudgingly) to stay out but the instant I yelled out that I had found a KRIGBAUM, in she came. We found CONRAD who died 18 Sep 1851 and his wife PRISCILLA BLAIR KRIGBAUM who died 20 Feb 1853. We came home and called ISABEL with the news.

Excited with this success, we decided to locate our JACOB KRIGBAUM who died in 1835 in Ralls Co. MO. Poring over past and present plat maps, we determined the exact farm JACOB lived on in 1830 or thereabouts, and lo we found that KAY's cousin on her maternal side, Richard Fry, lives there now. After a call to Richard, KAY and I armed ourselves with scythes, knives, boots, etc., and proceeded to Ralls County. Richard and his wife Genevieve took us in their truck to the location of the cemetery, overgrown, marshy and most stones overturned and buried. NO luck, but not giving up. We have another just a mile or so from that one but we will wait until late fall, unless our curiosity gets the best of us.

IS THAT DEDICATION OR IS THAT INSANITY?

KAY'S MESSAGE

Time does fly. It seems as though I just finished a report on JOHANNES ADAM. CAROL informed me that it is time for another report, this time on CONRAD K-BAUM of Frederick and Allegany counties, Md. I thought, Boy, this one will be easy. Fooled again. I have so much on this one and his descendants that I don't know where to start.

By the way, this is where CAROL and I and ISABEL MALONE descend along with 46 of our other members. The largest part of our membership is from this line.

When did CONRAD arrive in America? We are not sure.

On September 22, 1752, - Ship Brothers, William M'Nair, Captain from Rotterdam last from Cowes arrives...JOH CONRAD KRIECHBAUM. Is this our CONRAD?

We have received many different reports that this man is the father of the 3 brothers, HANS PHILIP, JOH ADAM and JOH WILHELM KRICHBAUM who arrived in America 2 September 1949. We believe that there is a definite connection between these 4 men. Either they were all brothers or 3 brothers and father. One other possibility is this: Only all male persons above the age 16 years did repeat and sign their names or make their mark on the Allegiance to the Province of Pennsylvania. Was this CONRAD under 16 when he arrived in America or is he the one who arrived in 1752? So far we can't prove when he arrived or the exact connection to the other 3 brothers.

I have very few references of CONRAD being in the early Pennsylvania records (1770 or before). Here is what I do have.

Egles Notes and Queries, PA. Archives; Series 3 VOL. I, Page 524...
CONRAD KRIEGBAUM on list of communicants 4 April 1762 at Little Tulpehocken Church who received Holy Supper at Berks Co. Pa. This CONRAD KRIEGBAUM is the same area of JOHANNES WILHELM KRIEGBAUM and JOHANNES ADAM KRIEGBAUM.

PA. Archives, VOL. I - Series 3, Page 181- 182...Tuesday 26 May 1767, there was some kind of a dispute reselling rights mentioning part of 70 acres sold to CONRAD KREICHBAUM.

PA Archives, VOL. XVIII - Series 3, ...
Cumru Township tax lists - Berks County Pa....
CONRAD KRICHBAUM - 50 acres -- 1767.
CONRAD KREIGBAUM - 5O acres -- 1768.

I no longer can find this CONRAD in the Pennsylvania records but find a CONRAD CREEPAUM (CRICKPAUM) patent at Baltimore Maryland. Certificate - 54½ acres BC and, ~ 5 # 51 folio 69 Patent 54½ acres BC & ~ 5 # 48 folio 312. The land referred to as "HEIDLEBURG." It begins at a tract called "Three Brothers Neighborhood." This dated 17 February 1775.

Another deed in Frederick County MD: At the request of CONRAD KREIGHBAUM - this deed recorded 3 May 1775 between MICHAEL DOTHROW, JR. of Frederick County, MD, and CONRAD. This is for land called PEACE, being a ROSEWAY on a tract of land called SWINBURG and a part of a tract called NEW GERMANY lying and being in Frederick County, MD. This was 124 acres of land more or less.

Another deed in Frederick County, MD. WR 13 - 212 - At the request of JACOB GOLLER...recorded 16 April 1795. . indenture 4 April 1795 ... between CONRAD CRICKBAUM. 825 pounds - 125 acres, 2 tracts called (1) "PEACE" and (2) "BETTER THAN NONE." 74 acres neighbors tracts "RESURVEY ON STONY HILL" - PETER BALSAL... Otis Chane "ADAM OX... "CONTRACT" PETER BALSCH. Wife Mary CRICKPAUM released right of dower.

Is this our CONRAD? This census is either difficult to read or did the census taker mark the wrong place?

Allegany County MD Deed Book B - Page 484 recorded: 6 March 1798, William SHAW (Minister) requested that a record be made that the household of CONRAD CREIGHBAM and THOMAS BARCUS be stipulated as a house of worship of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The following taken from Early Records of Allegany County MD 1787-1825 by Cupler/Hinkle Page 70 - Abstract of Will:

In the 1810 Allegany County MD Census, CONRAD is not shown under his name but I found him, maybe:

Is one of the males 45 and over our CONRAD? Evidently, CONRAD's wife [ANNA MARIE] is deceased by now.

In Zanesville, Muskigum County, Ohio, in the land grant records... one CONRAD KRIGBAUM, JR. purchased land in 1816. This CONRAD KRIGBAUM listed his residence as Allegany Co. MD. I believe this CONRAD is the same CONRAD in the Frederick and Allegany Counties, MD.. If so, his father is CONRAD KRIGBAUM, SR. and CONRAD KRIGBAUM / KRICHBAUM has three brothers, JOHANNES ADAM, JOHANNES PHILIP and JOHANNES WILHELM.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?????

Note by Nancy Pechè: Johannes ADAM & Johannes WILHELM KRIEGBAUM did not have a brother named CONRAD KRIEGBAUM. Johannes ADAM and Johannes WILHELM's parents were Johann Wilhelm KRIEGBAUM and Anna Catharine PFEIFFER. WILHELM's and ADAM's births along with CONRAD KRICHBAUM's births were documented in the last issue of the Kriegbaum Heritage.

KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE, Volume XIV, April & July 1989, No. 2 & 3, page 3.
This information was researched in Germany and came from Cornelia Schrader Muggenthaler 10 Feb. 1989.

This is definitely not old CONRAD. I believe this one is a Son of the PETER CREAKBAUM above and a grandson to old CONRAD.

November 22, 1826 Allegany County MD. The third and final account of PETER KRIGBAUM, executor of CONRAD KRIGBAUM estate. The same people are listed here as was in his will in 1805.

I have discovered two other children that were not mentioned in the will. They are a son: JOHAN GEORGE, born: 22 April 1776, baptized: 26 May 1776.
Parents: CONRAD and ANNA MARIA KRICHBAUM;
Sponsors: GEORCE TOTTERER (DUTROW) and wife CATHARINA.
This record located at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick County, MD.

At the German Reformed Church in Frederick County, MD. a child:
SUSANNA BEDER was born: 14 June 1784 to CHRISTIN BEDER and his wife
MARIA. SUSANNA was baptized 11 July 1784. The witnesses were the
grandparents, CONRAD and ANNA MARIA KRIEGBAUM.

Why weren't these two children mentioned in the will? I believe JOHANN GEORGE KRICHBAUM died. But, I do not understand about MARIA BEDER. The reason being as he named his grandchildren, the NEFFS in his will but no mention of the BEDER name. WHY NOT? In Frederick County, VA I found a marriage record for CHRITIAN BAKER and MARY CRICKBAUM dated as 25 August 1783.

(1.) At the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick County, MD. a child:
MARY ELIZABETH [dau. of CONRAD & ANNA MARIA KRICHBAUM]
born: 13th November 1764. In the same church, DAVID LORENTZ SPEELMAN and ELIZABETH KRICHBAUM were married -- 26 October 1784.
One of the witnesses was CONRAD KRICHBAUM.

In the German Reformed Church in Frederick County, MD. I have found two births to LORENTZ and ELIZABETH SPEILMAN.
A son - JOHN JACOB born: 13 January 1786, baptized: 4 June 1786.
WItnesses: CONRAD and ANNA MARIA KRIEGHBAUM.
A son - PETER SPIELMAN born: 6 July 1791, baptized: 30 September 1791. Witnesses: PETER KRIEGHBAUM, (Single)
Now I lose track of the SPIELMAN family, but then I find them again with the family of PHILIP CREIGBAUM.

[2.] There is a son PHILIP [son of CONRAD & ANNA MARIA] listed in CONRAD'S will of 1805. I have not found a birth record on him. Now we really have to be careful because JOHANNES ADAM who was written about in our April 1982 issue, page 9 also had a son PHILIP living in the area. But ADAM'S son PHILIP is a little bit older. He is the PHILIP who married CATHERINE JOLLY. This PHILIP is in the 1790 Fayette County, PA. census records. In 1800 he is listed in the 1800 Faith County PA. census under the name of PHILIP CROUTBAUM. So the PHILIP in the 1800 Allegany County, MD. in George's Creek is CONRAD's PHILIP.

In the Allegany County, MD. Deed Book C - Page 490, dated 24 May 1802 ....
PHILIP CRICKBAUM ... Page 113 goods & Chattels?
recorded 25 October 1799 PHILIP CRICKBAUM to WILLIAM CROW and WILLIAM LANAY?

After this, PHILIP shows up in 1810 in Green County PA., Richhill Township, census records as PHILIP CICKBAUM. He is in the 1820 and 1830 Green County, PA. census records. In 1840 and 1850 census, we find him in Marshall County, VA.

The 1850 Marshall County, VA. census reads like this:

The census shows his birth in Virginia. Remember there was a dispute on the boundaries of Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. This really causes a lot of problems in finding these people. HELP ANYONE......

We need a will or something to identify his children and his wife's name. The way I have it figured, he had thirteen children...8 females and 5 males. I have identified 5 of the children.

Now, gang, one of our biggest discoveries this year was a new member DIANA MILNE of Salem, Oregon who joined us. She sent me copies of the LOVINA CREIGHBAUM BRYANT family bible and the NELSON SPEELMAN daybook.

In our January 1981 issue, page 3, we printed an article called Wagon Train Trip From Keokuk, Iowa to Oregon. The party consisted of the Speelmans, Creighbaums, and others.

Here is a record I need to get. Green County, PA. Deed Records..
PHILIP CREAKBAUM from STEPHEN DURBIN -- 8 October 1798 --
l - 309...$40.00....Lots 17 & 18 Waynesburg.

There was a Jacob C. CRICKBAUM in the 1850 Green County PA., Richhill Township, census records. He was married to one NANCY DURBIN.

JACOB C. CRICKBAUM and NANCY DURBIN had the following children:
[1.] ELIZABETH -- born: 21 November 1826 in PA., -- married: 7 February 1846
NELSON SPIELMAN.
Could this NELSON SPIELMAN be the grandson of Lawrence and Elizabeth SPIELMAN of Frederick County, Maryland?

There sure is a definite connection between the CREIGHBAUMS AND SPEILMANS.

Diana, hope this helps a little. We need more work done here. ANYONE, help us fill in the gaps.

Another child born to JACOB C. CRICKBAUM and NANCY DURBIN was
[b.] LOVINA who married ZEPHANIA BRYANT.
She is the one who wrote the diary on the wagon train trip.

The other children were:
[3.] SARAH CRICKBAUM
[4.] JOSIAH CRICKBAUM married JANE REBECCA ROBINSON,
[5.] HANNAH CRICKBAUM married ANDREW WORLEY,
[6.] LUCINDA CRICKBAUM
[7.] MARY ANN CRICKBAUM
[8.] ISABEL JUNE CRICKBAUM married JAMES CRATON,
[9.] MINERVA ANN CRICKBAUM married SOL MILLER,
[10.] CASSIE CRICKBAUM married HENRY CLAY
[11.] WARD CRICKBAUM
[12.] JAMES CRICKBAUM and
[13.] JACOB CRICKBAUM

We have much more to print on this family but will have to print it at a later date due to lack of space. Thank you DIANA MILNE.

born: 26 February 1781; baptized: 11 April 1784,
Sponsors: ELIZABETH and CONRAD KRICHBAUM.

This family moved to Duncan Falls Township, Muskigum County, OHIO.
(Note: this is the same county CONRAD KRICHBAUM, Jr. land in 1816).
Then name TOTTERER is shown as DUTROW in the Ohio records. GEORGE DUTROW died: in 1827 in Blue Rock Township, Muskigum County, OH. His wife CATHARINA KRICHBAUM DUTROW died: 1827 - 1830.

This taken from the will of GEORGE DUTROW:
"To JAMES SERIGHT and RUTH SERIGHT, his wife I give and bequeath a half quarter section of land laying on what is called Duncan Run and being half of the said quarter that I purchased of PETER CRIGBAUM ..... This is the PETER CRIGBAUM in Allegany County, MD, who is a brother to CATHERINE DUTROW, GEORGE DUTROW's wife. The other children named in the will of GEORGE DUTROW: SUSANNA CATHERINE wife of DAVID BEAN, WILLIAM DUTROW, GEORGE DUTROW, and ELIZABETH wife of SAMUEL MUSSY. I have no further information on this family at this time.

[4.] MARY MOLLY KRICHBAUM [dau. of CONRAD & ANNA MARIA] - no birth date.
She married DAVID DUTROW
-- 26 March 1797 in Allegany County, MD. We have another new member with information on this line. She is JOAN HANSEN of Hinsdale, ILLINOIS. Thank you Joan.

I have a copy of the will of DAVID DUTROW dated: 3 July 1832. A death date sent to us by JOAN HANSEN on MOLLY DUTROW is 29 August 1829. They are buried at Duncan Falls, Muskigum County, OH.
Children of MARY MOLLY KRICHBAUM and DAVID DUTROW:
JAMES DANIEL, JOHN, SARAH wife of MORDICAI BISHOP,
LUCY wife of HENRY SNIDER and SAMUEL.
DAVID DUTROW owned a farm in Harrison Township, Muskigum Co., OH, Section 17, Range 12 in 1810. DAVID DUTROW was a wheel wagon maker by trade. There is much more information sent to us by JOAN HANSEN, but due to lack of space in this issue, it will be printed at a later date. As you can see, two of CONRAD's daughters married DUTROW's. Were GEORGE and DAVID brothers?

[5.] MARY SUSANNA KRICHBAUM [dau. of CONRAD & ANNA MARIA]
born: 3 September ????, Frederick Co., MD. She married CONRAD NEFF -- 20 February 1798 in Allegany Co., MD, by Rev. William Shaw, a deacon of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The only information from the will of CONRAD in which he names his grandchildren DAVID, HENRY, and HANNAH. SUSANNA and CONRAD NEFF were married in 1798 and are not mentioned in CONRAD KRICHBAUM's will of 1805. WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM? ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED…

[6.] PETER KRIGBAUM [son of CONRAD & ANNA MARIA]
born: 21 March 1772, Frederick Co., MD. One PETER CRICHBAUM married MARY McBRIDE -- 25 November 1797 in Allegany Co., MD.

PETER KRIGBAUM is in all of the Allegany County, MD, census records 1800 - 1850. He dies 15 May 1857 in Allegany County, MD. But to this date, I have been unable to identify the children of PETER KRIGBAUM and MARY McBRIDE as positive proof. According to the census records they would have had nine [9] children, 5 males and 4 females. I believe that HENRY KRIGBAUM, who died in Muskigum County, OH IN 1885, is a son. Also CONRAD KRIGBAUM who died in Fulton County, ILLINOIS is one and WILLIAM KRIGBAUM who died in 1872 in Muskigum County, OH is another son. There is also a JOHN P. KRIGBAUM in Mineral County, W. VA in the 1880 census. I believe that he is also a son of PETER. Any help appreciated. Also, one fact that I should mention is that this one branch of the family seems to be Catholic. We need to check Catholic Church records in Allegany County, MD.

[7.] MICHAEL CREEKPAUM [son of CONRAD & ANNA MARIA] was born in Frederick Co., MD. A son born to CONRAD CREEKPAUM and ANNA MARIA --
8 November 1778, baptized: 11 April 1779, Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Sponsors: Michael Horn and Wife Magdalena.

MICHAEL CREEKPAUM seems to travel with his brother JACOB KRIGBAUM to Jessamine Co., KY. I did not find him on the 1800 KY tax list but his brother JACOB KRICKBAUM was there. MICHAEL and POLLY CARROLL issued a marriage license in Jessamine Co., KY -- 27 July 1801. In 1810 MICHAEL shows up in Greenup County, KY under the name of CREEKPON. In 1820 Greenup County, KY, the name is MICHAEL CREEKGAUN. After 1830 he moves to Parke County, IN. POLLY CARROLL KRIGBAUM, MICHAEL's first wife, died sometime between 1816 and 1820 census. MICHAEL married ELIZABETH DAVIS, a widow, in 1822 in Greenup County, KY. In 1840 MICHAEL is in Warren County, IN. MICHAEL died before 7 January 1850. We have many members from MICHAEL. The two new ones are BETTY MAZE HINTON of Pasadena, TX and JAMES L. GOOD, Jr. San Carlos, CA. They have sent us much material which will be printed in a later issue due to lack of space.

Kay's message Con't .......

MICHAEL CREEKBAUM has been especially difficult because he has had the biggest change of the spelling of the name. For example, on the marriage license, it states MICHAEL CREEKBAUM in one place and KRICKBAUM in another place. When he dies, his estate papers are under the name CREEKPAUM. Some of his descendants are using CREEKBAUM and others CREEKPAUM. Refer back to the October 1981 issue to the present.

[8.] JACOB KRIGBAUM born: ?? April 1769, Frederick Co., MD. He married in the Evangelical Lutheran Church MARIA RIES (later known as RICE).

ANDREW JACKSON ORGAN born in old Alford Hotel in New London, MO. Parents from Bourbon County, KY. In the wagon train was grandfather KRIGBAUM.

Looks as though the KRIGBAUM's, RICE's and ORGAN families are on their way to Missouri.

This is where OUR GREAT MISSOURI BUNCH COMES FROM!

JACOB (KRIGBAUM, Sr.) leaves a will in 1835 in Ralls County, MO in which he names his children.
They are:
My sons: DAVID, JACOB, WILLIAM and JOHN.
My daughters: SARAH TRACY, ANNIE ASHURST, POLLY ORGAN and KATHERINE RICE. He also names two grandsons: JACOB and WILLIAM WHITE.

We have so much more on JACOB's children in Ralls County, MO that we are going to stop here. We plan to feature children of the immigrants next year and will catch up to JACOB and children at that time. I hope that you are able to see the similarity and yet the differences in the three immigrants, their children and their moves.

IF ALL OF YOU WOULD TAKE THE TIME TO SEND US YOUR FAMILIES and GO BACK AS FAR AS YOU CAN, WE WOULD BE ABLE TO FILL IN MORE OF OUR GAPS. PLEASE.
