MESSAGE FROM CAROL:
GREETINGS from Quincy, IL. We have had a fantastic 2 months, a month leading up to our reunion, September 6 in Center, MO and a month following, during which we have received many letters and visited with several of our members.
The Saturday before the reunion, ERWIN ULMER, ISABELLA MALONE, STAN & Joann LITTLE, ESTHER KRIGBAUM, and myself met at KAY JAMES where we compared notes, studied charts, and etc. We really enjoy this type of contact.
Sunday, Kay and I left early for the reunion to set up displays and get things rolling. Kay has made large charts for the 4 immigrants showing their descendants. We lined them up along the wall and were delighted to have members at the reunion from 3 of the immigrants...
JOHANNES WILHELM ...
.... JAMES KREIGHBAUM, wife, 2 daughters and their families from Ft. Madison, IA;
JOHANNES ADAM ...
.... EMERY CREEKBAUM, wife and 2 daughters from Marco Island, FL;
JOHANNES CONRAD ...
.... Rest of the people present.
The noon carry in was such a varied and delicious food with fabulous desserts (out of this world) that we wish all of you could have been here and shared with us.
Before the meeting began we tried to introduce everyone with some data on them but because of the crowd, soon went to families. Several of the people present gave some family nostalgia. EMERY CREEKBAUM told about his ancestor playing ball and hoeing in the field when at the century mark of 100 years.
JAMES KREIGHBAUM of Ft. Madison had some old tin type pictures of his ancestors.
We also had ERWIN ULMER from Nebraska with us this year. We have not linked ERWIN up to any of the immigrants as yet but enjoyed having him and don't despair ERWIN, we will fit you in yet.
During the meeting, the following items of business were disposed of.
The raising of the yearly dues was tabled last year but raised again this year. A motion was made and carried in the voting to raise the dues to $6.00 per year per family beginning September 1981.
It was voted by the members present at the reunion to retain the yearly reunion at Center, MO as the main one. Therefore we will be putting into action the auxiliary reunions. A committee is organizing one to be held in the Kansas City area for 1982 and another committee is working on plans for one to be held in the Ohio area for 1982. Details on these will be published in our newsletter by the first of the year. We hope, however, if with three different places to attend, you are still unable to come to one and there are Kriegbaums in your area, perhaps you can just meet and have your own mini Kriegbaum reunion.
I was gratified with our reunion this year and hope that all of you will start making plans NOW to attend the 1982 reunion at Center, MO, Kansas City, Ohio or wherever.
In closing I have three goals that I hope we can accomplish for the 1981 - 82 year. They are listed on the next page.
Page 2
GOALS FOR 1981-82
l. Complete our by-laws.
2. That each member or family will fill our a family sheet and the questionnaire that we are planning for this year.
3. To find the missing links for each of our lines.
I have completed a year as your president and have enjoyed it very much. I welcome any suggestions, ideas or comments you have. We have received a lot of nice comments about our newsletter and really appreciate them as in the busy time of getting it ready we sometimes wonder if it is worthwhile. We have also had nice reports from other societies on it so feel that it is a good project.
KEEP THE LETTERS COMING.

MESSAGE FROM KAY
The following information has been researched by your genealogist, Kay James, but she needs your help. I am quite sure that there are a lot of you out there who have in your possession a lot of information that you can't connect up with anything. PLEASE if you do have something that might help, please forward the information on to me. I wrote the above words for the April 1980 issue of "The Kriegbaum Heritage" and I want to thank the members who wrote in. One member in particular that I want to thank is Mrs. P.M. (Cecile) CONDIE of Salt Lake City, Utah. She sent me a lot of information that has helped fill in some of those gaps, (and believe me there are still plenty of gaps). She also helped us to get many new members. The following members AUBREY J. CREEKBAUM, JOE H. CREEKBAUM and RHEUBEN CREEKBAUM were also a great help.
The following work up is about MICHAEL KRIGBAUM , son of CONRAD and ANNA MARIA KRIGBAUM of Frederick Co., Maryland. He is the CONRAD who died in Allegany Co., Md. in 1821. I have been trying to locate CONRAD's son MICHAEL for seven years and I believe I have now found him. The reason why MICHAEL has been so hard to trace is because of the spelling of the last name. After he leaves Frederick Co., Md. during the years 1790 - 1800, his name seems to show up like this: CREEKBAUM, along with many other spellings but I believe his descendants are carrying the preceding name.
We have to be very careful not to get Michael's descendants mixed up with the descendants of ADAM CRIEBAUM who died in Washington Co., Maryland 1772 or before, as a lot of his descendants are also using the spelling of CREEKBAUM. And to make it even more difficult both men’s descendants are in Kentucky. Now for the work up on MICHAEL.. First I want you to read a letter Carol received:

Dear Carol,
I never thought I would see a query from a descendant of old MICHAEL CREEKPAUM, as I call him here. I am not a relative, but have always been fascinated by the man's name. We had wondered if that might have been an Indian name. I have copied quite a few old Greenup County cemeteries but never saw that name on any tombstone.
I know very little about the man, except that his surname always fascinated me, as I said. So many of the older Greenup County records were destroyed during the 1937 flood.
In April 1826 he brought a lawsuit against James Howe (son of John Wm., a revolutionary soldier and Indian spy), for trepass, over some land on the East side of Little Sandy River. So that may have been the section in which MICHAEL lived, or at least owned. It was part of the Charles Fleming 18,000 acres survey, patented Apr. 21, 1792.
In Greenup County deed book C., MICHAEL CREEKPAUM was witness to a deed dated Mar. 26, 1816, when Robert H, Grayson and wife Soponisba conveyed to Moses Kibby 150 acres of land on Barretts' Creek. That was then in Greenup County but later became a part of Carter County in 1838.
I know this is not much of anything to be writing about, but I just couldn't resist making a comment after seeing your query in the current issue of Kentucky Ancestors. See if your library has a copy of The History of Greenup County, Ky., by Nina Mitchell Biggs and Mabel Lee Mackoy. You may find MICHAEL mentioned in it. I would do it for you but a friend has my copy right now and I don't have time to go to the library. (Workers are installing storm windows on my house right now). I would like to know more about CREEKPAUM just for my own enlightenment, since I am so interested in all local families and have written much for local newspapers.

Notice how Evelyn Jackson was so fascinated by the surname CREEKPAUM. I am sure now that a lot of you see our problem.

The following letter was written in 1938 by a PHILLIPP KRIEGBAUM in Darmstadt Germany to a lady in the United States. We believe you will enjoy it as we have.
Before the war a student, KURT KRIEGBAUM visited me as he took upon himself the task of looking up the KRIEGBAUM history. He had good results too. Our forefathers originated from Eisenerz in Oestereich. In Odenwald (Hessen) in 1420 there were already KRIEGBAUMS, long before America was discovered. From 1639 I have all the information about the people who have possessed our KRIEGBAUM Homestead. (From 1639 an habe ich die lückenlose ahnen reiche aller, die unsern heiniatlichen Bauernhof
besessen haben). I was helpful to the searcher, and have also added information to the first months writing of which I will enclose a copy. Also, how the name KRIEGBAUM originated is cleared up. It originated from KRICHENBAUMHOF an estate where many Krichenbaüme (trees) stood. Krichen are a (art) ______ of prunes, or plums, a pure (steinobstsarte) stonefruit sort.
ABOUT AN (ERBHOF) HEIRESTATE
In the center of the village of Winterkasten at Oberlauf de Gersprenz lies a Erbhof (heirestate) (Homestead) which had been in the possession of LIPPE KRIEGBAUM since the end of the 30 year war (1618-1648). It is one of nine, of the same size Bauerngutern (Properties), which lie side by side, and each about 70 morgen large. Bounded on the east by the Gerarkung Landman and in the West by the Germarkung Winkel. In the center, about 100 meter from Bach (river) lies our homestead, surrounded by luscious meadows and fruit orchards (Wach münderichen Uberlieferungen, die durch farchungen in den archiven bestätist wurdens.) After transferring by mouth or words, which was proven by searching in the archives, the land was newly divided and settled after the 30 year war when most all of the inhabitants were destroyed and (Lenchen) Beautiful is a new and (schmucker) Bauernhof building yet more honorable is an old one. When I look around in my parents home, I am met at every step and stone with proof from the past. The house which was built in 1756, has the inscription over the house door, "Hannbals Laut." That was the builder of the house, the second husband of a KRIEGBAUM. After his given name Bals (Balthusar) even today House and family are called "Balse". If any one should inquire about KRIEGBAUM PHILIPP, so one can hear the question, which KRIEGBAUM PHILIPP.
However about the Balse Philipp every one in the village can give information. An inscription on the side of a building near reads: GEORGE PETER KRICHBAUM 1826 (That was the (Vuber) cousin who immigrated to America. Later they again wrote KRIEGBAUM.
An interesting family piece is a very large Bible of the year 1665 with large print and many pictures. One blank sheet contains hand written notations about baptisms, Godparents, etc.
I still recall very old household articles and utensils, which speak of our forefathers. One must of course understand their language. The old barn, which in my youth, still carried a straw roof, formerly stood in Schönmattenway" when it was dismantled, one of our (Vorführen) forefathers purchased the wood and built up again in our yard. Several years ago it gave place to a new larger structure, and so disappears one piece after the other, which had been so worth while in binding us to our forefathers.
Now something about the folks of my homestead. 300 years have passed since the birth of the first possessor yet there is proof of a straight line to the present. From what the present living relatives can remember, the so called "Bulset" KRIEGBAUM were a healthy class of people with many children (6 to 10) were the rule. The eldest son inherited the homestead, the others learned a trade or married one in another homestead. In the passes 100 years, 8 out of 10 in a family migrated to America. Most of them fared well, yet all their letters spoke of a longing for the old homeland. A great love of family, always ready to help others, and a
Page 6
AN ERBHOF HEIRESTATE(con't)
great love for singing, were always found in our families. When the whole family at eventide sat around the table, slicing beans, or pealing pears, etc., and father's eyelids became heavy, all we had to do was to begin to sing one of our lovely songs, in 2 or 3 tuned voices, and right after the first tones, he sang along with us, and all his fatigue was forgotten. Singing, my fathers sisters sat under the cow, while milking, and my sisters did the same. Gladly and often I visited my homestead and my old father, whom I found many times at his work bench making ladders, rakes, and other utinsils, regardless of his 81 years. Even tho some of us 9 brothers and sisters, due to our calling traveled different ways the feeling of a bond with our home earth and our strong (Bauern geschlect) remains with us.
Therefore our name bas no connection with the most terrible of all sins, With The Wars.
With the hope that this letter will give you all joy, I greet you most heartily.
Yours,
PHILIPP KRIEGBAUM

EDIORS NOTE: This letter was sent to us by PATRICIA CULLY a recent new member who sent a lot of other material including copies of old photos which we plan to print in a later issue. We are grateful to Patricia for sharing with us.
The following letter was written to W. G. KRIEGBAUM, another member, who passed it on to us. We believe it will connect to the above letter.
Aug. 7, 1963
Dear Bill-
Will take the liberty of calling you that as I have a Bill too. My oldest son was named for his two grandfathers GEO. for my father ( GEO. KRIEGBAUM) & Wm. for my husbands father (Wm. P. Stockdale).
My memory (which is poor) was given a jolt yesterday, when my cousin (ARTHUR K) came with a large envelope containing your letter, one I had rec'd from a distant cousin and a family record he had seen also a picture which meant nothing to me altho my father might have shed some light on it if he were living. It was a picture of a shop-evidently a blacksmith shop owned by a S. C. KRIEGBAUM. There was an older man and a young man. He seemed to think I would know what it was.
I met this LAWRENCE in Phoenix thru the phone book when my bro was living there. This is the bro. you visited in west covina and who is now living in Palos Verdes Estates, 516 Via Media.
Now as I said, my memory is poor, and I am wondering if I ever answered your nice letter, which I fully intended to do. I know I took it out to my aunt, but she was not able to shed much light on the situation.
I am enclosing LAWRENCE's letter as this might give you some clues.
You notice that his grandfather was NICK K. My grandfather's name was PHILIP and then there was a CONRAD. They all came to America when young men but the parents and others of family remained in Germany. My grandfather PHILIP was 22 when he came over. You can see by the enclosed letter that they came from Hesse Cassel or Darmstadt. While it is some distance from Bavaria it is the same general direction.
But your folks came over comparatively recently. I will try to get the date when my grandfather came over. My father would be about an 100 yrs old if he were living so you see it was many years ago when my g.father came over. Found later it was 1851.
My cousin, ASA K and wife, were touring in Europe a few years ago and they went to Hesse Cassel & Darmstadt &

LETTER - Continued:
recently moved to Palo Alto, Cal.
I imagine that we have a family connection in some way. Perhaps your folks descended from the part of the family who remained in Germany. You notice that our family had KRIEGHBAUMS.
Am sorry that I cannot give you any more information. My only living aunt where I get some of my info is about 85. Her father died as a result of and accident (horse runaway). He was about 65 at that time.
If I get any more information will let you know. I don't know how to address this as you said you might be moving but I'll take a stab at it.
Yours,
EDITH K. STOCKDALE
P.S. my husband passed away July 31, 1962 I try to keep busy.
NEW OFFICERS
The nominating committee presented the names of HAZEL T. MILLER for Vice President and DOROTHY STEELE for secretary for the next two years. With unanimous vote they were elected by the members present at the reunion. HAZEL and DOROTHY have served in these offices since the beginning of our organization and both do a fine job.

The following is an attempt to do a work-up on the 4 immigrants, who are JOHANNES PHILLIP, JOHANNES WILHELM, JOHANNES ADAM and CONRAD, by your genealogist KAY JAMES. Whi1e you are reading this I want you to pay close attention to the many various spellings of the last name. I am sure that you will see we have quite a problem.
At our annual reunion this year one of our members, JAMES KREIGHBAUM of Ft. Madison, Iowa volunteered to teach the other members how to spell their name. Then another of our members, EMERY CREEKBAUM of Florida stated that he should be the one to teach us how to spell the name. I always thought that I knew how to spell the name. For 22 years I thought it was KRIGBAUM. So then I went to our president CAROL KRIGBAUM and she said she thought I was correct. HA! HA! HA! Oh yes, then there is EARL TRASTER from Pennsylvania who refers to our family as the K-BAUMS. EARL, that isn't safe either. I believe we will refer to them as the C, G, K - BAUMS.
Now I would like to borrow from the KRICHBAUM HISTORY 1749 -1 918 compiled
by Judge CHARLES KRICHBAUM and RAYMOND L. KREIGHBAUM, page 9 & 10. This history was reprinted in the Midyear 1978 edition of "The Kriegbaum Heritage" by the permission of Dr. FRANKLIN KRICHBAUM son of RAYMOND L. KREIGHBAUM.
"The first record of immigration of our family is found in the records of Pennsylvania. On September 14, 1727, the provincial council of Pennsylvania adopted the following resolution which has given us an authentic beginning of KRICHBAUM FAMILY HISTORY in what is now the United States.
The document to which our ancestors subscribed their names, preserved in the archives of the Pennsylvania Historical Society is:
The masters of vessels importing Germans and others from the continent of Europe shall examine them whether they have leave granted them to Masters of vessels by the Court of Great Britian for the importation of these foreighners and that a list be taken of all these people, their several occupations and place whence they come and shall be further examined touching their intention in coming hither; and that a writing be drawn up for them to sign, declaring their allegiance and subjection to the King of Great Britain and fidelity to the Proprietary of this Province, and that they demean themselves peaceably towards all His Majesty's subjects and observe and conform to the laws of England and the Government of Pennsylvania."
All male persons above the age of 16 years did repeat and sign their names or make their mark on this declaration. The thirty thousand names signed to this document are about the only record of German immigration, and we are glad that each Krichbaum signatures is plainly written, showing that they came with an education fitting them to become worthy, respected citizens."
We have come to believe that there are four brothers not three. We believe the other one is CONRAD KRICKBAUM of Frederick and Allegany Counties in Maryland. We believe that CONRAD would have been under the age of 16 so he would not have signed his name to the declaration. Please do try to understand this is theory being put together by your genealogist. It has not been proven as yet.
Now I will try to do a small workup on each of them. In this issue I have a family group sheet for JOHANNES WILHELM (If we have room) and wife ANNA BARBARA. We will put in a family group sheet for each of the 4 immigrants during the next year.
I. JOHNNES PHILLIP settled near Philadelphia PA. At the Reformed Church, in Germantown, PA. PHILLIP KRICKBAUM married a 2nd time to A. ELIZABETH SCHULTZ, daughter of NICHOLAS SCHULTZ of Lower Merion. PHILLIP and ELIZABETH and had 8 children. Who was PHILLIP'S 1st wife? It looks as though he was married when he came to this country in 1749. The family group sheet on PHILLIP and his family will be printed in the January 1982 issue along with a lot of other information about this great immigrant.
II. JOHANMES ADAM resided for a while in the Tulpohocken, Berks Co., PA.
Page 9
area which shows he was living close to JOHANNES WILHELM KRICKBAUM. But then some time after 1770 he seems to move out of the state of Pennsylvania into Washington County, Maryland.
I have a paper showing the distribution of the estate of ADAM CREEBAUM at Haggerstown, Washington County, Maryland.
Administrators were EVA MARY CREEBAUM & David Jones. This paper shows he had 4 children named:
PHILLIP CREEBAUM, BARBARA, ADAM, and CHRISTINA.
Christ Lutheran Church of Tulpohocken, Berks Co. PA lists the births of 4 children to ADAM and EVA MARIE KREIGHBAUM.
Another record shows the birth of an additional child in 1766 [CHRISTINA].
This record is at the Atalaha Evangelical Lutheran Church at Rehrersburg Berks Co., PA.

We are sure there is a mix up in the children of JOHANNES ADAM and JOHANNES WILHELM. Will show this later.
III. CONRAD - This one first shows up in the Frederick County, Maryland records about 1764 with the birth of a child MARY ELIZABETH born 13 Nov. 1764 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick County, Maryland. In 1798 Allegany Co., Maryland in Deed Book B, page 434, recorded 6 March 1798, William Shaw (minister) requested that a record be made that the household of CONRAD CREIGHBAUM and Thomas Barcus be stipulated as house of worship of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1816 this man
purchased land in Muskigum County, Ohio. The record in Zanesville, Ohio listed his residence as Allegany County, Maryland. He signed his name this way: CONRAD KRIGBAUM JR.
This makes me think the father is CONRAD KRIGBAUM, SR. On the ship Brothers dated September 22, 1752 JOH CONRAD KRIECHBAUM arrived in America. Is this man possibly the father or is it CONRAD, Jr? We have come to the conclusion that CONRAD was living somewhere in Pennsylvania before Maryland. Where is he from 1749-1764? I have found the following records in Pennsylvania:
From Egles Notes & Queries: CONRAD KRIEGBAUM on list of communicants 4 April 1762 at Little Tulpohocken Church, Berks County PA., who received the Holy Supper.
NOTE: Washington County Maryland was created in 1776 from Frederick County Maryland. Evidently ADAM and CONRAD lived very close to one another.
This CONRAD died in 1821 in Allegany County Maryland where he left a will which names his children. I have a copy of this will.

Weiser, list her name as AN. CATH. d/o WILHELM and AN. BARBARA KRIEGBAUM and the sponsor as the Schoolmaster in Heidelberg.

Petition of ADAM KREIGHBAUM eldest son of WILLIAM KREIGHBAUM
of Bethel, deceased, that his father died intestate leaving 9 children:
The Petitioner, ADAM,
PETER, WILLIAM, EVE, (wife of William Emrich)
CATHERINE, JOHN, GEORGE, BARBARA and GERTRUDE.
CORRECTION by Nancy Peche: EVE KREIGHBAUM was the wife of Johann ADAM EMERICH according to their marriage at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, Stouchberg on 05 Oct 1779 and the baptisms of 7 of their children at the Altalaha Evan. Lutheran Church at Rehrersburg, Berks Co, PA.
According to the Krichbaum History, WILLIAM, PETER and JOHN all went to Starke County Ohio. I believe this to be true with the possible exception of PETER. I believe PETER did not go but his son PETER Jr. who was married to ELIZABETH DAVIS went to OHIO. I desperately need help here, I need the names of the children of PETER, Jr. and wife ELIZABETH. Our Vice President HAZEL MILLER sent us a list of Starke County Ohio Administrations records 1809 - 1890. I wrote to the court house to get copies of these but they wrote me back saying that they could not take the time to do it but would be glad to show me their records in person. I am unable to go there. If there is anyone out there who could get copies of these for us, please write me. I will be glad to pay for the copies. Here is the list sent to us.

I have spent a lot of time reading census records which has been a great help in tracing and identifying the different branches of our great family. But I also need help here. It now takes us 3 - 6 months to get census records to us because they all come from Texas. If any of you have read any census records please send us what you have in your files. I especially need help in OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, and INDIANA.
