MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
HELLO from the newly elected president of the Kriegbaum Heritage
Association and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our
retiring president, Mrs. ISABELLA MALONE for her work in making our
reunions, news-letters, correspondence and research a success. She is
tireless in her effort to promote new members and keep our records
complete. She has agreed to concentrate on indexing all family sheets
and Heritage newsletters in the future months (no small undertaking) and
I certainly appreciate her doing this work. We feel we have made great strides in compiling family lines and in
getting close to the German link in our research. We have 2 people in
Germany at this time looking for someone or someplace that will be of
help to us. We are also concentrating on the areas of Maryland and
Pennsylvania now and are making new contacts every day in order to prove
the immigrants and their families. KAY JAMES will continue as our
genealogist and she has her finger on each line. I hope to hear from many of you this
coming year and will do my best to answer each letter.

Dear Mrs. James,
I read about The Kreigbaum Heritage in the May/June 1980 "Genealogical

maybe there is a connection. I am enclosing my genealogy chart. I would
like to correspond with any one that has any connection with JOHN
KREIGHBAUM or his wife CHRISTINA WEAVER. I have more information about

Mrs. Carol L. Krigbaum, Editor
Dear Carol:
At long last my wife, Mary, & I got to Allegany County, Maryland, last
week to investigate her family and mine. Mine, being the KREIGHBAUMS.
We visited "Georges Creek", JUST south of Frostburg, a beautiful narrow
valley being defaced by soft coal strip mining, running southwest and
including the towns of Lonaconing and Barton, on Route 36. Your April,
1980, edition of HERITAGE refers to the 1800 census of the PHILIP
KREIGHBAUM family as living in "Georges Creek". On the same page 5, you
show the 1850 census of the HENRY KRIGBAUM. The 18 year old
female's name (You show "A____") is ANN, followed by 17 year old JOHN.
The rest of the names fall in place. I read the tape and can't do any
better with "STANESLAUY" than the people who settled on that odd
spelling. MARY wrote KAY JAMES in April that we'd be going to Allegany County but
she fell down on May 5th, breaking elbow, wrist, ribs, and front teeth.
You may wish to tell KAY that this includes some of the promised
research.
In the Revolutionary Records of Maryland by Brumbaugh, I found where
PHILIP KREEHBAUM took the PATRIOTS OATH OF FIDELITY &. SUPPORT in
Washington County, Hagerstown being the seat. He was # 253 in a list of
271 names on the return of Worshipful Henry Schnable. No date but the
other lists were all in the spring of 1778. These oaths were taken
before the magistrates of the various courts in the counties of
Maryland, foreswearing any allegiance to the King of Great Britain or
his successors and to be true to the state of Maryland.
Presuming that you are gathering a list of all the KREIGHBAUM pioneers
of whatever spelling, I gleaned the following names from the:

I hadn't enough time to check out all the censuses, but I did go over
the 1800 and found the Georges Creek family of PHILIP KREIGHBAUM had no
males, 16-26, as shown in the April, 1980, HERITAGE. The balance of
PHILIP' s family, all of CONRAD's and PETER's checked out perfectly. And
I've already mentioned the HENRY KRIGBAUM family in the 1850 census. I
did not find the PETER KRIGBAUM family in the 1850 census. That doesn't
cast doubt on they're being there, only that I missed them on the tape,
which was rough to read. I jumped to the 1870 census to see if any were left in Allegany County.
No KRICKBAUMS, CREEKBAUMS or variations of the spelling are indexed. The
same for 1790, except that CONRAD CRICKBAUM shows up in Frederick
County, Frederick being the seat, with 2 males over 16, and 2 females in
the family and one male under 16, for a family of five.
In other research, I found my Revolutionary KRICHBAUM ancestor, WILLIAM
KREIGHBAUM, born in Berks county, PA in 1754, who you've often mentioned
in the HERITAGE. This time, he turned up in the HISTORY OF CENTRE AND
CLINTON COUNTIES (Pennsylvania), Linn, 1883. I located this book in the
Aaronsburg Library last spring. Why was I in Aaronburg? The KRICHBAUM
Family History, 1918, described the emigration of the KREIGHBAUMS from
Brush Valley in the spring of 1814 from Aaronsburg as well as the big
bash they had when the wagons took off for Ohio. With the short library
hours, I could do little with the tremendous amount of material, so I
obtained this massive work on interlibrary loan and offer the following
excerpt:
"KREIGHBAUM, WILLIAM, migrated into Brush Valley about the year 1799,
and bought in that year the place now owned by Joseph Kraemer. His
dwelling stood a few rods south of the place where now the brick house
is situated. He came from Bethel township, Dauphin County, according to
statement in an old deed. There was a distillery near his dwelling
house, with which he was assessed as early as 1803. It may have been
built earlier. He sold his property to Jacob Kreamer, April 21, 1814,
and moved to Ohio. The KREIGHBAUMS and GARMANS are related."
Indeed, WILLIAM KREIGHBAUM's wife was CATHERINE GARMAN.
ln the same volume, and others I've seen, WILLIAM KREGHBAUM
was listed as among the taxables as being taxed for owning the distillery. My
sister, HAZEL TRASTER MILLER, and I have had a good chuckle over that,
as our grandmother, SADIE KREIGHBAUM WISE, was WILLIAM KREIGHBAUM'S
great-great granddaughter. Grandma SADE was a militant temperence worker and
once served as the president of the Stark County (Canton), Ohio WCTU. With
the information that the distillery was already on the
property when WILLIAM KREIGHBAUM bought it in 1799, grandmother may feel
less injured by the revelation.
Too long. Sorry. Have a great reunion!
Earl W. Traster

THE CREIGHBAUM's
by Max K. SNIFFEN
My great-grandfather, GEORGE W. CREIGHBAUM, appears to be the most
outstanding blacksheep found in my pedigree. There has been no
information left in the SNIFFEN - STEDMAN family records about him so the
tracing has been more difficult that in any other recent line. In my
youth all I ever heard about him was that he was a highly intelligent
lawyer who was worthless in most respects. When I finally located him
as the head of a family in Marietta, Ohio in the 1850 census he was
listed as a carriage maker with two children and a wife,
AUGUSTA STEDMAN, who gave us most of the New England touch
to the pedigree. In my great-aunt MARY STEDMAN GATES' diaries
many mentions of GEORGE C. CREIGHBAUM were made, most of them
uncomplimentary, altho she would occasionally show a softer attitude toward
him.
The story goes that great-grandmother AUGUSTA STEDMAN CREIGHBAUM
died in 1863 when my grandmother, MINA CREIGHBAUM SNIFFEN was six years old.
GEORGE married within a reasonably short time and was unable to care for
his two daughters, MARY and MINA, so we find them in the care of ELIZABETH
STEDMAN, the youngest daughter of BIAL STEDMAN, first in Belpre, Ohio and
then in Marietta. GEORGE CREIGHBAUM visited them several times a year, but
seems not to have contributed anything to their well being except good will.
He seems to have had an attraction for both girls, but from the Gates'
diaries one cannot tell what it was. ELIZABETH STEDMAN died in 1870 and the
girls moved over to live
with MARY GATES and her sister, CHARLOTTE REGNIER in Marietta.
There they stayed until both sisters had married.
GEORGE CREIGHBAUM had one son, CHARLES, by his second wife,
CATHERINE HUTCHINSON. CHARLES remained with his father until
GEORGE died in 1885 of TB and in absolute poverty. He then went west to
Nebraska and made a successful life for himself. He visited our house in
Marietta about 1925 and looked like an oversize version of my father - so
Dad's features must have been those of GEORGE CREIGHBAUM.
My search for the parents of GEORGE CREIGHBAUM has been one of the toughest
of the whole family and I have accumulated pages of notes that lead to nothing
close to him. My first real lead was in the census reports that showed
his parents to be from Pennsylvania, altho one report on his brother,
ALLEN CREIGHBAUM, said their mother was from Maryland. The next real
break that I got after over two years searching was the death certificate of
ALLEN
CREIGHBAUM found in the courthouse at Marietta this summer - saying he
was born in Uniontown, Pa. Since a PHILLIP CREIGHBOIM had shown up near
Uniontown in the 1790 census I headed for Uniontown and spent several
days there in the courthouse and library. I found two generations of
PHILLIP S. CREIGHBAUMS (Jr. and Sr.) but no females to go with them.
The elder turned out to be a Revolutionary War Vet and was called a
hatter by the local newspaper way back in the early 1800's. The latter
was a stone mason - manufacturer of tombstones among other things. I
have a blank spot still between 1829 and 1848 when GEORGE CREIGHBAUM
turned up in Belpre, Ohio and most of the evidence is circumstantial but
strong. The
CREIGHBAUM's seem to be a queer bunch of krauts.

7. Administration papers for ADAM CREEBAUM were filed in Washington Co.,
Md. (Hagerstown) on 8 Jun 1779. His widow, EVE MARY and David Jones
were listed as co-administrators. Heirs were 1/3 to the widow and the
remaining 2/3 to the children: PHILLIP, BARBARA, ADAM and CHRISTINA.
Since PHILLIP S. CREIGHBAUM entered the armed forces in the
Revolutionary War at Hagerstown in 1776 and there seemed to have been no
other CREIGHBAUMS in that area at that time it seems safe to assume that
"our" PHILLIP is the son of ADAM CREEBAUM.
ADAM CREEBAUM might have been a son of one of the three original members of
this family that entered the country in 1749, but his death in 1779 seems to
make this rather improbable and he does not fit into the records we have
of these three: PHILLIP, WILHELM and ADAM. The only clue I have to a
possibility of his identity is an item in the Pa. Archives, Series 2,
Vol. 2, p 99 saying that "ADAM KRIERCHBAUM was naturalized 12 Aug 1764
in Berks Co., Tulpehocken Twp." Since newcomers were usually
naturalized at the time of arrival or soon after it might be assumed
that this date was near arrival time. Since this ADAM settled near the
other KRICHBAUM's it is probable that they are all related and came from
the same section of Germany, Wurtemberg.
PHILLIP S. CREEKBAUM, Sr. was born in 1758 in Maryland and died 2 Mar
1826 at Uniontown, Pa. He married CATHERINE JOLLY. He enlisted in the
Army in July, 1776 at Hagerstown for three years. He was in the "German"
Regiment headed by General Mulenberg and fought in the battles of
Brandywine, Frentown and Princeton - also others. He was pensioned later
under Cont. Md. S 40860. In the 1790 census he is listed as head of a
family in Fayette Co., Pa. having 2 boys under 16 and three females.
*****Note by Nancy Peche*****:
The baptism for PHILIP KRIEGBAUM, son of ADAM KRIEGBAUM [the immigrant] and
Anna Maria, is listed in the Christ Lutheran Church, Stouchsberg, Berks Co,
Pa records on page 5. Philip KRIEGBAUM was born: Sept. 22, 1758; bapt:
Sept 24, 1758.
There is a PHILLIP CREAKBAUM listed in the tax records of Alleghany Co.,
Md., Dist. 2, Georges Creek Hundred in the period 1804-1812, holding
Lots 3965 and 3966 for 100 acres. This might have been land given in
bounty for service in the Revolution. He also held 15 acres called
Phillip's Fancy.
PHILLIP CREICHBAUM bought from Henry Beeson (developer of Uniontown) Lot
#8 called Mill Seat on Redstone Creek on 26 Nov 1803. This may have
been on the SE side of the "great road" to Cheat River and I believe,
was called Market Street. PHILLIP and CATHERINE also bought from Henry
Beeson and Mary property which in turn they sold to George West on 25
May 1808. PHILLIP bought another 6* acres on 19 Nov 1808.
The next mention of PHILLIP Sr. in the court records was on the
administration of his estate in the March Court of 1829. This is in Book
2, page 369, and shows PHILLIP, Jr. as administrator of an estate of
$155.63.

While hunting in the records of the National Archives in Washington I
found this letter in the file of Phillip S. CREIGHBAUM, Sr.:
"The undersigned, an heir at law to PHILLIP CREIGHBAUM asks the
Department to examine and report upon the case of said PHILLIP
CREIGHBAUM. He was a Revolutionary Soldier and drew a pension at
Uniontown, Pennsylvania and died about 1822.
I wish to know if he was entitled to back pension and bounty lands.
Write to George M. Woodbridge, Marietta, Ohio.
Respectfully yours, GEORGE W. CREIGHBAUM."
While the above does not give the heir at law relationship it seems
fairly safe to assume that PHILLIP was his grandfather.
5. The PHILLIP S. CREIGHBAUM, Jr., who handled the estate of
PHILLIP, described above, is the only child of which we have any record.
Although we have no birth date on him it appears that he was born about
1780 and probably in Pennsylvania, from census records on his sons,
GEORGE and ALLEN who lived in Washington Co., Ohio in the period
1850-1880. From the History of Uniontown, Pennsylvania we are told that
PHILLIP lived in a two story log cabin, some four or five feet above the
sidewalk
and approached by steps. He was a stonecutter by trade and manufactured
gravestones and grindstones and did considerable business in his line.
He was a versifier and composed many of the verses carved on the
gravestones still standing in the old burying grounds of Uniontown.
We have no record of PHILLIP, Jr. after the administration of his
father's estate. The local paper listed PHILLIP, Sr. as a hatter.
4. GEORGE W. CREIGHBAUM first appears in our history about 1848
when he worked for one day in the rebuilding of the home of Ebenezer and Mary
STEDMAN GATES' which was destroyed by fire. In this fire AUGUSTA
STEDMAN jumped from an upstairs window and sprained her ankle. GEORGE
W. CREIGHBAUM and his wife AUGUSTA STEDMAN were married 6 June 1848, which
must have been very soon after the above incident. They were married at
Belpre, Ohio, where, incidentally both are buried on the lot of BIAL
STEDMAN,
father of AUGUSTA. Soon afterward they moved to Marietta where he worked as a
carriage maker.
In the 1850 census GEORGE and AUGUSTA were shown as having children:
GEORGE M. and MARY ABBE (15 months) but these never show in the
records afterwards so it might be assumed that they died while young.
According to the diary record of MARY GATES the oldest daughter who
passed into the care of her aunt ELIZABETH STEDMAN was MARY
CREIGHBAUM, born 18 Apr 1853 and MINA CREIGHBAUM,
born 31 Aug 1857. CHARLES CREIGHBAUM the only surviving son, was
born 4 Jan 1869 in GEORGE's second marriage.
MARY died after the birth of her third child (the first two of which died)
on 22 Sept 1876.
GEORGE died on 8 Nov 1885, about six months after the birth of his
grandson PARKER SNIFFEN, my father, so Dad never knew his maternal
grandparents.

3. MINA CREIGHBAUM SNIFFEN was certainly an unusual character
and I never knew her well enough to piece her story together. She
was tiny and very much"the lady" when I met her but was strong
willed and , I suspect, interested primarily in MINA. She persuaded
her husband, WILL SNIFFEN, to stay
on the road selling furs after he was financially able to retire and
wanted to settle down and rest. This probably brought on a somewhat
premature death to both of them during their 65th years of life.
The MARY GATES' diaries don't paint a very likable picture or her, but
MARY had been a widow for up to 50 years and may have been a bit stuffy
herself. MINA appears in these diaries to have been a very busybody,
who kept everyone working but herself - altho she at times pitched in
when she liked the job and it was for her own good. MARY, of course,
charges her misdemeanors all off to her father, GEORGE CREIGHBAUM, and I
suspect she was about 80% right. If we have some undesirable
characteristics I have a tendency to charge them off to this line -
altho none of the others are without defects too.
WILL SNIFFEN and MINA CREIGHBAUM SNIFFEN were successful
financially, and some or this may have
been due to her demanding attitude, although she must have been a fair
manager. They ended up with a nice home, two rent houses, two buildings
downtown and a small farm up the Ohio river. MINA lasted only two years
after WILL SNIFFEN died in 1920 and we had to return to Ohio from West
Virginia
to take care of this property. Dad failed in his own business in 1929
and lost the Ohio property too, having put it up for collateral at the
banks. Thus ended the good times of WILL and MINA SNIFFEN.
