MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
It was in the July 1975 issue of the Newsletter of the Kansas Council of
Genealogical Societies that the following notice appeared:
CALENDAR
31 August- First Family Reunion and Workshop CRICKBAUM, CREEKBAUM,
KRAIGHBAUM, KRIEGBAUM, GRAIGHBAUM, etc. Families - Lions Club Building,
Center MO. Bring food and service for your family and any pictures.
bibles or other genealogical information.
Although this, our first Reunion was well attended, our family has
continued to grow and we have had to increase the number of newsletters
to our members. Last year was a very bad year for your President but after making a trip
to Mayo's things are looking up and I hope to be able to make up for the
deficiencies of last year in getting out our Family Newsletter.
First of all, however, I plan to write to many of you, as I get the
time, and hope that you will answer my query as to what you know about
your ancestors and giving us complete information as to your own
families, complete with dates of birth, marriages, deaths, etc. Let us
know if you are working on your own family histories and if we can
assist you in any way, just ask and we shall endeavor to answer your
questions. It is our hope that with your help, we may be able to print a sequel to
the Krichbaum Family History, correcting any errors which we know to
exist and also giving a complete index from the original immigant
ancestors down to the present tine, if possible. We, however, need your
help if we are to accomplish this. Some of the index is already
completed down to DANIEL and we hope before the year is out that we may
be able to add more names.
So, please, please, send all the information you have or can obtain from
family members, Bibles, diaries, pictures and any other means. Begin now
to write a family history: family legends are interesting, even if you
cannot substantiate then. However, think what it would mean if you could
do so. There has long been a legend in our family as to the origin of the
Springer name. It seems that the Duke of Austria had a brother who was
very popular with the people. The Duke was jealous and inprisoned his
brother in a tower surrounded by a moat. The brother, who was a sort of
devil-may-care person didn't worry about it. However, he finally had
become lonely for his family and so he leaped out of a window into the
moat and joined his loved ones. The Duke admired his brother's bravery
and so dubbed him "Sir Springer" and thus began the name of SPRINGER.
Page 2
Another story in our family is that of JANE OLDFIELD. BARNEY OLDFIELD
of Indianapolis Racing fame was a cousin of KATHERINE KRIGBAUM (KRIEGBAUM) McGINNIS.
As the story goes, an
ancestress, JANE OLDFIELD , used to carry her grandson piggyback. As he
grew older, she still continued to carry him on her back but his father
punished him for allowing her to do so. As a consequence, she is
supposed to have made a new will, omitting her son as heir. To date,
this story has not been confirmed but we shall still hope to find which
JANE was the OLDFIELD and possibly confirm, or disprove, this legend.
Our Genealogist, KAY JAMES, has received much information concerning
antecedents of the various spellings of our family name, but in order
that she can complete the information so that we can print a new
history, we do need all the information we can get and that means we
need to know your own histories, down to the last baby. PLEASE HELP!
The picture in the upper right hand side is that of WILLIAM THOMAS
KRIGBAUM. He changed the spelling of his name from KRIEGBAUM
because everyone seemed to be omitting the "e" when writing to him.
The picture below is that of his descendants through his daughter KATHERINE
and her son, THOMAS McGINNIS. The men in the picture are all McGINNIS except one. Identifications of
persons shown are: KLIO HOBBS and wife MARY JO McGINNIS; JOHN , wife and son seated in
front, ROSALIE (THONEN) and JACOB; STEPHEN and wife LINDA (WUTHERICH)
with daughter, ERIN, in front of mother and son, MATTHEW, in front of
JACOB; next in rear is Sister RITA; GREGORY (unmarried) and EDWARD with
wife, CAROL (PARKER) holding son ELIJAH with other son, JEREMY on her
right.

HENRY MICHAEL KRIGBAUM has arrived at the home of SAM and LINDA
KRIGBAUM. We congratulate Sam & Linda. HENRY MICHAEL is a grandson of
Uncle HENRY and Aunt ALMEDA KRIGBAUM and they always have a large number
of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren at the annual
reunion.

wish her a most safe & enjoyable trip.
A GENEALOGY BROWSE
Because Kay James and I have so much material about all the different
lines of KRIGBAUM's and cannot possibly take all of it to the reunion so
that it can be looked at there, we are issuing a SPECIAL INVITATION to
those attending the family reunion from a distance that are interested
in the records to spend either Saturday before the reunion or Monday
(Labor Day) after the reunion at my house, 1112 Monroe Street, Quincy,
Il just going through our family sheets, pedigree charts, wills, land
deeds, letters, charts, maps, and other data.
We have accumulated quite a bit this past year and feel that it will be
some time before we can get it all published in the newsletter. We also
feel that if other researchers know what we already have on hand, they
could spend their time in searching for other records and we would not
have so much duplication.
We will spread everything out throughout the house so that you may get
to it easily. I also have a photocopy machine at my disposal if you
would want to copy anything.
Quincy is only 20 miles further for the reunion than Hannibal and we
have a lot of motels, etc. here.
NOTE FROM KAY JAMES, Genealogist: Kay has been unable to complete all of
the records she is looking up for MICHAEL CREEKBAUM in Kentucky, which
she spoke about in the April issue of "THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE." Therefore, if she
can complete her research, we will have more on this in the next issue.
HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL AT THE REUNION!

Dear Carol;
Received my first copy of "The KREIGHBAUM HERITAGE" and found it to be
most interesting. My husbamd is a descendant of one of three brothers
who came to America September 2, l749. Will list this information on a
separate sheet. These brothers were named in DR. WOLF's letter in the newsletter.
There must have been 2 sets of brothers who came to America about three years
apart.
I am trying to find the parents of JACOB KREIGHBAUM born ca 1810 in Pa.
and listed in Marshall County Indiana census of 1860. He is probably a
grandson of one of the three brothers as emigration information was
found at the Plymouth Historical Society- Marshall County, Plymouth
Indiana.
I am enclosing copies of my genealogical findings of our KREIGHBAUM
lineage and would like any back issues you might have available of your
newsletter. Please advise me of the cost or send newsletters with
billing and I'll send you my check by return mail.
Sincerely,
LUELLA E. GAFF

NEWS FLASH
We received just in the last day records from a church in Berks Co. PA
that we feel will help us to get rid of the confusion on two [2] of the
immigrants' children. We have felt for a while there might be a mixup in
the KRICHBAUM HISTORY but have not had adquate records to prove the
point. We have not had time to get this all in order and also will be
trying to get furthur records so perhaps we will have information at the
reunion or in the next issue of The Kreighbaum Heritage. We are very
excited with this and hope it will lead us to a more accurate book.
PLEASE SEND US YOUR FAMILY SHEETS ...THEY DO HELP....

Dear Kay,
I wanted to get copies of this info I obtained to you before the family
reunion. I do hope that you are better and things are running smoother
for you and yours. Believe me, you are not alone. In the past 2 years, I
have had a death, a big wedding and a birth (caesarian) in my immediate
family- along with all the other problems a widow must cope with. Each
year I hope to make the reunion and each year something or someone
prevents me from attending. I'm still hoping to be the first Krigbaum
descendant attending from California!
There is something else I thought I should clear up with you. My g.
grandmother MARY JANE CLARK and your g. Grandfather GEORGE W. KRIGBAUM's
younger sister ELIZA F. KRIGBAUM did come to California
and did not die in Ralls Co. Mo. as indicated in an earlier "HERITAGE". She
may have been married 1st to WILLIAM B. KRIGBAUM (a cousin) and he could
have died, or they were divorced in Mo. She married twice here in
California-
(l) SAMUEL K. DEWS, date _____. Couple had a son named WILIAM THOMAS
DEWS b. May 5, 1873 or 4 and d . July 18, 1950 age 77 yrs. (I have death
record).
WILLIAM T. DEWS never married. SAMUEL K. DEWS d. Dec. 25, 1887, age 66
yrs. ELIZA F. KRIGBAUM DEWS married 2nd or 3rd FREDERICK W. GERTZ ca
1890. He blew himself up with black powder, according to PHYLLIS REED,
my dad's cousin (deceased). I don't have date of his death. ELIZA F.
KRIGBAUM DEWS GERTZ died June l4, 1909. She is buried near the Rice
Family Plot at Peoria Cemetery, Brown's Valley, Yuba Co., Ca. along with
SAMUEL K. DEWS , their own son WILIAM THOMAS DEWS.
Info from tombstone, HELEN THOMSON sent me from Yuba City.
I have corresponded both with HELEN and SHIRLEY CARTER in Red Bluff, CA.
Incidently, MARY JANE KRIGBAUM CLARK died in 1923 and is buried, along
with other Clark family members, at Bown's Valley cemetery also- but another
part of cemetery.
I did fill out my family sheet for you, Kay- then
proceeded to mislay it!
However, I shall do another. My father's mame was HAROLD DEAN BROWNING.
Sound familiar? Wonder where the DEAN came from? Have you ever been able
to unravel the emigrant KRIGBAUM family, or ascertained when our CONRAD
KRIGBAUM arrived or from where? Sure miss receiving the "Krigbaum Heritage".
You gals have done a terrific job and I really appreciate it. I know you
are very busy Kay- but would it be possible to obtain a copy of military
record of War of 1812 for JOHN KRIGBAUM? And JACOB KRIGBAUM's will?
Did any of our family fight in the Civil War? I wonder which side? Missouri
was considered a "border" state at that time, so I imagine sentiments or
sympathies were "split". I know, my g. grandmother didn't approve of her
father's many marriages! (and told her father so).
Have you ever visited the area of our g.g. grandfather's house? I
suppose- it's no longer there. Which reminds me- in 1976, I received a
letter from Mrs. PAUL DAVIS who resided at 7OO S. Main St., New London,
Mo. She had done some research for PHYLLIS REED on our KRIGBAUM family.
Anyway- MARY lived in the house built by LEWIS TRACY, who married 27
Dec. 1826, SALLY KRIGBAUM, daughter of JACOB KRIGBAUM, Sr. The "old" part
of the house was built between 1835-1840. The "new" part was built by
Jonathan Briggs 1892. I trust Mary is still living. She had to give up
research because of "failing health and eye-sight".
Golly Kay- I'm really rambling. Am enclosing dues and enough for copy of
Reunion picture that year. (If available) Would love to have one. Are
names of family on back of pictures? Please write when you can.
With Fond regards,
DORIS

WILL OF SARAH KRIGBAUM TRACY
In the name of God Amen. I SARAH TRACY or the county of Doniphan in the
territory of Kansas being of sound mind and memory and considering the
uncertainty of this frail and transitory life do therefore make, ordain,
publish and declare this to be my last will and testament. First after
all I give and bequeath unto my daughter ELIZA A. WILLIAMS, the sum of
fifty dollars.
Second, I give and bequeath the remainder to my son JOSEPH L. TRACY,
and he is to appropriate the same in educating my three youngest children
namely MARIETTA TRACY, aged about thirteen years old, ABBA M. TRACY
my son about ten years old and SALLIE TRACY seven years old and I desire
him faithfully to discharge his duty in educating my children as aforesaid.
The above amounts of money are to come from JACOB KRIGBAUM and MARY
KRIGBAUM my father and mother who died in Ralls County Missouri leaving
certain amounts of money to me, and I furthur give my son JOSEPH TRACY
full power to collect the said amounts of money.

Dear Kay;
It is so good to hear that the Krigbaum Heritage is still alive I am
sending you some material on my lines this very day. I have enjoyed your
little publication more than any of the others to which I have
subscribed. It has been full of interesting material and I hope you will
be able to continue it. I haven't always agreed with some of the line
assertions made, but that certainly is understandable in this business-
and what helps make it exciting.
I hope you won't be aggravated by my uncomplimentary remarks about my
great grandfather GEORGE CREIGHBAUM. I am sure he was not representative
of the family, and if any of us does not have "black sheep" in his
lines, he is fooling himself. I have diaries of MARY GATES, my half - 2G
aunt, from 1865 to 1898, which have numerous comments regarding the
CREIGHBAUM's in the Marietta, Ohio area, and only those re GEORGE are
rough- although I think she liked him in some ways.
I have a copy of the intestate proceedings re ADAM CREEBAUM taken from
the records at Hagerstown, Md., but they tell only the story I have in
my notes. If the History of the Family written about the three brothers
is accurate, I do not believe my line is from theirs. I am inclined to
back into the assumption that my ADAM CREEBAUM is the ADAM KRIERCHBAUM who
was naturalized 12 Aug l764 in Berks Co.,
Tulpehocken Twp. I have no other record on this person to substaniate my
assumption. Since my book" written for my three sons only, was completed
I have learned more about the CREIGHBAUM's in Brown Co., Ohio. This coming
summer while up north I want to go there and see if I can fill in some
of my missing data. I have not yet found a death date or place for
PHILLIP, Jr. or his wife, MARY ALLEN. I have found her sister, ELIZABETH,
in Barnesville, Ohio under the name FLOYD.
If I can be of any furthur assistance to you, please feel free to call
on me. We will be at 5626 Newington Ct. Bethesda, Md. 20016 from about
May 1 until about Oct. 1, so if any issues come out during that time
please send mine there. And let me know where I stand on my dues."
Best wishes to you and all the Krigbaums-------
MAX SNIFFEN
NOTE: Mr. Sniffen has kindly given his consent for us to publish in the
"Heritage", our copy of his book written for his sons. We will include
it in a future issue.

Dear Mrs. Kay James;
Thank you for the back issues
of "The Krichbaum Heritage", which I found very interesting.
I filled out the Family group sheets to the best I could.
I sure wish I had more information on my BARBARA KREICHBAUM.
So far I have not found more than her daughter MARY ELIZABETH HOY
MEYER's birth certificate, which says a daughter MARY ELIZABETH
was born to JOHN HOY and wife BARBARA KREICHBAUMEN.
My husband and I have been going to cemeteries where Krigbaums are
buried and I am enclosing 2 sheets of tombstone inscriptions that we
copied. In the 1980 copy of "Krigbaum Heritage" a Mr. WOLF mentions some
of the Krigbaums that are on the tombstone sheets.
Thank you, I am

space I retyped them and abbreviated as much as possible.

Dear Carol;
Thanks ever so much for sending the back issues of the "Kriegbaum
Heritage". I am really enjoying reading them and trying to put all the
various families together.
I'm enclosing a copy of my pedigree charts showing my descent from
BARBARA KREICHBAUM and JOHN HOY of Northumberland and/or
Berks Co., Pa. As yet I have been unable to locate BARBARA's parents. As far
as I know their daughter, MARY ELIZABETH HOY b. 1792, was the eldest child
in the
family, thus making BARBARA born probably between 1767 and 1774. JOHN
HOY married a second time to ANNA MARIE _______. There were 15 children
altogether, born between 1792 and 1825, and according to baptismal
records, most likely those born between 1808 - 1825, were children of the
second marriage. Therefore, BARBARA probably died somewhere between
1806-1808. If it would help, I can send you a group sheet on the HOY
children. I didn't include it now because BARBARA the mother, is the
only KREIGHBAUM I have.
Perhaps you will find something in your files to help me, and in the
meantime I will keep on the look out for all KREICHBAUMS (and variant
spellings).
I did find two in my local phone book that you may want to add to your
mailing list.
Thanks again, and hopefully the hunting will be happy for all of us.
Sincerely,
MURIEL GREEN
