Vice President: Mrs. Hazel T. Miller, 3247 E. Fairfax Rd., Cleveland Hts. OH 44118
Secretary: Mrs. James Steele, Palmyra, MO 63461

HELLO- Just a note of explanation. The Kriegbaum Heritage will be sent
out from Quincy, IL for the immediate future by CAROL L. KRIGBAUM and
KAY JAMES. This is being done because our present editor and also our
president, Mrs. ISABEL MALONE, is having some difficulties. She is at
present under a doctor's care and I am sure that each of you who read
this will join with Kay and I in thanking her for the very fine issues
she put out and her acceptance of the responsibilities of both
editorship and office of the president at the beginning of our
organization. We are but 5 years old and she has been very much a
contributing factor in the organization. ISABEL does have quite a bit
of material ready that she was not able to get to you last year, but
when she gets it completed you will receive the 1979 issues in one.
Therefore, we are starting with the 1980 issue. We do not promise the
standards set by ISABEL but we will do our best. We do want to emphasis
again that if you will send in any material such as family sheets, items
of weddings, deaths, anniversaries and other important happenings, it
will be a better newsletter. Only you who are interested in preserving
the Heritage of the Krigbaum, Kriegbaum, Krieghbeum, Krichbaum, and
other spellings can help to make this newsletter a success. Thank you
for your patience and understanding of the problems and time in this
task.
REUNION REPORT
Although we had a lesser attendance this year at the Annual Kriegbaum
Reunion held September 2, 1979 at Center, Mo., there was much enjoyment
and gladness in seeing each other, in talking about and sharing new
findings in our genealogy, new clues to follow, and in just remembering.
One note of sadness was the absence of UNCLE HENRY KRIGBAUM, who was
loved and enjoyed by all of us who knew him. He died just a couple of
months after the 1978 reunion. UNCLE HENRY loved baseball and was on the
ball diamond as he had been at every one in 1978. New officers were elected for Vice-President and Secretary. Vice-President Hazel T. MILLER was re-elected and for Secretary , DOROTHY STEELE was reelected.
Awards for the following were given:
Eldest Male Descendant - PAUL KRIGBAUM, Hannibal, MO.
Eldest Female descendant - Mrs. ISABEL MALONE, Topeka, KS.
Youngest - BRANDON MICHAEL KRIGBAUM, son of MICHAEL & JANET KRIGBAUM,
Monroe city, MO.
Farthest Distance - Miss MARGARET McGINNIS, Topeka, KS.
Best Display - Mrs. DOROTHY STEELE, Palmyra MO.

We congratulate RAYMOND & THERESA (Krigbaum) HAGGART on the celebration
of their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married Nov. 2, 1929 in
Hannibal, Mo. by Rev. John Golden.
THERESA is the daughter of the late SAMUEL MOSES KRIGBAUM and Mrs.
DORTHA L. KRIGBAUM SMARR. Raymond is the son of the late Addison and
Anna Mary Haggart. Raymond is retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad and Theresa is
retired from INTERCO.
Dear Mrs. Krigbaum,
I saw the Krigbaum Heritage mentioned in the May/June "Helper." This
interested me very much, as I don't believe I have ever seen the name in
any queries. The mention of your quarterly made me feel that maybe there
is, after all, a possibility that I may find where my MARY KRICHBAUM
fits. I have discovered that a very good way to make contact with
others researching the names I am is to subscribe to a family quarterly,
so I am interested in yours. I'd be interested in buying any back issues,
if available. I am also wondering if, by chance, you have come across my MARY
KRICHBAUM, b. Lebanon Co, Pa, Married ca 1778 Lebanon Co. to JAMES
BERRY. I don't even have a date death, but believe that she was buried
in Huntingdon Co, Pa. Her son, (my ancestor) WILLIAM KRICHBAUM BERRY
was b. 1802 in Brush Valley and all of her children were born in Pa. I have
collected a bit of miscellaneous Krichbaum / Krigbaum / Kreighbaum data but
so far have not found parents of my MARY. Please advise about your quarterly--price etc. I'd also appreciate any
info you might have to help me with my MARY KRICHBAUM . Thank you.

We are printing the following letter received in 1971 from Dr. JAMES
M. WOLF who has since passed away. We believe this may be a clue to
those who are looking for this MARY but this theory has not been
proved. We offer this information in the hopes that those who are
interested in MARY will find the link and provide the newsletter with
the information.
Dear Mrs. James,
The name I am interested in is JANES, not JAMES.
I still haven't made search for my papers. About [KRIEGBAUM] "war tree", and its not
meaning anything, let me put it this way, it means no more in German
than it would mean in English. The two words have meaning separately, of
course, but they do not have an special combined meaning, nor do they
make any particular sense when used together. Let me give examples of
combined words with special meaning:
Shoe tree
Hall tree
Family tree
Pear tree
Now these, with the possible exception of pear tree are not literal;
they have a special meaning, and the words have a reason for being
together. In contrast, war tree is nonsense. One could find a special
reasoning that could give it meaning, in some historical event, or the
like. Something like Charter Oak, maybe. One the other hand I don't know
of any history that could have made it a special name. That certainly
doesn't prove that it does not exist. On the other hand, there is great pressure to turn names into
recognizable words. By way of example, I think "single tree" above, is
derived from "swingle tree", and refers to the pivoted nature of the
thing. It probably gave the name to the double tree it fastens to.
People sincerely want words and names to be logical. As another example,
"cole slaw" is fast becoming "cold slaw." Cole is a word of foreign origin
referring to cabbage. It doesn't make sense as an (apparent) adjective,
but cold seems to. Curiously, slaw makes no sense either, but is
accepted as the name of the dish. Probably it is really the adjective.
I would guess it may mean Slavic cabbage.
Our ancestor evidently had a name that sounded like KRITCHBAUM. It
didn't mean anything in Pa. Dutch, and they gradually changed it into
KRIEGBAUM, or even CREEKBAUM, with the first half in English, which is
pretty ridiculous.
As I said I looked for a possible original, in the big German
dictionary. The best I could do was KRIECHBAUM , which is some sort of a
special plum tree. I found that was indeed a name in both Germany and
America. (con't next page)
Page 3
(Dr. Wolfs' letter con't.)
I forget if I told you about the great simplification of the JANES
family tree, by ptomaine.
Thanks for the Krigbaum references. I find most of these familiar
names. Somewhere I have charts showing how they probably connect.
Really more than probably. I had tried drawing some charts based on the
tax lists in the Pa. Archives. (There are rather more entries than you
list.) My charts were curious when compared with the truth. Deduction
was not too red hot. (12 Nov. 1979):
Mr. Laimbeer said of
JOHAN WILHELM KRICKBAUM and JOHAN ADAM KRICKBAUM of
the ship "Albany", "Based on the fact that these two men... had children
in Berks County in the 1750's would lead me to believe they were
brothers.(sic). It is very possible that HANS PHILIP KRICKBAUM, listed at
head of names above, might be a third brother rather than the father.
Records unearthed so far would seem to show that said HANS PHILIP
KRICHBAUM went to Montgomery County, Pa. rather than Berks County, Pa.,
where the other KRICKBAUMs went.
"The name in the Montgomery County records spell the name CREEKBAUM. In
all I have have discovered some dozen ways to spell the name."
"I am in the process now of making up a chart of the Krickbaums to try
and place the BERRY - KRICKBAUM marriage which I assume must have taken
place about 1800 or possible a year or two earlier. (sic) When completed
I shall send a copy on to you. Everything on it is backed by proof."
"I am going to do the same thing with Womeldorf in the near future"...
"I have a probable connection to the GERMAN or GORMAN family on the
Albany..."
"Communicants, Lutheran Church, Miles Twp. May 1806
1802 - WILLIAM KRICKBAUM and wife MARIA CATHARINA
1804 - JOHN KRICKBAUM and SUSANNAH CATHARINA his wife
PETER BARRY and wife ELIZABETH were members of same church in 1802."

No, this is by no means all the data, but it is what the charts are
based on I think. I'm tuckered, and want to quit now. I ought to xerox this so I will know
what I have sent you, but I feel sure that if I do I will delay so long
that it won't get mailed. I have not found the name of my Kreigbaum correspondent; It is not in my
address book for some reason. It will turn up when I make a wider search
for information for you. Do prompt me with a letter now and then or I
will forget all about it.
Yours sincerely,

Krigbaum Reunion
The Krigbaum families
come from far and near
Just to get together
year after year.
Some come from Kansas
Others come from Illinois
Some come from Texas
and bring their girls and boys.
All roads seem to lead
to our meeting place.
Every year around this time
there seems to be a race.
Good food everywhere
laughter fun and joy.
Sure glad to meet you
do you know my boy?
Uncle Henry Krigbaum
is the oldest male around.
But he's just like a kid
the youngest to be found.
He plays baseball
and we all clap and cheer.
When you're a Krigbaum
you're so glad to be here.
Here comes Kay and Bill
Isabelle and Margaret too.
There's Mike Krigbaum and
his pretty wife and crew.
Look there! Carol and Gene
bringing in their food.
Everybody seems to be
in a happy mood.
We all get together
because we want to see.
Who were our ancestors
what kin are you to me?
Two hundred years ago
a little more or less.
The name Krigbaum meant
"creeping tree"
was passed to us, I guess.
Kreichbaum, Krickbaum, Creachbaum and Krigbaum
all spelled a different way.
Started out from Germany
and came to America to stay.
Great grandfather Conrad
would be surprised to know.
Since the time he came here
how his family's grown.
So, all of you Krigbaums
that are here today.
Keep records of your
family and pass them on their way.
Be proud of our family
and meet us here each time.
Krigbaums are a family
that came from Conrad's line.
One time we all were strangers
it's really great to be.
One of the Krigbaum family
Uncle Henry, you and me.
Respectfully, Mrs. DOROTHY STEELE, Secretary
I dedicate this to UNCLE HENRY KRIGBAUM. He has left us since I wrote
this. He was a wonderful gentlemen. We all loved him.
