THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE NEWSLETTER
Volume III; No. 1 - Mid-Year 1978

President: Mrs. William [Kay] James, 308 S. 11th St., Quincy, IL 62301
Vice President: Mrs. Hazel T. Miller, 3247 E. Fairfax Rd., Cleveland Heights, OH 44118
Secretary: Mrs. James Steele, Palmyra, MO 63461
Treasurer: Mrs. David Felker, 600 South Sixth St., Quincy, IL 62301
Editor: Mrs. Michael Malone, 2915 Atwood Avenue, Topeka, KS 66614

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

As you can see, there is no message from our President but we are substituting one from our Genealogist, Carol L. KRIGBAUM, who is a cousin by marriage to Kay KRIGBAUM James. We are very sorry that this issue of THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE is so long overdue. Kay, our President, has had a number of illnesses, school problems and lack of time for the past several months and since I have been filling in for her, I have also had some of the same problems. We do hope to get back on schedule soon.

Carol L. KRIGBAUM

Carol KRIGBAUM reports that she and Kay JAMES had a nice visit with Mrs. William (Pat) GRONNIGER of Shell Knob, MO who is working on the LEWIS TRACY - SARAH KRIGBAUM line (see page 3) this issue. Kay, Pat and GENE KRIGBAUM (Carol's husband) all have the same G-G-Grandfather but a different Gr. Grandfather or mother. They really enjoyed comparing notes with Pat, Carol reports. She asks also that any of you who are working on the KRIGBAUM lines should call or visit or even write to them and they will be happy to compare notes with you, either personally or by letter. Carol is Genealogist for THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE.

EDITORIAL COMMENT:

There has been considerable difficulty in getting out this edition of THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE. It has been a year since the last one and part of the blame can be laid at the door of our members. However, KAY JAMES, our President, has had her hands full with sicknesses and school problems, in addition to the fact that both she and her husband work. When our "family" was first organized in 1975, KAY your editor had corresponded with the result that the first Reunion was held at Center, MO on the Sunday before Labor Day of 1975 with a very large crowd in attendance. In the beginning you all wrote many letters but of late correspondence has died down. You will note from the section LETTERS that the number is small considering that they represent a whole year. In an effort to break this deadlock, we are going to attach to this NEWSLETTER a reprint of the KRICHBAUM FAMILY HISTORY, 1740 - 1918, and will then also print information covering the descendancy of another CONRAD KRICHBAUM whom, we believe, came to America at a later period. With this information, we challenge you, our members, to write to us and give us whatever you believe may have some connection with your ancestry. PLEASE, we beg of you, WRITE! WRITE! WRITE!

The following is for Mr. THOMAS J. KRIGBAUM:

I KRICHBAUM Johannes CONRAD
II KRICHBAUM Johannes ADAM
III KRICHBAUM ADAM, Jr.
IIII KRIGBAUM John married Elizabeth EMMETT
III4 KRIGBAUM DANIEL
IIII5 KRIGBAUM DANIEL

KHN Editor comments:
IS this what you mean? The KRICHBAUM HISTORY shows that DANIEL, son of ADAM, JR. had no descendants. DANIEL 11115, was a son of JOHN, 1111.

***CORRECTIONS BY NANCY PECHE:

If THOMAS J. KRIGBAUM descends from John KRIGBAUM, who married MARIA ELIZABETH EMMETT, his ancestor would not be Johannes CONRAD KRICHBAUM, the immigrant. Immigrant CONRAD did not have a son by the name of JOHANNES ADAM. I have two DANIEL KRIEGBAUMs in my database, and each one descends from a different immigrant ancestor. The first Daniel, born in 1798, descends from the immigrant ancestor Johannes ADAM, while the second Daniel, born in 1806, descends from the immigrant ancestor, Johannes WILHELM (see below).

1. DANIEL KRICHBAUM
born: 11 Jan 1798; m. Catharine WEIMER in Northumberland Co. Pa.
Daniel's father: ADAM KRICHBAUM Jr.
b. 29 Dec 1762; m. Anna Regina SCHNEIDER
ADAM, Jr. was the son of
Joh. ADAM KRIEGBAUM (immigrant) and Eva Maria WEBER.

2. DANIEL KRIEGBAUM
born: 11 Oct 1806; Aaronsburg, Centre Co, Pa.
father: Johannes [JOHN] KRIEGBAUM
b. 01 Jan 1762; m. Maria Elizabeth EMMETT
JOHANNES [JOHN] was the son of
Joh. WILHELM KRIEGBAUM (the immigrant) and Anna Barbara RETTIG.

HONOREES at REUNION:
Presentations were made by KAY JAMES to the following:

Eldest male descendant: Mr. Henry KRIGBAUM, Monroe City
Eldest female descendant: Mrs. Isabella M. MALONE, Topeka, KS

A BIG VOTE OF THANKS!

Our vote of thanks goes to Mr. RONALD KRIGBAUM of St. Louis, MO and CAROL (wife of H. E. KRIGBAUM, former Vice President), for obtaining the plaques which were given to the above mentioned honorees. They were engraved "KRIGBAUM REUNION, Sept. 1977."

HOLOCAUST AT SOUTHGATE, KENTUCKY

Mr. BERNARD KRICHBAUM of Cincinnati, OH called our attention some time ago to an item in the daily newspapers about the night club fire at Southgate, KY, in which hundreds of lives were lost. First reports were that 120 perished in the flames. However, it was later reported that the death toll was near 400. A grim and alarming statement! What is of special concern to us is that one of the victims was a CARL KRIGBAUM of Louisville.

LETTERS:

We received the following letter from PAT GRONNIGER, Knob Hill Acres, Shell Knob, MO 65747 and would like to share it with you.

Dear Carol and Kay,
I think I've finally located all of the information I promised to send you and am sorry to take so long. I had to go through all the information you gave me and sort out all I had copied about both sides of the family at the Historical Society and that took a little doing. One of the things I wanted to be sure to tell you is that I don't believe the WILLIAM TRACY who married FRANCES TALL or TELL was a child of LEWIS and SARAH [KRIGBAUM] TRACY. He must have been a brother of LEWIS. So far as I know, the list enclosed in this material shows all of their children. It is one that has been passed down through the family.

As for biographical sketches they are I think quite interesting but not necessarily accurate. I had a birth date of 1906 for LEWIS (from census records), and one sketch shows 1808, etc. I don't believe the military information is quite correct either. I have some information from the Kansas Adjutant's records that I think would be more accurate. I have not gone into military records yet - some day I'll get around to that.

Kay, if it is possible, could you send me the copy of the small book the lady sent you about the KRICHBAUM FAMILY. If it's permissible, I'd like to make a copy of it and, if not, I would like to read it and send it back to you. I've had time to think about everything since I got back, and am sorry I didn't take a look at that when you offered it to me.

It really was a pleasure meeting both of you and also your family, Carol, and it's doubly nice for me because I'm enjoying finding relatives, as we have always had so few - at least known about them. I wish my parents knew about all of this - I think they would be delighted. Since my Mother was a writer, it's too bad. (cont. on page 4)

Page 4

She didn't delve into our family history - especially since she would have known her great grandmother, EMILY TRACY, etc.

I have read and reread the copies of THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE you gave me. That's quite an undertaking. I wish I didn't live far away - I'd love to help you with it. I hope if any of you (or all of you or whatever!) come our way, that we will have the opportunity for a visit. Some day, too, I hope to be able to come to one of the reunions. I know that would be a wonderful experience.

(How about the next one, Pat?)

If any of you want more information, let me know. There isn't a whole lot - just some information on JOHN M. TRACY (work, etc.) his children, and THOMAS BRENNAN (work, etc.). I'm beginning to find that I have collected a surprising amount of information on both sides of the family, though, and am looking forward to continuing the research. Thursday morning, on the way to Kansas City, I'm going to detour a little way to Warsaw, MO so I can go to the Courthouse and see if I can find out something about one Jesse Garland - one of my father's great-grandfathers.

Keep well, and have a wonderful summer - if it ever gets here!

Best regards to both of you,
PAT GRONNIGER

***NOTE BY Nancy Peche***
Check page 14 of this newsletter. You will find listed SARAH (Sally) KRIGBAUM who married LEWIS W. TRACY. She was the daughter of JACOB KRIGBAUM & Maria REIS.

Page 4, LETTERS continued

To Mrs. Kay James - 3 / 17 / 1977:

We visited my husband's brother, CYRUS KRIGBAUM, last week at Florissant, MO and for the first time read "THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE". We found it very interesting and want to be included on your mailing list. My husband, LEE ROY KRIGBAUM, is the son of JOHN HERMAN and ORA ELLEN (SHEARWOOD) KRIGBAUM, both deceased. JOHN HERMAN KRIGBAUM's parents were ALBERT and POLINA (GOODNIGHT) KRIGBAUM. We want very much to attend the annual reunion and will come if at all possible.

ALENE CLARK KRIGBAUM

To Mrs. Michael Malone:

My mother, Mrs. ELLEN KRIEGBAUM, received a copy of "THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE" - Volume I, April 1976, No. 2. She misplaced it until recently. I am very interested in becoming a member and would like to receive back issues. The issue she received a year ago was addressed to Mr. EDWARD KRIEGBAUM, 4034a DeTonty St., St. Louis, MO 63110. My father had a brother named EDWARD but he died in 1968 and to my knowledge, he never lived in St. Louis but in Hillsboro, MO and DeSoto, MO. I have some information to contribute to the paper but need to know to whom I send the information. Many thanks!

Mrs. DOLORES A. (KRIEGBAUM) CROSS

To Mrs. William James - 8 / 15 / 1977:

Our family descends from JOHANNES ADAM KRIGBAUM identified in the KRICHBAUM FAMILY HISTORY (1749 to 1918) which has been cited in the Heritage. If this man is designated as # 11 (as suggested in Vol. III, No. 3), my great grandfather, DANIEL KRIGBAUM is # 1114. He was the (cont. on page 5)

Page 5

Grandson of JOHANNES ADAM and was born 11 January 1798 in Northumberland County, PA and died at Scranton, PA on 11 April 1872. He married CATHARINE WEIMER on 3 May 1829. She was born near Womelsdorf, PA on 5 March 1808 and died at Scranton, PA on 23 April 1884. She was the great-great-granddaughter of the rather famous John Conrad Weimer (1696-1760).

Contrary to "THE KRICHBAUM FAMILY HISTORY 1749-1918", page 16, DANIEL and CATHARINE had ten children. My grandfather, WILLIAM LUTZ KRIGBAUM, was the eighth child - born 20 November 1848 at Reading, PA and died 10 November 1943 at Decatur, IL. Of the other nine children, we know from the family Bible that three died young, two had no issue and only names and some dates on the other four (which I will furnish if there is any interest).

I hope this brief history will be of some interest. I wish you continued success with this fine project.

THOMAS H. KRIGBAUM

EDITORS NOTE:

Mr. THOMAS KRIGBAUM, of course there is interest. Send us the rest of the information and we will publish it in the KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE. Further, you are correct in stating that DANIEL would be 1114 and we assume from your letter that he had ten children, although the History of the KRICHBAUM FAMILY indicates that there were none. Will you please send us a Pedigree Chart and/or Family Group Sheets? We could use them in the October issue of the HERITAGE. We should like very much for you to attend the Reunion so that we could compare your records with those of others and we can assure you that you would have a great time meeting all your "relatives."

Mrs. Kay James - 7 / 17 / 1977:

Yes, I am planning on coming to the KRIGBAUM ( KREIGHBAUM, KRICHBAUM ) Reunion September 4th in Center, Missouri. I should have sent you a little information at a time, instead of waiting almost a year to accumulate details and a picture of my ALFRED KREIGBAUM, born 1835 in Stark County, OHIO. On a separate page I will show you my mother's line from JOHN ADAM KRICHBAUM. Also I am still trying to prove that my PETER descends from JOHN ADAM KRICHBAUM.

Would you send me the name of the person who gave you the information in the October 1976 KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE on page 6, Column B, regarding GEORGE KREIGHBAUM's birth date and CATHERINE SHUTT's birth place. I was under the impression that both GEORGE and CATHERINE were born in Pennsylvania and lived in Miles Township, Centre County, PA before coming to OHIO in 1814.

***COMMENT BY NANCY PECHE***
Hazel Traster Miller is correct. George KREIGHBAUM and CATHERINE SHUTT did live in Miles Twp, Centre Co, Pa before moving to OHIO. And George was definitely born in PA.

Page 5 Letters Continued:
Also I have a baby picture from my grandma's album of PHOEBE, daughter of AMANDA KREIGHBAUM and WILSON WISE. If you send me the address, I can contact them before the reunion and we can compare our facts.

HAZEL TRASTER MILLER

P.S. "UNCLE HENRY" in Kreighbaum Heritage resembles a picture of my MARGARET KRIGBAUM TRASTER.

NOTE by Kriegbaum Heritage: HAZEL did come to the reunion in 1977 and became Vice President of THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE. We really enjoyed meeting her and hope she will be able to return in 1978. She has completed her group sheets and ancestor chart and they are being printed in this issue. FURTHER: Hazel, you are not the only one to have an "Uncle Henry": look-a-like. My Uncle CARLT ( JAMES CARLTON ) KRIGBAUM could have been a twin.

Page 10/11 (revised and edited for clarification)

KREIGHBAUM ANCESTRY IS AS FOLLOWS:
[submitted by Hazel Miller]
[***** NOTE BY NANCY PECHE: Hazel's introductory lineage is incorrect but will be corrected below]

Hazel writes:
"JOHN ADAM KRICHBAUM, one of three sons of Johannes Conrad........"

"......1840 Census of OHIO, Lake Twp., Stark Co, lists a PETER KREIGHBAUM, Jr. with one daughter of 20 or under. MARGARET was 18 in 1840. In 1850 Census of Plain Twp., Stark Co, OH, PETER and ELIZABETH KRECHBAUM, age 64 and 63, have living in their household DAVID (age 24) and CATHARINE (age 16). My MARGARET (dau. of Peter KRIEGBAUM and Margaret TRAUT) was 28 in 1850 and was married in 1841, so she would not be listed. QUESTION?? Where does PETER fit in? Does he belong to JOHN ADAM or JOHN WILHELM line? I believe the above PETER and ELIZABETH were married in 1807 in Union County, Pa. and not the parents of my MARGARET.

Hazel Traster Miller
3247 East Fairfax Rd.
Cleveland Heights, OH 44118

Nancy Peche writes:
JOHN ADAM KRICHBAUM was not a son of Johannes Conrad. Hazel's lineage starts with the immigrant ancestor JOHN WILHELM KRIEGBAUM (born 1718 in Germany) who was brother to JOHN ADAM KRIEGBAUM. Johannes CONRAD, the immigrant, was not Hazel's ancestor]

Hazel Traster Miller's correct lineage should be as follows:
(I will use the KRIEGBAUM spelling to make it less confusing]:
Gen. 1. JOHN WILHELM KRIEGBAUM (b. 1718)
Gen. 2. WILLIAM KRIEGBAUM (b. 1754)
Gen. 3. GEORGE KRIEGBAUM (b. 1788)
[I show from KHN John Grimes report, JOHN baptized: 23 Jan 1791
Parent: William KRIEGBAUM, Sponsors: The Brothers.
Baptized at Salem Lutheran Church, Lebanon Co, Pa. ]
Gen. 4. WILLIAM KRIEGHBAUM (b. 1813)
Gen. 5. ALFRED KRIEGHBAUM (b. 1835)
Gen. 6. SARAH KATHERINE KRIEGHBAUM , married GEORGE A. WISE

Finally, Hazel, the PETER KRECHBAUM ( Kriegbaum ) and ELIZABETH in the 1850 Census in Stark Co, OH were the ones married in 1807 in Union Co., Pa., so you are correct. ELIZABETH's maiden name was DAVIS. PETER KRIEGBAUM born: 20 April 1786, who married ELIZABETH DAVIS in 1807, was the son of JOHN PETER KRIEGBAUM b. 18 Nov. 1752 and his wife. ANNA MARIA HOFFMAN. He was the son of the immigrant JOHN WILHELM KRIEGBAUM and ANNA BARBARA RETTIG.

KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE WRITES:

Hazel Traster Miller points out a mix up as show in the Newsletter for the second and third quarters 1977, between Capt. GEORGE KREIGHBAUM and GEORGE KREIGHBAUM. The 1918 History of KRICHBAUM FAMILY was confusing to read especially if reading from a copy where the pages were not in sequence. She states that her CAPT. GEORGE KREIGHBAUM was from Stark County, OHIO, and was a grandson of JOHN ADAM KRICHBAUM, original ancestor. She further points out that on Page 16 of the KRICHBAUM HISTORY of 1918 the GEORGE KREIGHBAUM mentioned was a son of ADAM KRICHBAUM, Jr., and also a grandson of JOHN ADAM KRICHBAUM, original ancestor. She informs us also that she had additional information as to where WILLIAM KRICHBAUM and his son, GEORGE, lived in Centre County, Pennsylvania, before 1814. Perhaps Hazel will give us some of that information so that we can print it in future issues of THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE for the benefit of our members.

*****CORRECTIONS and ADDITIONAL INFORMATION by NANCY PECHE:

The original ancestor of CAPT. GEORGE KREIGHBAUM was the immigrant JOHN WILHELM KRIEGBAUM --not-- JOHN ADAM. This will be proved in later issues of the newsletter. Volume VI, October 1981, NO. 4 will prove with baptismal records, JOHN WILHELM (Jr.) b. 17 Dec. 1750, who married CATHERINA GARMAN, was the son of JOHN WILHELM and not JOHN ADAM. This will be discussed again in VOLUME III, October 1983, No. 4 of THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE.

The correct line of descent for the two GEORGE KRIEGBAUMs is as follows:

JOHN ADAM KRIEGBAUM ( the immigrant ) m. EVA MARIE WEBER
JOHN ADAM, Jr. (b. 29 Dec 1762) m. ANNA REGINA SCHNEIDER
their son JOHN GEORGE (b. 02 June 1792) m. BARBARA REED ?

JOHN WILHELM KRIEGBAUM ( the immigrant) m. ANNA BARBARA RETTIG
JOHN WILHELM, Jr. (b. 21 Nov 1754) m. CATHERINE GARMAN
their son JOHN GEORGE (b. 23 Jan 1791) m. CATHARINE SHUTT

The following information was never printed in the original issues of THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE. This information is about WILHELM KRIEGBAUM b. 21 Nov 1754 who married CATHERINE GARMAN and his brother JOHANNES b. 01 Jan 1762 who married MARIA ELIZABETH EMMETT. Also mentioned is another WILHELM KRIEGBAUM, my g.g.g. grandfather, born in Berks Co, Pa., who lived in Haines Twp., Centre Co, Pa. from ca 1800-1807. His wife was CHRISTINA [ Derry, Dewey, or maybe Berry]. We're unsure of CHRISTINA's maiden name and I have no positive proof of the parentage at this time for my g.g.g. grandfather WILHELM KRIEGBAUM. His father's name, we're told by relatives who lived in Bedford Co., Pa., was ADAM KRIEGBAUM.

JOHANNES b. 01 Jan 1762 m. MARIA ELIZABETH EMMETT]

[I don't think William KRIEGHBAUM and his wife CATHARINE GARMAN moved to Centre County until after Feb. 1, 1798. They were still living in Bethel Twp., Berks Co, Pa. around Feb. 1st, 1798 when three of their children died. Their children's deaths are recorded at Zoar's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mt. Zion, Bethel Twp., Berks Co, Pa. [now Lebanon Co, Pa.]
HEINRICH - died: 26 Jan. 1798
JOHAN JACOB - died: 12 Feb 1798
JOHN WILLIAM - died: 01 Feb 1798.

I did not find WILLIAM KRIEGHBAUM and his wife [CATHARINA GARMAN] in the Census of 1800 living in Centre Co. Pa, but I did find his brother JOHANNES KRIEGBAUM [spelled GREABON in the Census] and my ancestor, WILLIAM KRIEGBAUM [spelled GRUBUM in the 1800 Census] living in Haines Twp., Centre Co, Pa. in 1800.

Reference: History of Centre County, Pa., by Linn.
p. 206: KREIGHBAUM, WILLIAM, migrated into Brush valley about the year 1799, and bought in that year the place now owned by Joseph Kreamer. His dwelling-house stood a few rods of the place where the brick house in situated. He came from Bethel Township, Dauphin County, according to statement in an old deed. There was a distillery near his dwelling-house, with which he was assessed as early as the year 1803. It may have been built earlier. He sold his property to Jacob Kreamer, April 21, 1814, and moved to Ohio. The KREIGHBAUMS and GARMANS were related.
p. 41: William KRIEGBAUM, Haines Township, (newly formed) in 1801.

[re - the second Wm. KREIGBAUM (distillery, Miles Twp.), married CATHARINE GARMAN. The other William KREIGBAUM, in Haines Twp., is my ancestor whose wife was CHRISTINA].
In the INDEX OF NAMES by Linn: one is listed as WILLIAM and the other as WILLIAM , Jr....I suspect that WILLIAM, Jr. was the son of JOHN WILHELM KRIEGBAUM, ( the immigrant ).

Newsletter pages 10/11continued:

We are giving you a lot of information in this issue. If you see something that seems to coincide with something in your own family, such as a story about some ancestor who seems to fit into your own antecedents, please let me know at once. We have asked a number of times for Ancestor Charts and Group Sheets from our members but few have been received. It makes no difference whether you can complete them or not. Just send them in and somewhere along the line we will be able to fill in the blank spaces of our total relationship.

***** CORRECTIONS by Nancy Agnew Peche:
# 12 above is incorrect:
WILLIAM KRICHBAUM (Kriegbaum) b. 21 Nov 1754 was the son of the immigrant JOHN WILHELM and his wife ANNA BARBARA RETTIG --NOT-- his brother JOHN ADAM KRICHBAUM (Kriegbaum) the immigrant. JOHANN CONRAD was not the parent of the two immigrant brother's [JOHN WILHELM and JOHN ADAM KRICHBAUM] who came to America in 1749. Their parents were JOHN WILHELM KRIEGBAUM and ANNA CATHERINA PFEIFFER.

Report by John Grimes stated in the last published issue of the KHN, that the sponsors for WILHELM b. 23 Jan 1791 were: "The Brothers." This is supposed to be the birth record for JOHN GEORGE KRIEGBAUM son of WILHELM KRIEGBAUM and CATHARINA GARMAN. JOHN GEORGE married CATHERINE SHUTT, in 1810 at Centre Co., Pa.
