THE KRIEGBAUM HERITAGE NEWSLETTER

Secretary: Mrs. David Forbis, Holliday, MO 65258

Editors: Mrs. William James and Mrs. H. E. Krigbaum
For those of you who are wondering about the spelling of the name KRIEGBAUM
and who believe that KRIGBAUM is not related - my grandfather's name was originally KRIEGBAUM but
so many persons left out the "e" when addressing him that he finally dropped
the letter also. I have found the same name spelled various ways in listing
the same person. However, the zaniest of all was that used by some of my
grandfather's correspondents: the name of CREEKBOTTOM.
It might help to know, if you do not know already, that KRIEG means - war [remember
blitzkrieg in World War II?] and BAUM means - tree [as in the song O Tannebaum - O
Christmas Tree]. KRICHBAUM and KRIECHBAUM mean - Dweller near the wild plum tree.
KIRSCHEBAUM - cherry tree or a dweller at, or near a cherry tree. KIRCHE -
church. However, in the early days many misspellings occurred and German
Script was used then in Germany. Many immigrants could spell only in script
and the passenger lists showed only facsimile signatures by persons who found
the writing of the German
Page 2
names quite difficult as it was hard to decipher the guttural German
pronunciation. Hence, KRICHBAUM might really be KRIEGBAUM and vice-
versa. For instance, you will note in the January Newsletter the name of
CONRAD KRICHBAUM. I believe him to be my ancestor in spite of the spelling
because I found the same person several times but spelled differently; also
spelled KRIEGBAUM. So do not worry if you name doesn't agree. You
possibly belong to us anyway.
For those of you who are not ancestor-hunting and just like to have fun with
us at the Reunion, come anyway and if you can give us what information you
have on your own families we shall appreciate it so that we may endeavor to
see if it connects up with ours. You can help us a great deal if you would
do so.

LETTERS:
Dear Mrs. James,
Thank you so much for sending information on THE KRIGBAUM HERITAGE.
My husband, KERMIT, is now 70 years old, and the last of his generation, as we
have no children. He was adopted by his grand-parents GEORGE and SARAH CREAKBAUM, originally
spelled CREAKBAUGHM. There were born to GEORGE and SARAH three sons and
three girls, namely, CLAYTON, JAMES, MERRITT, LAURA and twin sisters,
ELLA and DELLA. KERMIT was born by DELLA. She and her husband were
divorced when KERMIT was very young. She took back her maiden name and the
grandparents adopted him as their legal son. CLAYTON was born Oct. 5, 1881
and died in Reno, Nevada in 1944 at the age of 63. JIM was born Nov. 15,
1888, died in Milwaukee, Wisc. in 1961, age 73. MERRITT was born Sept. 23,
1897, died in Los Angeles, Calif. in 1947, age 49. ELLA was born Aug. 24,
1886, died in 1941, age 55. DELLA was born Aug. 24, 1886, died in 1965, age
79. LAURA was born Jan. 29, 1877, died in 1956, age 79.
DANIEL CREAKBAUGHM, his wife whose maiden name was Mary Ann LONG, bore six
children. GEORGE (who was KERMIT's grandfather), JOE, HENRY, SUSAN,
LYDIA and SARAH.
I found in our files a worn and torn paper which reads "Application For
Membership" of a camp [no names mentioned] which says DANIEL CREAKBAUM was
born in the State of Indiana [no city name] was 68 years old Feb. 6, at the
time he filled out this application. Enlisted in Jaysville, Ohio, 1864 in
Co. 1-152 Regiment-State Volunteers. Was discharged at camp on Denison,
Sept. 1864 by reason term expired. This doesn't tell the name of the camp or
any further information.
Getting back to GEORGE and SARAH, they spent most of their years in Arcanum,
Ansonia and their last years in Versailles, Ohio. Both of them passed away
in 1932.
There is a small cemetery called "Creakbaum" located somewhere west and close
to Greenville, Ohio.
My husband KERMIT, had a stroke July 14, 1975, which as left him with a
speech problem and I doubt that he could give me any further information.
Thank you so very much for sending us the announcement of the coming reunion.
However, because of the health reasons, we will be unable to attend.
This letter was written for my husband.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kermit CREAKBAUM

We also had a letter from Mr. THOMAS KREACHBAUM, of Columbus, Ohio, who sent
in his membership dues and stated that he had in his possession the Bible
belonging to JOHANNES KRICHBAUM which was brought to this country from
Germany. THOMAS, I had planned to put your letter in this issue but have
misplaced the copy my sister Jean sent me. Will put it in next issue. Would
love to hear more from you.

The following letter was sent to our Treasurer, Jean KRIGBAUM:
Hi Jean,
Guess we are related somewhere along the line because I am THERESA
[Krigbaum] HAGGART, daughter of SAMUEL MOSES and Dortha [Burgett] KRIGBAUM.
I am a cousin to Carol KRIGBAUM's husband in Quincy, Ill. I enjoyed the "Krigbaum Heritage"
edition very much and realize that someone has put many hours of research on this project.
Thanks to all of you for the fine job you have been doing. One little item I might pass on to
you - that is the matter of which RONALD KRIGBAUM paid the dues at the renunion.
My nephew, RONALD KRIGBAUM, of 10424 Prince Drive, St. Louis, Missouri.
Thanks again for the work you are doing.
Sincerely,
Theresa Bell Krigbaum Haggart

Note: We have received many letters from many KRIGBAUM " detectives." Keep
up the good work, Gang, and send us all the information you can. More letters
next issue.

during the War of the Revolution:
John WILHELM KRICHBAUM, born Berks Co., Penna., 10-10-1754, served as private
to WILLIAM KRIEGHBAUM in Captain Casper Stover's Company, "The Third
Company, Second Battalion" Lancaster County, Militia, during the American

NOTE BY NANCY PECHE:
The above I believe to be incorrect. WILLIAM KRICHBAUM was not the "second

Johannes ADAM KRICHBAUM, the immigrant, had two sons:
1. JOHN PETER, b. 1758 and
2. JOHN ADAM , Jr. b. 1762.
