BARTLIN GLATT

BARTLIN GLATT was born January 23, 1834 in Baden-Baden Germany and died March 20, 1914 in Eureka, Humboldt County, California.

"Bartlin was a colorful and prominent pioneer of California. He walked behind a covered wagon with a party of seven from
St. Louis, Missouri. He came looking for gold. When he first came from Germany in 1849 he stopped off and learned the butcher business with his uncle.

In 1852 he came to California stopping off at Sacramento and worked on the levee to acquire a stake to go into the mines. For 15 years he followed mining with good success."

"He (Bartlin) worked three more years in the mines and then went to Humboldt County where he invested in real estate. He prospered. He invested in the southern part of Eureka. His holdings became known as the "Glatt Additions". From part of this, the beautiful Sequoia Park was carved. He urged Mayor Kinsey to take in exchange the first twenty acres of his beautiful virgin timber for some of the city's muncipal property. He accepted one block in exchange. This was in 1893. Later he sold 20 acres more for $1300. Not a gift, but at sacrifice so that later a plaque bearing his name was put up at the zoo entrance. His grandson James and wife Alma, great-grandson Roy and wife Helen, and great-great grandson James Carl, all attended this dedication."
