CHARLIE JACOBSON

CHARLIE JACOBSON was born March 20, 1869 in Värmland, Sweden and died July 14, 1934 in Calmar, Alberta, Canada.
The most current information I have, and it is not yet proven, but Charlie Jacobson was of German descent born in Sweden and was adopted. This was told to a niece by my grandfather, Carl Edwin Jacobson.

The most current information I have on Charlie is he immigrated to the United States in 1891, per the 1900 U.S. Census, married his wife Fredrika "Freda" Albertina Sandberg in Wichita Falls, Texas. Again, not proven, it is said that Charlie was a Texas Ranger.

FREDA SANDBERG

FREDRIKA "FREDA" ALBERTINA SANDBERG was born April 03, 1874 in Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden and died July 31, 1936 in Calmar, Alberta, Canada.

Her parents were Erik Nilsson Sandberg, born July 18, 1833 in Brattfors, Värmland, Sweden and died about 1895 in Dundee, Archer, Texas. Erik and his son Victor, were in Texas to find a better life for their family when Victor succumbed to yellow fever and shortly thereafter, Erik died, about 1895 in Dundee, Archer County, Texas.

Her mother, Anna Maria Johansdotter was born October 28, 1835 in Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden to Nils Ericsson (March 23, 1804, Brattfors, Värmland, Sweden) and Maria Jonsdotter. Anna Maria died July 16, 1918 in Highland Park, Alberta, Canada. Freda's father, Erik, immigrated to the U.S. in 1879 and his family followed in 1881.

Freda had ten siblings, all born in Sweden:

Carl Johan born February 13, 1855 in Brattfors, Värmland, Sweden, died 1892 in Sweden.
Maja "Mary" Helena born March 29, 1857 in Färnebo, Värmland, Sweden and died March 25, 1909 in Canova, Miner County, South Dakota. Maja married Lars "Louis" Nohlgren, December 2, 1877 in Värmland, Sweden. Lars was born May 14, 1852 in Klokkare Bolet, Finnerödja, Skaraborg, Sweden and died in 1907, Canova, Miner County, South Dakota.
Anna "Hannah" Sofia born December 5, 1859 in Färnebo, Värmland, Sweden and died May 8, 1920 in New Norway, Camrose, Alberta, Canada. Anna married John Nordlund on March 22, 1884 in Miner County, South Dakota. John was born January 5, 1855 in Sweden and died February 27, 1920 in Canada. Together they had 10 children.
Jonas Erik born September 18, 1861 in Mortenberg, Färnebo, Värmland, Sweden and died 1919 in Sweden. Jonas married (wife's name unknown) and together had 5 children (that I can find).
Selma Katrina born December 18, 1863 in Persberget, Färnebo, Värmland, Sweden and died March 28, 1941 in Rutland, South Dakota. Selma married Gustaf Sabel on January 4, 1884 in Howard, Miner County, South Dakota. Gustaf was born February 29, 1860 in Skeby, Skaraborgs Län, Sweden and died December 21, 1941 in Canova, Miner County, South Dakota. Together they had 5 children.
Victor born March 21, 1866 in Färnebo, Värmland, Sweden and died before 1895 in Dundee, Archer, Texas. Victor died of yellow fever when he and his father decided to leave South Dakota and try their luck in Texas.
Elin "Ella" Mathilda born April 3, 1874 in Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden and died February 1, 1933 in Mayfield, Graves County, Kentucky. Elin married Thomas L. McGraw, born in 1838, New York, New York.
Klara Erika born August 12, 1877 in Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden and died July 30, 1910 in Kalispell, Montana. Klara married John Collins on July 13, 1904. John was born in Pennsylvania and died May 13, 1904. Together they had 1 child, that I can find.
Signe Elvira born January 27, 1880 in Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden and died January 23, 1935 in New Norway, Camrose, Alberta, Canada. Signe married Alfred Hanson.

MARRIED LIFE

Charlie married Freda in Wichita Falls, Texas in between 1896 and 1897.

Charlie and Freda moved from Texas to Iowa and had one child, Julia. They then moved to the Township of Manyaska-Sherburne Village, Martin County, Minnesota and had two more children, Ernest and Carl, in 1899 and 1901. The 1900 U.S. Census has Charles, Freda, Julia, Earnest (misspelled) and Freda's sister Clara residing in Sherburne Village, Martin County, Minnesota. In 1900, the ages on the census show Charles as 29 years, Freda 26 years, Julia 3 years, Earnest 5/12 years (5 months), and Clara 22 years, plus 2 lodgers. The two lodgers were C.F. Hanson, a dentist and John P. Magna, a cigar maker. Clara Sandberg's occupation was dressmaker, Charlie's occupation was a drayman. No occupation was listed for Freda, but I'm sure it would have been housewife and mother!

Possibly because of the offer from the Canadian government of affordable land, they settled in Calmar, Alberta Canada between 1902 and 1903 making it their home until their deaths.
From Helen Leona Jacobson Leamey's memory: Charlie and his brothers were farm hands in Calmar, Alberta, Canada. They occupied each corner of the property with their own homes and families, however, the owner occupied one corner of the property for his family. The family who owned the land was Lundblad. The Lundblad's daughter Annie married the Jacobson's son, Ernest.

My mother, Helen Leona Jacobson Leamey traveled with her parents to Calmar to visit her grandmother, Freda. By then Charlie had died. ItLeft to right: Helen Leona, grandmother Freda, mother Grace and sister Anita Louise (boy unknown). Circa July 1936 was the first time in Helen's life that everyone "paid attention to her, as she was Carl's daughter." Her sister, Anita Louise, always attractive, was the one people paid attention to. Upon departing her grandmother's home, Helen started crying, not wanting to leave, as she loved being there. Freda had died as Helen and her parents and sister were enroute back home, and had to turn around and head back to Calmar to attend the funeral.

Charlie and Freda Jacobson are buried in the Calmar Cemetery, Calmar, Alberta, Canada along with Walter H. Jacobson (son), who was born in 1908 and died in 1967. He was placed between each parent, Plot #4,05.
Another wonderful person answered a query posted in a Calmar Genealogy site and were kind enough to look up Carl and Freda's headstones and took pictures for me. This is an excerpt of their note to me:

"The Calmar cemetery is two or three miles west of town and the Jacobson markers are located in the southeast corner. Three identical graves with a small marker for Uncle Walter (1908-1967) sandwiched in between what I take to be his mother and father. The three 1930s stones are badly eroded and quite hard to read. I double checked the 1869 dates as it not fit your note." The 1900 lists Charlie's birth date as being 1871 whereas the headstone reads 1869.
Each headstone reads:
EACH DUTY DONE THEY REST IN PEACE EACH DUTY DONE THEY REST IN PEACE CHARLIE JACOBSON FREDA JACOBSON BORN IN SWEDEN MARCH 20, 1869 BORN IN SWEDEN APRIL 3, 1874 DIED JULY 14, 1934 DIED JULY 31, 1936
There are three stucco gravetops, one for Charlie and one for Freda. Just above the three gravetops is a granite marker which is Walter's. Who the third stucco gravetop belongs to is unknown. Possibly Leon's?
