INDEX TO SURNAMES The Daviess County Democrat Vol. 17, No. 9. Saturday, January 19, 1884 ****************************************************************************** THIS FILE IS THE PROPERTY OF KELLY J. OLIVER, ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL. ALTHOUGH THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS FILE IS PUBLIC AND NOT UNDER COPYRIGHT, THE PRESENTATION OF THIS INDEX IN THIS FORMAT REPRESENTS MANY HOURS OF TIME AND EFFORT PLUS PERSONAL EXPENSE. YOU MAY NOT REPRODUCE, FOR PROFIT OR OTHERWISE, ANY PORTION OF THIS FILE WITHOUT PERMISSION. FOR PERMISSION TO REPRINT SMALL SECTIONS, WRITE TO KELJEANNE@AOL.COM. You may NOT copy this index and put it on your web site or in any books or publications. You MAY, however, link to this page from your web site. If you don't know how to do that, ask me. Do a "Search in Page" in your browser to find the name you're looking for. Try searching by only last name at first. For example, Francis A. Ward is listed as Francis A. Ward, F. A. Ward, and Sheriff Ward. You'll find all of those listings if you search only for "Ward." Also, first names are often abbreviated (I left the abbreviations as they are in the newspaper) -- Wm for William, Geo for George, etc. First names are also often reduced to initials. If you find someone (or several people) you're looking for, I encourage you to read /The Daviess County Democrat/ for the entire story. These old newspapers are treasures. /The Daviess County Democrat/ is available on microfilm in the Carnegie Library in Washington, IN, and in the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis, IN. I also own the microfilm. If you don't live near Indiana, write to me (at keljeanne@aol.com), and I'll tell you what one article says. I'll even send you a photocopy of the newspaper article if you ask really nicely. TELL ME THE DATE, NAME OF THE PERSON, NAME OF THE ARTICLE, AND PAGE NUMBER. If you leave out any of that information, I won't be able to find what you're looking for. Please write to me (keljeanne@aol.com) if you have any questions. Thanks! ***************************************************************************** The Daviess County Democrat Vol. 17, No. 9. Mr. Lavelle's statement at the end of the article alerts the public that the listed properties would be sold in February 1884 because the owners had not paid taxes for the properties for 1882 or 1883. I may be reading this wrong, but I believe some of them might have been delinquent for even more years. In order to not have their land sold, people could pay the tax, penalty, and interest before the second Monday in February, 1884. ******** If you see your relative's name on this list, don't despair! It doesn't mean he or she was ready for the poorhouse or anything. I noticed there is a physician and a lawyer on this list, in addition to some other men with political clout. Make sure to look at the newspaper -- it gives info on how many acres the person had or which lot number they had. It also tells the value of the property and how much it was taxed. ******** "ADDITIONAL TO COUNTY TREASURER'S SALE. CONTINUED FROM SECOND PAGE." "TOWN OF MONTGOMERY" Montgomery V. B. Real Estate Agent This is a highly entertaining essay written by Mr. Leslie in reply to the advertisement taken out by Mr. Williams the week prior. If you're related to Jim Williams, you might not want to read what Mr. Leslie has to say about him. But if you're related to Alex Leslie, you should definitely read this essay. It shows Mr. Leslie as an intelligent, witty, and bold man. It's really wonderful to be able to read his first-person account of the dispute, slanted though it may be. "ACCIDENTS" Wynn Josh Was riding on horseback along Main street on Friday night. His steed slipped and fell upon one of Josh's feet, spraining and bruising his ankle severely. Boland Patrick of Cannelburg, a railroader for several years past, wanted to do warmer work. So last Monday he set in to work in teh mines of the Buckeye Company at Cannelburg. He had been at work only a few hours when he was caught by a falling slate and very severely injured. He will be laid up for a good while and perhaps be a cripple for life. He is unmarried. Young Frank A single man about 35, came here from the east to discover the murderer of his father, who was killed about 20 years ago and his body found in the ice in Prairie Creek at Lettsville, met with a serious accident while at work at Frank Zinkan's sawmill, four miles east of this city, last Wednesday. He had been employed as a sawyer for several months at the mill, and at the time of the accient was sitting in front of and filing the saw, a large circular one. An ox-team was at work at the mill also and in moving about the machinery one of the oxen struck and moved a rod that suddenly let on steam and set the engine and machinery in motion, and Mr. Young had a large piece of flesh torn from one of his thighs. He was brought to this city and is at the boarding house of Mr. John H. Akers. Dr. E. L. Dagley is attending him. He is a member of Garber Post no. 72, G. A. R.
