You may NOT copy this index and put it on your web site or in any books or publications. You MAY, however, link to this page from your web site. If you don't know how to do that, ask me. Do a "Search in Page" in your browser to find the name you're looking for. Try searching by only last name at first. For example, Francis A. Ward is listed as Francis A. Ward, F. A. Ward, and Sheriff Ward. You'll find all of those listings if you search only for "Ward." Also, first names are often abbreviated (I left the abbreviations as they are in the newspaper) -- Wm for William, Geo for George, etc. First names are also often reduced to initials. If you find someone (or several people) you're looking for, I encourage you to read /The Daviess County Democrat/ for the entire story. These old newspapers are treasures. /The Daviess County Democrat/ is available on microfilm in the Carnegie Library in Washington, IN, and in the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis, IN. I also own the microfilm. If you don't live near Indiana, write to me (at keljeanne@aol.com), and I'll tell you what one article says. I'll even send you a photocopy of the newspaper article if you ask really nicely. TELL ME THE DATE, NAME OF THE PERSON, NAME OF THE ARTICLE, AND PAGE NUMBER. If you leave out any of that information, I won't be able to find what you're looking for. Please write to me (keljeanne@aol.com) if you have any questions. "RUEFUL REPUBLICANS" This is an article about the meeting the Republicans had last Tuesday to elect a nominee for mayor. The Democrat writer likens the meeting to a funeral throughout the story, and muses that the Democrats who did attend the meeting did so "partly out of curiosity, partly from sympathy for the unlucky nominee and partly to be on hand to serve as pallbearers in case their services should be needed." During the year 1859 there was a gerat outcry in many parts of this county, relative to the escape of negro slaves from Kentucky and other states, in violation of the fugitive slave law, by means of what was then termed the "underground railroad" and professed hunters of these escaped slaves were often seen in Washington, but were not molested; however, much, if to any great extent all, there was sympathy for the "underground movement;" or, beyond a few persons on the line. It was said that Mr. Peter Stephenson, of Veale township, was an agent, and that he had assisted many a colored man on his road to Canada. Whether this was true or not, he was much annoyed by the nightly surveilance of men who watched about his premises, as if he were a suspected felon, good citizen as he was. "A BRAVADO" There came to Washington, in the month of September, '59, one of these professed negro hunters, giving his name as Phillips. His conduct became so obnoxious that many people, of each political party, appealed to the writer of this to expose him to the public through the columns of the Telegraph, for Democrats and all felt outraged at his insolent conduct. The request of citizens was complied with, and the self-styled negro hunter was handled without gloves. Of course he was wroth. The Telegraph office was then in a small frame back of Van Trees' corner, on 4th, between Main and Van Trees streets, and immediately north, Mr. Henry Wise had a livery stable. Sheriff Benj. Goodwin was in the editorial room settling for some sheriff's advertisements, and ordering more, when in rushed Phillips, the negro hunter, with a great burly companion, both frenzied with wrath, one holding a revolver and the other a raw-hide in hand, but concealed beneath their clothing, and each demanding a retraction of what the paper had said concerning Phillips. The Sheriff, taking in the situation, and divining their purpose, took from his saddle-bags, and cocking it, placed a revolver in the editor's hand, who at once arose and firmly refused any retraction whatever. At this juncture Mr. Henry Wise entered the room, in a correspondingly towering passion, saying: "That rascal has come to cow-hide you. I'll put this one out; you kick that dog out," pointing to Phillips. Suiting action to the words, Mr. Wise grabbed the big fellow and "ye editor" followed suit, "possessing" the negro hunter by the nape of the neck, and at the mouth of Sheriff Goodwin's revolver, marched him out into fresh air, and without the use of a single "cuss word," either. It is trying on an editor's patience to be thus annoyed during business hours, but all positive men who are fearless "to tell the truth and shame the devil," will find the road anything but a bed of roses. The Sheriff, Mr. Goodwin, using the only approximate "cuss word" he was ever known to employ, remarked, "By Jorum! that was neatly done. See, I had another shooting iron in reserve." Mr. G. and the editor shook hands, buried the political hatchet there, and the Telegraph became a "Goodwin man" as long as he had Sheriff's advertisements to give, and revolvers to lend in time of need. How natural; nothing small about that. "HIGH SCHOOL" From the beginning of the writer's management of the /Telegraph/ it had earnestly advocated the erection of a suitable building in which a high school in connection with the common branches taught, where more advanced shcholars might be instructed in higher branches without the expense of sending them abroad. Accordingly, on the 27th of October, 1859, a meeting was held for the purpose of organizing with that view at the court house, of which Colonel John Van Trees was president, and James H. McConnell secretary. It was attended by many of our citizens, the chief actors of participants in the meeting being the gentlemen aboved named, and Captain Charles Childs, S. A. Rodarmel, R. A. Clements, Sr., Wm. Helphenstine, Elisha Hyatt, and Dr. Harvey Wolfe. The amount of $2,000 was subscribed then and there, but the matter was not pushed with rapidity, and in the fast approaching political contest the enthusiasm died out and the plans which were well laid were ultimately entirely abandoned. It is not improper to set down here that the gentlemen above named, together with many others, used every effort at times before to accomplish the purpose named, but there was always a lack of full co-operation or "a long pull, a strong pull, and a pull all together." Edmundson George "Last Wednesday George Edmundson, who resides on Sandhill was driving a team belonging to his father, along Walnut street, in front of the Court House, when one of the animals fell from exhaustion, caused evidently from starvation, and was unable to rise. The heartless driver left the horse lying there until the next day when it died of cold and exposure. Meantime, however, some ladies carried it some food of which it partook voraciously, showing plainly that lack of something to eat was all that ailed the poor brute up to that time. On Thursday morning an information was filed in the Circuit Court and a bench warrant was issued for Edmundson's arrest. Sheriff Ward arrested him and took him before Judge Malott who fined him $5 for cruelty to animals. The young man cried and Mr. John C. Billheimer generously paid his fine and the officers threw off their costs and Edmundson was set free with the admonition to be careful not to act so cruelly any more." *****I included the whole story because this young man who did not treat his father's horse very well was my great-great-grandfather's brother. I hate to see my family so poorly represented in the newspaper, but it's the truth of the matter.******* Ward Sheriff (mentioned in the Edmundson story) Malott Judge (mentioned in the Edmundson story) Billheimer John C.
