William
Jones was the son of unknown parents. He was born about 1796 in England
or Virginia. William was married twice, to Jane & Matilda.
Jane was born
between 1794-1800 in England or Virginia. She was the daughter of unknown parents.
Her last name was possibly Rhodes.
Matilda was the daughter of unknown
parents.
THE FAMILY OF WILLIAM JONES & JANE
| William Jones & Jane | William Jones & Jane
were married about 1815, probably in VA. There is a marriage record for a
William Jones to a Jane Rhodes on March 14, 1815 in Montgomery Co., VA that may
be this couple. There are also online family trees that list an 1815 Grayson Co,
Virginia marriage of William Jones to Jane Sturgill that may be this couple. William
& Jane had at least 5 children. The family is listed on the 1820 & 1830
censuses of Grayson Co., VA. They moved sometime between 1830 to 1838 from Virginia
to Ohio. Their youngest child was born on March 20, 1838 in Ohio, and their daughter
Elizabeth married in Lawrence Co., OH on December 6, 1838. The households of William
Jones & oldest son John Jones are listed together on the 1840 census of Lymins,
Lawrence Co., Ohio. Jane Jones died on Aug. 14, 1848, probably in Lawrence
Co., Ohio. Warren Reed's book states that she is buried in Gage Co., NE, but
I have not found documentation that they were in Nebraska that early. (Also Nebraska
only became an official territory on May 30, 1854, and then a State on March 1,
1867.) Warren's book also states that William remarried Matilda in 1849.
William is listed on the 1850 census of Symms Twp, Lawrence Co., OH , living with
his son Martin & Evalina (Jones) Thompson & family, and his younger son
Isaac. There is no wife listed with him at that time, so either I have the wrong
date for his marriage to Matilda or for some reason she was not living with William
in 1850. William moved sometime between 1850-1858 from Ohio to Nebraska, possibly
with son Samuel who moved from Ohio to Kansas about 1855 and was in Nebraska by
1858. Matilda died on July 25, 1858 in Gage Co., NE and she is buried in the Jones
homestead cemetery. William Jones died on September 08, 1859 in Gage Co., NE.
Samuel Jones is listed with his family on the 1860 census of Beatrice, Gage Co.,
Nebraska Territory, with his widowed sister Elizabeth also in his household. Another
married child of William & Jane who settled in Beatrice Gage Co., NE in 1866
was Evalina Jones Thompson. |
The children of William Jones & Jane:
| Elizabeth Jones | Elizabeth Jones was born June 11, 1816
in Virginia. There is a female the right age group to be Elizabeth, age 4,
in the household of William Jones on the 1820 census of Grayson Co., VA. There
is not a female in William Jones' household on the 1830 census of Grayson Co.,
VA that is the right age to be Elizabeth (age 14), but there are 2 females in
the age 5-10 group - one is Evalina, age 8, but I don't know who the other one
is and it may be Elizabeth with census taker error for age. Her parents moved
with their family sometime between 1830 to 1838 from Virginia to Ohio. Elizabeth
married Foster McDaniel on December 6, 1838 in Lawrence Co., OH. The household
of Foster McDaniel is listed on the 1840 census of Walnut, Gallia Co., OH. Foster
died on August 11, 1846 in Walnut, Gallia Co., OH. I have not found Elizabeth
on 1850 census at this time, but I also have not found her brother Samuel, who
she is living with in 1860. Elizabeth moved from Ohio to Nebraska sometime between
1846-1860; she probably traveled with her brother Samuel's family, who were in
Ohio until 1855, in Kansas in 1857, and in Nebraska by 1858. She is listed as
Elizabeth McDaniel, age 43, in the household of her brother Samuel Jones on the
1860 census of Beatrice, Gage Co., Nebraska Territory. Elizabeth Jones
McDaniel died on January 8, 1865 in Gage Co., Nebraska. Notes for Elizabeth Jones McDaniel
| John Jones | John Jones was born about 1820 in Grayson Co.,
VA. There is a male the right age to be him on the 1820 (age baby) & 1830
(age 9) censuses in the household of William Jones, both in Grayson, VA. His parents
moved between 1830 to 1838 from Virginia to Ohio. John is listed as head of household
on the 1840 census of Lymins, Lawrence Co., Ohio, living next to the household
of his parents. At that time he was age 20, and had a wife in the household age
15-19. I have not found him on the 1850 census at this time. John Jones died
sometime after 1840, but I don't know exactly when or where.
| Evalina Jones | Evalina Jones was born on August 17,
1822 in Grayson Co., VA. There is a female the right age to be Evalina, age
8, in the household of William Jones on the 1830 census of Grayson Co., VA. Her
parents moved with their family sometime between 1830 to 1838 from Virginia to
Ohio. There is a female the right age group to be Evalina, age 18, in the household
of William Jones on the 1840 census of Lymins, Lawrence Co., OH. Evalina married
Martin William Thompson on August 10, 1843 in Lawrence Co., OH and they
had 10 children. The family is listed on the 1850 census Symms Twp, Lawrence Co.,
OH. Based on birth places of their children, they lived in Ohio until about 1854
when they began a series of moves. They had a child in Missouri in 1855 and a
child in Texas in 1859. They are listed on the 1860 census of Easton Twp., Leavenworth,
KS, and they had a child in Kansas in 1863. They settled in Nebraska by 1866,
and they are listed on the 1870 & 1880 censuses of Beatrice, Gage Co., NE.
Martin William Thompson died on April 30, 1892 in Leadville, Lake Colorado. He
was shot while participating in the Colorado gold rush. His body was returned
to Nebraska for burial. Evalina Jones Thompson died on April 17, 1894 in Gage
Co., NE. They are both buried in the Dolan Cemetery, Gage Co., NE. The Family of Martin William Thompson & Evalina Jones Notes for Evalina Jones Thompson
| Samuel Jones | Samuel Isaac Jones was born about May 27, 1825 in
Grayson Co., VA. There is a male the right age group to be Samuel, age 5,
in the household of William Jones on the 1830 census of Graysoon Co., VA. His
parents moved with their family sometime between 1830 to 1838 from Virginia to
Ohio. There is a male the right age group to be Samuel, age 15, in the household
of William Jones on the 1840 census of Lymins, Lawrence Co., OH. Samuel married
Rebecca Pethoud on Dec 18, 1845 in Lawrence Co., OH and they had 14 children.
According to birth dates of their children, the family lived in Lawrence &
Gallia Co., OH until about 1855 when they moved to Kansas. They had a child born
in Kansas in 1857, but then moved to Nebraska about 1858. They had a child born
in Nebraska in October of 1859, and they are listed on the 1860 & 1870 censuses
of Beatrice, Gage Co., NE. Samuel Jones died on February 08, 1872 in Gage Co.,
NE. He is buried in the Jones homestead cemetery NE 1/4 Sec 15, Midland Township,
Gage County, Neb. After Samuel's death Rebecca moved to Gooding, Idaho to live
with her children. She died on December 22, 1900 in Gooding Co., OH at the home
of her daughter Libby (Elizabeth) Dwyer, and she is buried there. The Family of Samuel Isaac Jones & Rebecca Pethoud Notes for Samuel Isaac Jones
| Isaac H. Jones | Isaac Hendron Jones was born March
20, 1838 in Ohio. Birthdate is from his obituary, which does not name his
parents. For unexplained reasons, there are no males under age 15 listed
in the household of William Jones on the 1840 census of Lymins, Lawrence Co.,
OH, although there is an unidentifed male age 15-19 in addition to Samuel, age
15. Isaac is listed in several documents later as being an uncle of the daughters
of Evalina Jones Thompson, so that would mean that he was Evalina's brother, and
that there was census taker error in 1840 in listing how old William's two sons
were at that time. Another possibility would be that he was the son of someone
else, and that William & Jane raised him as their son. I had wondered if he
was actually a grandson, (son of John Jones who may have died by 1850), but John
does not have any children listed in his household in 1840 either. Isaac was 13
years younger than the other children of William & Jane Jones. Jane died on
August 14, 1848 when Isaac was age 10. Isaac is listed at age 12 with William
Jones on the1850 census Symms Twp, Lawrence Co., OH; both are listed in the household
of Martin & Evalina (Jones) Thompson. Isaac's obituary states: "He came
to Gage county, Nebraska, in 1856 and for a time was a pony express rider and
freighter from Nebraska City west. He was at Pike's Peak as early as 1860 and
for many years preceeding his death he was a prospector and miner in Idaho and
Montana. He never married and has spent all his life on the frontier in advance
of civilization." I have not found Isaac on the 1860 or 1870 censuses at
this time. He is listed at age 42 on the 1880 census of Los Pinos Canyon, Conejos
Co., Colorado. At that time his occupation is given as Laborer on Railroad Grade.
Isaac is listed at age 62 on the 1900 census of Thompson Twp, Missoula Co., MT.
His occupation at that time was Miner of Ores. An article published in the DeWitt
(Nebraska) Times-News on 8 Oct 8, 1908 states: "Isaac Jones of Montana visited
here this week with his neices, Mrs Pluma Rossiter and Mrs. Joyce. Mr Jones was
one of the earliest settlers of Nebraska. Away back in 1858 and 1859 he rode for
the Pony Express which operated between St. Joe and San Francisco. Mr. Jones's
route being from Marysvllle, Kansas to Fort Kearney (Nebraska). He is remembered
by such old settlers as John Barrett, Robert Nicholas and Frank Baker. His relatives
had not heard from him for twenty six years." I have not found Isaac on the
1910 census at this time. Isaac Hendron Jones died on May 23, 1913 in DeWitt,
Saline Co., NE at the home of John Minor Joyce. He is buried near the John
Minor and Amanda (Thompson) Joyce family plot, in the Oak Grove Cemetery, DeWitt,
Neb. There is another Isaac H. Jones, born about 1822 in Virginia, who also
lived in Nebraska (Richardson Co). I don 't know if there is any relation between
the two Isaacs. Notes for Isaac Hendron Jones |
Jane died in 1848 and William Jones remarried Matilda in 1849. They did not have any children. Matilda died on July 25, 1858 in Gage Co., NE and she is buried in the Jones homestead cemetery. William Jones died on September 08, 1859 in Gage Co., NE.
