Matilda McDaniel was the daughter of unknown parents. She was married first to William T. Chick, who died in 1851 in Gallia Co., Ohio.

THE FAMILY OF WILLIAM JONES & JANE

William Jones & Jane Unknown

William Jones & Jane were married about 1815, probably in Virginia. There is a marriage record for a William Jones to a Jane Rhodes on March 14, 1815 in Montgomery Co., Virginia that may be this couple. There are also online family trees that list an 1815 Grayson Co, Virginia marriage of William Jones to Jane Sturgill, but Jane Sturgill died in North Carolina so it is probably not wife of this William Jones. William & Jane had at least 5 children. The family is listed on the 1820 & 1830 censuses of Grayson Co., Virginia. They moved sometime between 1830 to 1838 from Virginia to Ohio. Their youngest child was born on March 20, 1838 in Ohio, and their daughter Elizabeth married in Lawrence Co., Ohio on December 6, 1838. The households of William Jones & oldest son John Jones are listed together on the 1840 census of Lymins, Lawrence Co., Ohio. Jane Jones died on Aug. 14, 1848, probably in Lawrence Co., Ohio. Warren Reed's book states that she is buried in Gage Co., NE, but I have not found documentation that they were in Nebraska that early. (Also Nebraska only became an official territory on May 30, 1854, and then a State on March 1, 1867.) William is listed on the 1850 census of Symms Twp, Lawrence Co., OH , living with Martin & Evalina (Jones) Thompson & family, and his youngest son Isaac. William was married to Matilda McDaniel Chick about 1852 in Gallia Co., Ohio. Matilda's first husband William T. Chick died February 28, 1851, so the marriage was after that. Matilda died on July 25, 1858 in Gallia Co., Ohio and she is buried with her first husband William Chick in the Sandfork Cemetery, Walnut Twp, Gallia, Ohio. William moved about 1858, probably after Matilda's death, from Ohio to Nebraska, probably to join son Samuel who moved from Ohio to Kansas about 1855 and was in Nebraska by 1858. William Jones died on September 08, 1859 in Gage Co., Nebraska. He is buried in the Austin Creek Cemetery, Midland Twp, Beatrice, Gage Co., Nebraska. Samuel Jones is listed with his family on the 1860 census of Beatrice, Gage Co., Nebraska Territory, with his widowed sister Elizabeth also in his household. Another married child of William & Jane who settled in Beatrice Gage Co., Nebraska in 1866 was Evalina Jones Thompson.

The children of William Jones & Jane:

Elizabeth JonesElizabeth Jones was born June 11, 1816 in Virginia. There is a female the right age group to be Elizabeth, age 4, in the household of William Jones on the 1820 census of Grayson Co., Virginia. There is not a female in William Jones' household on the 1830 census of Grayson Co., VA that is the right age to be Elizabeth (age 14), but there are 2 females in the age 5-10 group - one is Evalina, age 8, but I don't know who the other one is and it may be Elizabeth with census taker error for age. Her parents moved with their family sometime between 1830 to 1838 from Virginia to Ohio. Elizabeth married Foster McDaniel on December 6, 1838 in Lawrence Co., OH. The household of Foster McDaniel is listed on the 1840 census of Walnut, Gallia Co., Ohio. Foster died on August 11, 1846 in Walnut, Gallia Co., Ohio. I have not found Elizabeth on 1850 census at this time, but I also have not found her brother Samuel, who she is living with in 1860. Elizabeth moved from Ohio to Nebraska sometime between 1846-1860; she probably traveled with her brother Samuel's family, who were in Ohio until 1855, in Kansas in 1857, and in Nebraska by 1858. She is listed as Elizabeth McDaniel, age 43, in the household of her brother Samuel Jones on the 1860 census of Beatrice, Gage Co., Nebraska Territory. Elizabeth Jones McDaniel died on January 8, 1865 in Gage Co., Nebraska. She is buried in the Austin Creek Cemetery, Midland Twp, Beatrice, Gage, Nebraska.

Notes for Samuel Isaac Jones
Isaac H. JonesIsaac Hendron Jones was born March 20, 1838 in Ohio. Birthdate is from his obituary, which does not name his parents. For unexplained reasons, there are no males under age 15 listed in the household of William Jones on the 1840 census of Lymins, Lawrence Co., Ohio, although there is an unidentifed male age 15-19 in addition to Samuel, age 15. Isaac is listed in several documents later as being an uncle of the daughters of Evalina Jones Thompson, so that would mean that he was Evalina's brother, and that there was census taker error in 1840 in listing how old William's two sons were at that time. Another possibility would be that he was the son of someone else, and that William & Jane raised him as their son. Isaac was 13 years younger than the other children of William & Jane Jones. Jane died on August 14, 1848 when Isaac was age 10. Isaac is listed at age 12 with William Jones on the1850 census Symms Twp, Lawrence Co., Ohio; both are listed in the household of Martin & Evalina (Jones) Thompson. Isaac's obituary states: "He came to Gage county, Nebraska, in 1856 and for a time was a pony express rider and freighter from Nebraska City west. He was at Pike's Peak as early as 1860 and for many years preceeding his death he was a prospector and miner in Idaho and Montana. He never married and has spent all his life on the frontier in advance of civilization." I have not found Isaac on the 1860 or 1870 censuses at this time. He is listed at age 42 on the 1880 census of Los Pinos Canyon, Conejos Co., Colorado. At that time his occupation is given as Laborer on Railroad Grade. Isaac is listed at age 62 on the 1900 census of Thompson Twp, Missoula Co., Montana. His occupation at that time was Miner of Ores. An article published in the DeWitt (Nebraska) Times-News on October 8, 1908 states: "Isaac Jones of Montana visited here this week with his neices, Mrs Pluma Rossiter and Mrs. Joyce. Mr Jones was one of the earliest settlers of Nebraska. Away back in 1858 and 1859 he rode for the Pony Express which operated between St. Joe and San Francisco. Mr. Jones's route being from Marysvllle, Kansas to Fort Kearney (Nebraska). He is remembered by such old settlers as John Barrett, Robert Nicholas and Frank Baker. His relatives had not heard from him for twenty six years." Isaac is listed at age 62 on the 1900 census of Thompson, Missoula, Montana, and at age 72 on the 1910 census of Thompson, Sanders, Montana. Isaac Hendron Jones died on May 23, 1913 in DeWitt, Saline Co., Nebraska at the home of John Minor Joyce. He is buried near the John Minor and Amanda (Thompson) Joyce family plot, in Oak Grove Cemetery, DeWitt, Neb. There is another Isaac H. Jones, born about 1822 in Virginia, who also lived in Nebraska (Richardson Co). I don 't know if there is any relation between the two Isaacs.
