THE FAMILY OF MARTIN WILLIAM THOMPSON & EVALINA JONES

Martin William Thompson & Evalina Jones

Martin William Thompson married Evalina Jones on August 10, 1843 in Lawrence Co., Ohio and they had 10 children. The family is listed on the 1850 census Symms Twp, Lawrence Co., Ohio. Based on birth places of their children, they lived in Ohio until about 1854 when they began a series of moves. They had a child in Missouri in 1855 and a child in Texas in 1859. According to pension office documents, Martin was robbed and stabbed in Texas in 1858 by a "highway man", which left him an invalid for the rest of his life. The family is listed on the 1860 census of Easton Twp., Leavenworth, Kansas, and they had a child in Kansas in 1863. They settled in Nebraska by 1866, and they are listed on the 1870 & 1880 censuses of Beatrice, Gage Co., Nebraska.
There is a family story that Martin William Thompson died on April 30, 1892 in Leadville, Lake Colorado, and that he was shot while participating in the Colorado gold rush. The story continues that his body was returned to Nebraska for burial. The pension information that indicates that Martin was an invalid after 1858 may contradict this family story. Evalina Jones Thompson died on April 17, 1894 in Gage Co., Nebraska. They are both buried in Dolen Cemetery, Gage Co., Nebraska, but the only Thompson marker remaining is the one for Martin. Children of Evalina Jones & Martin William Thompson were: Foster M. (1844), Elizabeth Jane (1845), Amanda Caroline (1849), William Richard (1850), Mary Elizabeth (1853), Evalina (1855), Lucinda (1858), John Flemin (1859), Pluma A. (1863) & Osta Emmer (1866) Thompson.

She was an early resident of Beatrice". I'm not sure why she was listed in the article as being from Idaho in 1922, unless she returned there for a short time.
