Still another bio of Henry Stephen Wertz at http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/blair/bios/sell/wap-zook.txt notes this:
When Henry S. Wertz was about four years old, his parents moved to Somerset County, Pa., but six years later returned to Blair County and the father resumed farming in Greenfield Township.

Also, I think the bio indicates that the father of John Nicholas Stephens was not Peter Stephens/Steffey but another Nicholas? I bolded the pertinent sentence.

PROF. HENRY S. WERTZ, a prominent business man of Duncansville, Pa., senior member of the Duncansville Granite and Marble Works, is one of the best known educators in Blair County, having been more or less identified with educational work since he was nineteen years of age. He was born in Greenfield Township, Blair County, Pa., March 4, 1849, and is a son of Henry and Catherine (Stephens) Wertz.
Henry Wertz was born at Dayton, O., and his wife in Blair County, Pa., and both died in Greenfield Township. Nicholas Stephens, the maternal great-grandfather, was a pioneer in Blair County and his son, also Nicholas, resided for many years in Blair Township. In his later years he moved to Benton County, Ia., where he died, an octogenarian.

Best,
Nancy

Kari,

Thank you very much for your reply and offer to share information. I’ll respond to you as time permits. In the interim I’m copying 3 other active STEFFY researchers for any comments and/or interchange they may provide. Feel free to copy them on any correspondence and/or write them directly.

Yes, I would be very interested in Nicholas’ descendants. In the STEFFY line, Nicholas is a unique name. The only place I believe I ran into it was in Lancaster County, PA where he was listed as the son of Peter and later, when Peter moved to western York County, PA--and finally the Hollidaysburg, PA (Blair County)—areas, Nicholas apparently moved with him. (Although I think Nicholas, upon reaching his majority, for a time lived in Washington County—Hagerstown area—MD). If you care to provide me with your telephone number and a suggested time to call this evening—or another evening--that might be best for starters as there is so much to discuss. You are certainly welcome to any documentation that I have.

My good friend Dale E. Steffy has moved into a retirement home and given all his files to his nephew in New Mexico. I’ve corresponded with Dennis Kastens but haven’t yet located—or been given—his documentation on Johann STEPHAN and Elizabeth HALLER as being the parents of Johann Philip STEFFEN.

Peter left the Lancaster County area in 1781 because he was listed on the militia list as "having left the area." You can find him in the 1790 census for Paradise Township, York County, PA.
