Kari:

I just got your email after spending the whole evening on your website! I've been sorting out all the inter-relationships of the cemetry and I am going to send you an email I had just sent when I got yours. Please, there is no offense in my comment about the "close gene pool." By the way, Julie Farland is a distance cousin of Larry's. That is funny story how we got connected to her. In brief she had stuck an artifical flower on her gr-something-grandmother who is the daughter-in-law to Milcah Crow (Larry's gr-gr-gr-grandmother). When Al and we were digging Milcah's stone and repairing Arbella's, we kept commenting about where in the world that flower came from. It got moved here to there in the process of the repair work. One Saturday morning I put a search on for Arbella and low and behold, her tombstone came up with a pink artifical flower on it....and we soon connect to Julie and have had quite a bit of correspondence with her but have yet to meet her. Maybe this summer when we go over to work at the cemetery. She lives in the oposite direction from it.

Another note -- Al has an ulcer on his vocal cords and he is only suppose to say 20 words per day....for 3-4 months!

I may welcome information in the future on the Leamers, etc. Thanks so much for all the information so far! I am going to send you the sheets I printed for the Crow descendants that I correspond with. This doesn't show your families' stones but shows some of the work that has gone into it. I am sure that Al repaired the Williamson stones last fall.

Glenda

Dear Al & Shirley:

We had wanted to come when we were on spring break but it is probably fortunate that we didn't as 20 words around us wouldn't last long!!! :>) Sure hope that the rest you have given them will yeild good results.

I've been under the weather again and today my temp came down and I have spent time working on Prairie information and tonight I hit a gold mine as far as so many of the burials. The cemetery is certainly a "closed gene pool" as Larry calls something that has lots of intermarrige.

Here is some of what I found:

Starting with a Nicholas & Mary Stephens (burial unknown):
Had 4 Children: Margaret, Henry, Rebecca, John, & Gennett

Margaret Stephen married David Hite (both at Prairie)
Children: Samuel, Henry, Mary Ann, Jacob, Nicholas, David, Rachel, Margaret
Catharine, John, Elizabeth, Eliza Jane

Henry Hite married Mildred Saunders (could this also be the
the Sander family at Prairie????)

Jacob married a Susan (probably the parents of two children
buried at Prairie -- Josephine & Oscar

Catharine married SA Yerkes, son of Elizabeth Meed Yerkes
Roberts (buried at Prairie) and brother to Jane Yerkes
Williams (buried at Prairie)

Eliza Jane Hite married Levi Latham -- his parents were
George & Lucy Latham (both buried at Prairie)
Children: Anna, Mary, Myrta

Henry Stephen married Margaret McDowell (both buried at Prairie) (more McDowells at Prairie)
Children: Harrison, James, Joseph, Mary Jane

Harrison was probably the WH who died in the Civil War

James Stephens married Althea Dickson (I think their stone is near
Henry's)

Children: Gertrude, Edgar & Frankie

Rebecca Stephen married Jacob Leamer
Children: Henrietta, David, Elizabeth, Eliza Jane, Sarah, Rachel, Delila, Joseph,
Henry, Martha (won't go into all the Leamers buried there)

Elizabeth Leamer married John Dilling
Children: Henrietta, Emma Jane, Mary Catherine, Sara

Henrietta married Silas Slaybaugh

Emma Jane married George W. Fry

Mary Catherine married George W. Hurless

Sarah married Ira Ferguson (Sarah buried at Prairie)

Gennett Stephens maried Richard Thompson
Children Samuel , Irwin

Here are the McDowells that I want to do some searching for to see if they are related:
Elizabeth McDowell Leamer, wife of David, b 9/1/1835 d 2/24/1884 2-53
Hannah McDowell Evans b 3/1/1838 d 1/8/1905 (2-8) wife of SM Evans
Rosane McDowell Ranhauser, husband Jacob Ranhouser

All are buried at Prairie

Wow, it is getting late and I need to get to bed. I think this will give you plenty to think about and "chew" on and if you have any additions and connections, pleased let me know!

Glenda 4 Larry 2

Still another bio of Henry Stephen Wertz at http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/blair/bios/sell/wap-zook.txt notes this:
When Henry S. Wertz was about four years old, his parents moved to Somerset County, Pa., but six years later returned to Blair County and the father resumed farming in Greenfield Township.

Also, I think the bio indicates that the father of John Nicholas Stephens was not Peter Stephens/Steffey but another Nicholas? I bolded the pertinent sentence.

PROF. HENRY S. WERTZ, a prominent business man of Duncansville, Pa., senior member of the Duncansville Granite and Marble Works, is one of the best known educators in Blair County, having been more or less identified with educational work since he was nineteen years of age. He was born in Greenfield Township, Blair County, Pa., March 4, 1849, and is a son of Henry and Catherine (Stephens) Wertz.
Henry Wertz was born at Dayton, O., and his wife in Blair County, Pa., and both died in Greenfield Township. Nicholas Stephens, the maternal great-grandfather, was a pioneer in Blair County and his son, also Nicholas, resided for many years in Blair Township. In his later years he moved to Benton County, Ia., where he died, an octogenarian.

Best,
Nancy
