THE FAMILY OF JACOB WEIBEL & MARIA SCHROTBERGER:

Jacob Weibel & Maria Schrotberger

Jacob Weibel married Maria Margaret Schrotberger on January 2, 1865 in Grundy County IL. Jacob had emigrated to America from Berne, Switzerland in 1860, and he met Maria through a preacher who preached in the Swiss settlement as well as a German settlement near Mazon. At the time of their marriage, Jacob was 31 and Maria was 17. Maria lived at home with her parents for 4 months until Jacob finished building a granary on land he had purchased in Jackson Twp. (near Elwood), Will Co., IL. On April 3, 1865, they moved into a granary, and two years after they were married, they purchased 60 acres adjoining their land. Two children, Aaron and Rolandus, were born in this granary. The family is listed on the 1870 census of Jackson Twp., Will Co., IL. In the fall of 1870, the family moved into their house. This was large and furnished better than most of the surrounding homes. Minnie, (Annia died at three months), Elmer, Ada, Clara, Oscar and Harvey were born in this new home. The family is listed on the 1880 census of Jackson Twp., Will Co., IL. Maria became ill with asthma and the doctor advised a higher climate, so they scouted Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. They decided on Nebraska because Maria had a sister, Barbara Meyer, and a brother, George Schrotberger, living there. A quarter section of land five miles southwest of DeWitt, Nebraska, was purchased from a Mr. Harris Southwick, who was living in New York but had inherited the Nebraska land. In the summer of 1886, Jacob and Rolandus came to Nebraska and built a granary on their land. The following spring the whole family moved to Nebraska. They arrived at DeWitt, Nebraska on February 22, 1887. Jacob and Aaron came with two train cars of their possessions. Maria came with the rest of the children in a passenger train. They brought with them two crates of brown leghorns, six horses, (one died on the train) implements, double carriage, wagons and household goods. For the first two weeks, until a stable and a fence were made, the family lived with relatives. They lived in the granary all that summer until they completed a house and moved in. They lived in that house for 21 years, but about 1908, when their youngest son (Harvey) was married, Jacob & Maria moved to another house in DeWitt. They rented a year, and then built another house in DeWitt that is still standing. They are listed on the 1900, 1910 & 1920 censuses of DeWitt, Saline Co., NE. Jacob spent his time working at cabinet making or visiting their children. Jacob Weibel died July 16, 1920 in DeWitt, Saline Co., NE. He died at the age of 87 after a prolonged illness. Maria is listed on the 1930 census of DeWitt, Saline Co., NE living next door to the family of James & Osta (Thompson) Reid and their daughter Ruth. Ruth later married Maria's great-nephew Ira Pfeifer (Ira's mother was first married to Jacob & Maria's oldest son Aaron, and remarried his cousin Ervin Pfeifer when Aaron died young.) Maria Schrotberger Weibel died on May 17, 1934 in DeWitt, Saline Co., NE. At the time of her death she was age 85. Jacob & Maria are both buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery, DeWitt, NE.
