Johanna
Brethouwer was Herman John Te Selle's "Hired Girl"
Johanna Brethouwer
was employed by Herman Te Selle as his "hired girl" to look after his
four children: Manus John Schreurs, Dela, William, and baby Dina.
Marriage
of Herman John Te Selle and Johanna Arnolda Brethouwer
I have a photocopy of
the marriage certificate of "H.J. Te Selle and Johanna A. Brethouwer";
they were married on "May Ninth, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy-Six."
She was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on April 7, 1859, and was the eldest child
of Dr. Evert J. Brethouwer and his wife, Helena (Van De Wege) Brethouwer. Witnesses
were Martinus/Martienus(?) Van De Wege and Prinsen, Justice of The Peace. It was
also signed by Evert J. Brethouwer, Johanna's father. Johanna was about 17 when
they were married.
The Brethouwers Lived in Wisconsin Before Going to Nebraska
Dr.
Brethhouwer was a country doctor; both he and his wife were born in the Netherlands.
His mother (Arnoldina Johanna Jentink-Brethouwer) died about 1847 on voyage to
USA; she was buried at sea. His father, Tony Aalbernados Brethouwer died in 1882
in Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, the Brethouwers lived on a small farm or acreage which
contained maple trees. They would tap the trees to collect buckets of maple syrup
to use on the table and make candy. According to Aunt Minnie and Aunt Lena, it
was the "only kind of candy they had."

Dear Kari,
The information on the Brethouwers on your page is great!
About Adrianus1831: see below. About Gerrit 1832 : I already told you I think this is not correct - wait for Ter Hoeve answer.
From Geert te Selle I earlier got the following information
that might be of interest to you !!!:
Tony Aalbernardus trouwt op 21-8-1833
in Winterswijk met Arnolda Johanna Jentink, waarbij hij een zoon erkent als de
zijne, te weten Adrianus Brethouwer geboren 2-2-1831.
Translation is about
this:
Tony Aalbernardus married 21-8-1833 in Winterswijk Arnolda Johanna Jentink,
and then he acknowledges a son of Arnolda Johanna being his own, and the name
of this son is Adrianus Brethouwer, born 2-2-1831.
(This means that the father
of Adrianus is most probably not known - should you need more information: please
ask Geert te Selle.
In the meantime I have sent him your questions as below
about the The Brinke family! Just wait for his answer.
Ina

Hi Kari & Ina:
It's been almost a year since I was in contact with each of you. I apologize for the neglect. I had indicated to Kari that I would be going to the Mormon's Family History Library in Salt Lake City last summer to research some of the Brethouwer issues that are still unanswered. Well, that trip didn't occur last summer, but I did finally make the trip earlier this month and was able to answer a few questions. Just as a reminder, I sent Kari an email on the 26th of June last year listing some of the Brethouwer issues. It is reproduced here:
Hi Kari -
I've gone through our correspondence and I've compiled a list of unresolved issues.
1) Verify 5 Nov 1807 marriage date for Adrianus Brethouwer and Catharina Helena Wanders. (Check the Aalten Church and Civil Marriage records.)
2) Verify 21 Aug 1833 Winterswijk marriage date in the original records for Tonij Brethouwer and Arnolda Johanna Jentink.
3) Attempt to find the source for the 1882 death of Tonij Brethouwer in Sheboygan Co., WI.
4) Attempt to find the source for the 1847 death of Arnolda Johanna Jentink, wife of Tonij Brethouwer, on the ship coming to America.
5) Attempt to identify the 2nd wife of Tonij Brethouwer. She possibly had a name similar to Anna Maria, married Tonij in about 1850, was the probable mother of Herman John who was born in 1852, and she probably died before 1860.
6) Attempt to determine whether Adrianus (John) who was born in 1831 was the natural or adopted son of Tonij Brethouwer. (Check the Winterswijk Birth registration of Adrianus and Marriage registration of Tonij and Arnolda to see what info they may contain.)
7) Attempt to identify Caroline, the 2nd wife of Evert Jan Brethouwer. (Check the Lancaster Co. and Gage Co., NE marriage registrations.)
8) Attempt to find out what happened to Jan Berend Brethouwer. You've already shown that he was not married to Maggie Jelsma or Florence Terry.
Let me know if you think I've forgotten anything.
John
Kari figured out the 8th issue even before
I generated the list. Here is what I have found on some of the other issues.
Issue
#1:
I sent a copy of the Dutch Reformed Church Record to Kari in July of last
year. It showed a banns date of 17 Oct 1807 and a marriage date of 01 Nov 1807.
I was unable to find a record of the marriage in the Aalten Civil Marriage records.
As far as I'm concerned, the 01 Nov 1807 marriage date is the correct date to
use until such time as another credible source shows otherwise.
Issue #2:
The
correct date for this marriage is 21 Aug 1833.
Issue #5:
I have reviewed
my records and have the following information that I found on various records
in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin: 1) Son Harmen Jan's Death Record showed his mother's
name to be Anna M. F. Brethouwer, 2) Son Harmen Jan's Marriage Record showed his
mother's name to be Maria Brethouwer, 3?) 1860 Federal Census shows her name to
be Anna Brethouwer (living with stepson Evert and his wife).
Issue #6:
I
have attached a copy of the note that appears on the 21 Aug 1833 marriage record
of Tony Brethouwer and Arnolda Jentink. I have attempted to transcribe the text,
but have only been partly successful. Perhaps Ina can correct and complete my
work and provide us with a translation that will indicate whether or not Adrianus
is the natural son of Tony:

From what I can tell, it does indicate that Tony is acknowledging that he is Adrianus' natural father, but I'm not sure.
Issue #7:
On 21 Jul 1903, in Lincoln, Lancaster
County, Nebraska, Evert J. Brethouwer (of Firth) married Mrs. Caroline Davenport
(of Lincoln), daughter of Joshua Bonney and Adelia Wilson. Caroline was 70 years
old and she was born in New York. The record can be found on Family History Library
Microfilm #2027738, Volume 23, Page 106.
That is all for now. I hope
you both find this infomation useful.

Subject: Issue
#5: Another possibility? & more
Hi Kari & Ina,
When I first started working on genealogy many years ago, looking at the Sheboygan County Censuses was one of the resources that I used heavily. I haven't looked at them for years now. I didn't understand the significance of apparently unrelated individuals living with families. I've learned since then and when Kari mentioned that Diena TeBrinke was living with Tony in 1860, it got me thinking. Perhaps Diena was Tony's step-daughter; she would have been listed as a boarder because she was not in any way related to the head of the household, Tony's son. On 24 May 1839 in Aalten, Derk Jan ten Brinke married Anna Maria Kolwagen. If these are Diena's parents, it is likely (in my opinion) that Anna Maria Kolwagen was Tony's second wife. Do either of you know who Diena's parents were? I noticed on Kari's website that the first son and daughter of Johanna TeBrinke (Diena's sister?) were named Dirk J. and Anna M.
I have a theory about "Hannah Lygis" also. I think she might be Janna Siggers who married Adrianus (John), Tony's oldest son. The age is right. I'd have to look at the original records (which I don't have easy access to) to see if this is really a possibility. Janna, by the way, was born 10 Nov 1824 in Herike, Markelo Gem., Overijssel Prov. (FHL #0116831, Entry #95 in the 1824 births)
Kari, I'm quite sure you are right about the age error related to Anna, Evert's first daughter, in the 1860 census. I guess I should have added a few more question marks to my note.
I also have some other info that you might want: Helena van de Wege was born on 30 May 1841 in Hoek Gem., Zeeland Prov. (FHL #0122409, Entry #19 in the 1841 births) I assume since your website doesn't show it, that you don't have this info.
Ina, thanks for the confirmation on the note that appeared on Tony's and Arnolda's marriage registration.
Regarding issues #3 & #4: I'd just like to find some more substantial evidence for these two. I'd really like to find a passenger manifest in the first case, and maybe a family Bible in the second case. Probably neither exists, but I keep hoping.
Later, John
