He (Stephen M. Northup) enlisted for service in the Civil War in 1864 and served as Private in the 40th Iowa Volunteers Co. I until the close of the war. During his absence in service, the home was burned by Southern sympathizers. There were ten children, the youngest was about 3 at this time. Civil War records
