Cyrus Winfield Northup was born on October 04, 1852 in Gallia Co., OH. His parents moved from Ohio to Iowa in the spring of 1853 when he was age 1-1/2. He is listed with his parents at age 3 on the 1856 census of Polk, Jefferson, Iowa, and at age 8 on the 1860 census of Lancaster Twp., Keokuk Co., IA. Cyrus was blinded when he was about age 8; a family history compiled by Marie Fox states: "He (Cyrus) went blind at the age of 8 years while they were living in Keokuk Co., Iowa. His eyes were apparently all right when he retired but were swollen shut by morning. Home remedies were applied but were of no good. The Doctor to whom they went used medicine too strong for the eyes and the sight was entirely destroyed." (Another cousin from another branch said that the story she heard was that Cyrus was hit in the head with a rod too hard during a punishment, and that he went blind from that.) At the age of 15 (1867) he entered a School for the Blind at Vinton, Iowa, which he attended for the better part of 6 years. Cyrus is listed with his parents at age 17 on the 1870 census of Competine Twp, Wapello Co., IA. His parents moved from Iowa to Kansas in 1874, and Cyrus joined them there in 1876. He is listed with his parents on the 1880 census of Iowa Twp., Rooks Co., KS. Cyrus Northup married Anna Victoria Potts on February 28, 1882 in Woodston, Rooks Co., KS and they had 8 children. At the time of their marriage, Cyrus (who was blind) was homesteading and making brooms and Anna was teaching school. The family is listed on the 1885 state census of Lowell, Rooks Co., KS. Because of ill health Cyrus gave up the broom business after he married, and for the next ten years sold goods on the road. In 1890 a failure of crops caused him to lose his homestead in Kansas & they emigrated to Cedar Co., MO. In the spring of 1891 they moved to Shenandoah, Page Co., IA, and they are listed there on the 1895 state census. The family remained there until 1896, when they moved to Atchison Co., Missouri where Anna taught school for a year. Her health failed and after more than a year of serious illness she was taken to the Sanitorium at College View, Nebraska, where she remained for six months. During that time, the seven children were scattered among friends and relatives. Anna is on the 1900 census of College View, Lancaster, NE in the Sanitorium - I have not been able to find Cyrus or any of the children in 1900 except for Esther, who is age 13 and listed as a servant in the household of William Tower in Edison, Furnas Co., NE. The family was reunited in the fall of 1900 in Shenandoah, Page Co., IA, where they lived until about 1903 when Anna took Mary, the youngest surviving child at that time, and spent about a year in Hot Springs, Arkansas (again for her health). In the meantime, Cyrus took the rest of the family and returned to Orleans, NE, where he built a home. Anna returned in May, much improved in health. They lived there for four years, Anna's health failed again, and she went with a friend to California to be with her sister for several months. Anna returned to Nebraska, and the family is listed on the 1910 census of Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE. In 1910 Cyrus sent his wife and two youngest daughters to Colorado Springs, CO for a year. They moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, and lived in Nebraska till the fall of 1917, when they moved to Marion, Kansas. They are listed on the 1920 census of McPherson, McPherson, KS. Anna's died July 1, 1920 in Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE, where she is buried. After that time Cyrus made his home with relatives and friends. Cyrus is listed at age 77 on the 1930 census of Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE, living in the household of his married son Harry. At that time his occupation is listed as Hammock Maker. Cyrus Northup died November 10, 1943 in Alva, OK. He is buried with Anna in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE.
