Hampton
E. Northup was born in March 10, 1782 in Virginia or Pennsylvania. He was the

She was the daughter of unknown parents
| Hampton E. Northup & Elizabeth Jane Dean | Hampton
E. Northup & Elizabeth Jane Dean were married on October 18, 1807 in Gallia
Co., OH. They had at least 8 children.. Hampton had been captured by the Indians
when he was age 9, and he lived with the tribe until he was about age 23 before
being returned to his parents about 1805. He retained some of their habits until
death, and often entertained the family and friends by Indian dances, etc. He
also is said to have returned to the Indians for awhile to care for the old squaw
who mothered him. Hampton Northup is listed as a head of household on an 1808
tax list, and on the 1808, 1810 & 1820 censuses, all in Gallia Co., OH. Hampton
died in 1826 in Gallia Co., OH. Elizabeth Jane Dean Northup remarried James
C. McCall on December 22, 1829. James McCall was the widower of Hampton's
sister Elizabeth Northup. Hampton's wife and sister were both named Elizabeth
Jane, and they were also both named Elizabeth Jane Northup at the time of their
marriage to James McCall, so this has led to some confusion. Gallia County record
books list the marriage of James McCall to Elizabeth (Dean) Northup on December
22, 1829, but there is also a record (source?) that the tombstone of James' first
wife Elizabeth Northup McCall (now illegible) had a death date for her of January
10, 1830, so more research is needed on that. The family is listed on the 1830
census of Harrison, Gallia Co., OH. James McCall had 12 children from his first
marriage, and he and Elizabeth (Dean Northup McCall) had two more children, born
in 1831 & 1833. There is a record dated July 21, 1831 appointing James McCall
the guardian of Joseph, James, Stephen, Elenor, Sarah & Nancy Northup. On
April Apr. 12, 1836 there is a land record for the sale of Sect. 13-5-15 which
is Green Twp, Gallia Co., OH. This land had belonged to Hampton E. Northup of
Huntington, who had bought it from his father Daniel Northup on Feb. 26, 1806.
Elizabeth, widow of Hampton, is listed as being remarried to James McCall. Hampton's
heirs are listed in age order, with each entitled to one-eighth part. The children
listed were Polly, Anna who married Jesse Ingels, Joseph D., Jane, Stephen, Eleanor,
Sarah, and Nancy Northup. Several of Hampton & Elizabeth's children emigrated
from Ohio to LaSalle Co., IL sometime between 1833 to 1838, and Elizabeth went
with them; James died in November 17, 1838, and I'm not sure if James died before,
during, or after the move. There is an Elizabeth McCall listed as a head of household
on the 1840 census of LaSalle Co., IL, living one household away from Thomas &
Polly (Northup) Dixon. From Illinois State Marriage Records, Elizabeth married
Lesley Kent on March 16, 1843 in LaSalle Co., Illinois. Lesley died or
they divorced, because she was remarried to John Murphy on June 26, 1849
in LaSalle Co., IL. John & Elizabeth Murphy are listed on the 1850 census
of Vermilion, LaSalle Co., IL. Elizabeth is listed as being age 60 when she was
actually 66, but as her husband John was age 62 it may have been vanity on her
part or census taker error. Her married daughter Polly Northup Dixon is living
in Salisbury, LaSalle Co., IL and her married daughter Nancy Northup Argubright
is living in Vermilion, LaSalle Co., IL that year. Elizabeth Jane Dean Northup
McCall died in August 1859 in Vermilionville, LaSalle Co., IL. |
The Children of Hampton T. Northup & Elizabeth Jane Dean:
| Polly Northup | Mary "Polly" Northup was born on
September 24, 1808 in Gallia Co., OH. Her father is listed as head of a household
on the 1808, 1810 & 1820 censuses of Gallia Co., OH. Polly's father died in
1826 when she was about age 18, and her mother remarried in August 1829 when she
was about age 21. Polly married Thomas Dixon on April 29, 1830 in Gallia
Co., Ohio, and they had 8 children. The family moved to Illinois sometime between
1833 to 1838 based on birthplaces of their children. They are listed on the 1840
census of LaSalle Co., IL one household away from Polly's mother Elizabeth McCall.
The family is listed on the 1850 census of Salisbury, LaSalle Co., IL. Mary is
listed with sons James & George in the household of married son Hampton Northup
on the 1860 census of Eden, LaSalle Co., IL. Thomas is not listed with them in
1860. I find him listed as a laborer that year in , Cosumnes, ElDorado, California.
Thomas and Mary are both listed on the 1870 census of Eden, LaSalle Co., IL. Dates
on the IGI on Familysearch.com and also a posted Northup/Dixon genealogy both
indicate that Thomas died on March 7, 1880, and Polly died a few hours later on
March 8 while visiting Frank McCall in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The memorials posted for
them on www.findagrave.com indicate that it was the reverse, and that Polly died
the day before Thomas while they were visiting in Iowa, so this needs to be checked.
Mary "Polly" Northup Dixon and her husband Thomas Dixon both died on
March 7/8, 1880 while visiting Frank McCall in Oskaloosa, Mahaska, Iowa. They
were returned to Illinois for burial, and were both buried in the same grave in
Old Cedar Point Cemetery, Tonica, LaSalle Co., Illinois on March 13, 1880. Notes for Mary "Polly" Northup Dixon
| Anna Northup | Anna Northup was born on May 7, 1812
in Gallia Co., OH. Her father is listed as head of a household on the 1810
& 1820 censuses of Gallia Co., OH. Anna's father died in 1826 when she was
about age 17, and her mother remarried in August 1829 when she was age 20. Anna
married Jesse Ingles on July 14, 1831 in Gallia Co., Ohio. Jesse &
Anna had at least 2 sons born in 1834 & 1836, and she is listed on a land
record as an heir of her deceased father in April 1836. There is a female Anna's
age in the household on the 1840 census of Harrison, Gallia Co., OH. Anna Northup
Ingles died on February 20, 1844 in Gallia Co., Ohio. She is buried in the
Rose Cemetery, Green Township, Gallia Co., Ohio. Tombstone states she was age
31 years, 9 months and 13 days when she died. There is a marriage record for a
Jesse Ingles who married Sarah Grant on September 19, 1844 in Gallia Co.,
OH, and there is another for a marriage record for Jesse Ingles who married Merry
Ann Waddell on October 27, 1850 in Gallia Co., OH. Jesse & wife Mary are
listed with the children on the 1850 census of Harrison, Gallia Co., OH. On both
the 1840 & 1850 censuses, the family is living by the family of Anna's brother
Joseph Northup. Notes for Anna Northup Ingles

and his mother remarried James McCall in August 1829 when he was about age 15.
Joseph chose his stepfather James McCall to be his guardian on July 21, 1831.
Joseph married Mary Iron (Irion) on August 10, 1838 in Gallia Co., OH and
they had 10 children. The family is listed on the 1840 & 1850 censuses of
Harrison, Gallia Co., OH. Joseph & Mary moved with most of their children
from Ohio to Iowa sometime between 1852 to 1854. They are listed on the 1860 census
of Locust Grove Twp., Jefferson Co., Iowa. I think they sold their land in Gallia
Co., OH to Henry Clay Northup; on the 1840 & 1850 they are listed next door
to the household of Jesse Ingles, but on the 1860 census Henry & Charlotte
(Gilbert) Northup are listed next to Jesse. (Henry is the son of Joseph's cousin
Thomas Jefferson Northup). Joseph D. Northup died on August 22, 1862, probably
in Jefferson Co., Iowa. Mary died on April 09, 1868, also probably in Iowa.
Raymond Fowler, a grandson of Joseph Northup, married Leva Moore, daughter of
Joseph Moore
& Nancy Hulstine. Notes for Joseph D. Northup
| Jane Northup | Jane Northup was born in 1817 in Gallia
Co., OH. Her father is listed as head of a household on the 1820 census of

and also VanBlalve) Joseph & Jane had at least 4 children, born between 1849
to 1857.The family is listed on the 1850 & 1860 censuses of Deer Park, LaSalle
Co., IL. Joseph died sometime between 1860 to 1870, and Jane is listed as head
of household on the 1870 census of Deer Park, LaSalle Co., IL. The last name on
the censuses is listed as Bralock, Graylock & Blaylock. Jane Northup Shaw
Harrington Blaylock died in 1872 in Deer Park, LaSalle Co., IL. Notes for Jane Northup Shaw Harrington Blaylock
| Stephen M. Northup | Stephen Monroe Northup was born
on January 23, 1819 in Gallia Co., OH. His father is listed as head of a household
on the 1820 census of Gallia Co., OH. Joseph's father died in 1826 when he was

burned by Southern sympathizers. There were ten children, the youngest was about
3 at this time. The family is listed on the 1870 census of Competine Twp, Wapello
Co., IA. In 1874 they moved to Rooks Co., Kansas, where they homesteaded. A biography
on their youngest daughter Emma states that the family homesteaded one mile west
of Woodston in 1874, just in time to experience the disastrous grasshopper invasion
for that year. The same biography also says "The Northups were of a staunch,
Puritan stock, originally from Ohio." Stephen & Harriet and family are
listed on the 1880 census of Iowa Twp., Rooks Co., KS. They are listed on the
1885 & 1895 state censuses of Lowell, Rooks Co., KS. Harriet died on August
