| Clarkson F. Brooks & Sarah Clark | Clarkson Freeman
Brooks and Sarah "Sallie" Clark were married about 1805, probably in
New Jersey or New York. Census and other records indicate they had as many
as 15 children. I know birth dates for possibly 12 of them, and there are two
sons named Clarkson & a second son named David that are listed in a family
writeup that are in addition to the ones I have listed below. Clarkson F. Brooks
is listed as a buyer of lands in the Holland purchase in New York in 1808. The
family is listed on the 1810 census of Riga, Genesee Co., New York and on the
1820 census of Gains, Genesee Co., New York. Orleans County was formed from part
of Genesee Co., NY in 1824, and Clarkson Brooks is listed as a head of household
on the 1830 census of Gaines, Orleans, Co., New York. The family moved from New
York to Miami Co., Ohio about 1835, and then moved from Ohio to Illinois about
1837. There is a land purchase records for Clarkson F. Brooks in Illinois dated
October 10, 1839, and they are listed on the 1840 & 1850 censuses of Logan
Co., Illinois. They moved from Illinois to Ohio between 1850 to 1856, and they
are listed on the 1860 census of the City of Piqua, Miami Co., Ohio. Clarkson
Freeman Brooks died on January 24, 1865 in Piqua, Miami Co., Ohio. Sarah "Sallie"
Clark Brooks died on September 4, 1866 in Piqua, Miami Co., Ohio. Clarkson
& Sarah are buried in Raper Chapel Cemetery, Troy, Miami Co., Ohio. Notes for Clarkson Freeman Brooks Notes for Sarah "Sallie" Clark Brooks |
The children of Clarkson Freeman Brooks and Sarah Clark
| Jane Brooks | Jane Brooks was born about 1806 in Genesee Co.,
New York. I have seen online trees that list her as being born in 1817, but
census records and ages of her children do not support that date. There is a female
in the household of Clarkson Brooks in the right age group to be Jane, age 3,
on the 1810 census of Riga, Genesee Co., New York and to be Jane, age 13, on the
1820 census of Gaines, Genesee (later Orleans) Co., New York. Jane married Solomon
Steenrod about 1828 and they had at least 7 children, born between 1829 to
1847. I have not found them on the 1830 census at this time. Jane's parents moved
from New York to Ohio about 1835, and from Ohio to Illinois about 1837, and I
believe Solomon & Jane traveled with them. The household of Solomon Steenrod
is listed on the 1840 census of Logan Co., Illinois near the households of Clarkson
& David Brooks and several Clark families. Solomon & Jane & family
are listed on the 1850 & 1855 censuses of Logan Co., Illinois - at that time
Jane is listed as age 43, born New York. Solomon Steenrod died of typhoid fever
on June 6, 1859 in Aetna Twp., Logan Co., Illiois. Jane is listed at age 55 with
the children on the 1860 census of Mt. Pulaski, Logan Co., Illinois. According
to a book on the Steenrod family, Jane Brooks Steenrod died between 1860 to
1870 in Aetna Twp., Logan Co., Illinois. I have not found her on the 1870
census at this time. Notes for Jane Brooks Steenrod
| David Brooks | David Brooks was born on July 4,
1810 in Genesee Co., New York. Birthdate is calculated from the information
on his gravestone. There is a male the right age to be David, age infant, in the
household of "Clark" Brooks on the 1810 census of Riga, Genessee Co.,
New York. There is a male who could be David listed in the household of Clarkson
Brooks on the 1820 (age 10) & 1830 (age 20) censuses of Genesee (later Orleans)
Co., New York. David married Phoebe Clark on February 7, 1833, probably
in New York, and they had 6 children. A family account written by their granddaughter
Daisy Constance Dement Gandy (1872-1954) states that "John Winans Clark in
an early day settled in Bourbon Co., Kentucky where he and Ann Isgrigg were married
in Paris, Kentucky where their older children were born, among them Phebe in 1814,
who at the age of 18, married David Brooks of Kentucky, a first cousin. Soon after
their marriage, they moved to New York near Albany, where their first child was
born (Hannah, born August 13, 1833). Later (about 1835) Phebe and David moved
to Staunton Twp., Miami Co., Ohio, and in 1837 to Sangamon Co., Illinois near
the town of Athens where one of Phebe's older brothers had settled some few years
before." I have some questions about the years these moves occurred because
their son John Clarkson Brooks, born October 10, 1835, is listed on all census
records as having been born in Illinois. David is listed as a head of household
on the 1840 census of Logan Co., Illinois, living near the household of his parents,
married sister Jane Steenrod, and several Clark families. David Brooks died
on April 2, 1845 in Logan Co., Illinois. He is buried in the Laenna cemetery,
Aetna Twp., Logan Co., Illinois. Thanks to FAG contributor Jan Miller for the
photo of David's gravestone. The written account by Daisy Gandy states that Phoebe
only had 3 living children when David died in 1845 (Hannah, John & Cornelia)
Phoebe remarried Samuel Dement on February 16, 1846 in Logan Co., Illinois.
Samuel was a widower with four children from his first marriage, and he and Phoebe
had at least 4 more children (although two of their sons died in infancy). The
family is listed on the 1850 census of Logan Co., Illinois. Samuel Dement died
on April 7, 1855 in Logan Co., Illinois. Phoebe is listed with some of her children
on the 1860 census of Mt. Pulaski, Logan Co., IL. The account by Daisy Gandy states
(with my notes in parenthesis): "Samuel died in 1855, leaving Phebe a widow
for the second time, with the care of 6 children, her oldest daughter Hannah having
been married a few years before Samuel's death. It is likely that Phebe continued
on the farm until her second son was married (Asa Dement, married Augusta Myrick
in February 1870. Phoebe is listed in the houseold of Asa Dement on the 1870 census
of Aetna, Logan Co., Illinois). He (Asa) bought the farm which is located in Yankeetown,
Logan Co., Illinois. Phebe move to Chestnut (Logan Co., Illinois) and one of her
brothers, a widower, lived with her for a time; then 3 of his grandsons for awhile.
After the death of my mother, Father took my baby sister and me to her to make
our home. (Daisy's mother Augusta Myrick Dement died on November 6, 1877). My
sister died within a year and I lived with Grandmother Phebe until my Father's
second marriage 2 yr. later (Daisy's father Asa Dement remarried on November 28,
1879)." Phoebe is listed in the household of her married son Asa Dement on
the 1870 & 1880 censuses of Aetna, Logan, Co., Illinois. At some time between
1880 to 1892 Phoebe moved to Nebraska, probably with the family of Asa Dement
or one of her other grown children. Phoebe Clark Brooks Dement died on March
4, 1892 in Hayes Center, Hayes Co., Nebraska or Culbertson, Hitchcock, Nebraska.
In 1900 her son Asa is living in Hayes Center, Hayes Co., Kansas. The Family of David Brooks & Phoebe Clark Notes for David Brooks
| Freeman Brooks | Freeman Brooks was born on April
29, 1811 in Genesee Co., New York. There is a male the right age to be him
listed in the household of Clarkson Brooks on the 1820 & 1830 censuses of
Genesee (later Orleans) Co., New York. His parents moved from New York to Ohio
about 1835 and I believe Freeman came with them. His parents moved to Illinois
in 1837, but Freeman & his brother James remained in Ohio. Freeman married
Mary Ann Sutton in 1837 in Miami Co., Ohio, and they had at least 3 children.
James & Freeman Brooks are both listed as heads of household on the 1840
census of Piqua, Miami Co., Ohio. In 1840 there was a wife and 1 female child
under age 5 in the household of Freeman Brooks. There are also two young sons
buried in Raper Chapel Cemetery in Troy, Miami, Ohio, whose gravestones say they
were children of Freeman & Mary Brooks. Mary died on January 22, 1845, and
she is buried in Raper Chapel Cemetery. Freeman married Judith Smith in
April 1847, probably in Miami or Shelby Co., Ohio. Freeman & Judith are listed
on the 1850, 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses of Sidney, Shelby Co., Ohio. In 1850
there are is a 3 year old female living in the household who may be a daughter,
but in later census years the only children in the household are a nephew and
niece. On all census records Freeman's occupation is listed as Stable keeper,
"keeps livery stable" or Livery Man. Freeman Brooks died on October
22, 1880, in Ohio. He is buried in the Raper Chapel Cemetery, Troy, Miami,
Ohio. I have not found Judith on the 1900 census at this time. Children of Freeman
Brooks & Mary A. Unknown are Unknown Daughter, Daniel & Andrew I. Brooks,
all born between 1835-1845. Notes for Freeman Brooks
| James W Brooks | James W. Brooks was born
about 1813 in Genesee Co., New York. There is a male the right age to be him
listed in the household of Clarkson Brooks on the 1810, 1820 & 1830 censuses
of Genesee (later Orleans) Co., New York. His parents moved to Illinois in 1837,
but James & his brother Freeman remained in Ohio. James married Cornelia
Unknown sometime between 1830-1840, probably in Miami Co., Ohio. James &
Freeman Brooks are both listed as a heads of household on the 1840 census of Piqua,
Miami Co., Ohio. In 1840 there was a wife and 3 children in the household of James
Brooks. The family is listed on the 1850 census of Washington, Miami Co., Ohio.
Based on birthplaces of their children, the family moved from Ohio to Michigan
about 1855. They are listed on the 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses of Detroit,
Wayne Co., Michigan, and on City Directories there through 1887. (Amanda Brooks
Albertson, another of Clarkson Brooks children, also emigrated to Detroit with
her husband and children and is listed on the 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses there.)
James is living in the same town as Hiram Brooks in 1850, and in 1860 & 1870
there is a child named DeGrass living in this household (listed as male in 1860
& incorrectly as female in 1870). James' occupation was listed as Livery Dealer
in 1860. It is listed as Liquor Dealer in 1870 (the same as Amanda Brooks Albertson's
husband), as bitters mfnr in 1873, King & Brooks in 1874, Patent Medicine
Manfr in 1880, and medicines in 1884 & 1885. James W. Brooks died on December
13, 1897 in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan. Cornelia is listed as widowed in
the 1899 & 1900 City Directories and 1900 census of Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan.
The 1901 Detroit City Directory lists that she died at age 84 on October 7, 1900.

| Hiram Brooks | Hiram Brooks was born about 1816 in Gaines, Genesee
Co., New York. There is a male the right age to be him listed in the household
of Clarkson Brooks on the 1820 census of Gaines, Genesee Co., NY. There is not
a male in his age group in Clarkson Brooks' household on the 1830 census of Gaines,
Orleans Co., New York, but there is an unidentified male in the age group right
below so this may be census taker error. Hiram's parents moved from New York to
Miami Co., Ohio when he was about age 19. They moved from Ohio to Illinois when
he was about age 21, but I do not think Hiram went with them. I have not found
him on the 1840 census at this time, but he was age 24 and may have been living
in a different household as a laborer. Hiram married Catherine A. Atkinson
in 1841 in Miami Co., Ohio, and they had at least 7 children. The family is listed
on the 1850, 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses of Washington Twp., (Piqua City),
Miami Co., Ohio. Hiram's occupation was the owner of a Livery Stable. Hiram
Brooks died in January 1898 in Piqua, Miami Co., Ohio. Catherine died in February
1894. Both are buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua, Miami County, Ohio. Notes for Hiram Brooks
| Sarah Brooks | Sarah Brooks was born about 1819
in Genesee Co., New York. There is a female the right age to be her listed
in the household of Clarkson Brooks on the 1820 (age 2) & 1830 (age 12) censuses
of Genesee (later Orleans) Co., New York. Sarah moved with her parents from New
York to Miami Co., Ohio about 1835. Sarah married John Shideler French on
March 10, 1837. John had previously been married to Mary Hitchell, with
whom he had 2 children. Sarah was age 16 at the time of the marriage. John &
Sarah had two sons, both of whom died in infancy. Sarah's parents moved from Ohio
to Illinois in 1837, but I don't think John & Sarah went with them. Sarah
Brooks French died on May 23, 1838 in Staunton, Miami Co., Ohio, one week after
giving birth to her second son, James. Her gravestone says she was age 18
when she died. Sarah is buried in Raper Chapel Cemetery, Troy, Miami Co, Ohio.
Thanks to FAG contributor Jamey Deeter for her gravestone photo. John French was
married third on March 9, 1843 to Rhoda Ann Jackson, and they had 4 children.
The family is listed on the 1850 census of Staunton, Miami Co., Ohio. John was
married last to Mary Speagh on November 11, 1867. John died in 1890 in
Chester, Logan, Illinois. Children of Sarah Brooks & John S. French were George
Washington (1837) & James (1838) French. Notes for Sarah Brooks French
| Andrew Brooks | Andrew Brooks was born about 1821 in Genesee Co., New York. He is listed on several online trees as being a son of this family, and looking at the years the other children were born it seems reasonable that there would be a child born between 1818 to 1824. There is a male the right age to be Andrew, age 9, in the household of Clarkson Brooks on the 1830 census Gaines, Orleans Co., New York, but there is not one the right age to be their son Hiram, age 14, who is living next door to Clarkson in 1850 so I think at this time the male listed was Hiram and the census taker put the number in the wrong column. I have not found any other records for this Andrew Brooks at this time. In 1850 Clarkson Brooks has a son (grandson?) named Andrew living in his household who was born in 1843 in Ohio. There is no son named Andrew listed in a written account of the family posted on Genforum, but there are 2 sons named Clarkson and a second son named David that I do not have in my database.Andrew Brooks died sometime after 1821, and possibly before 1830 in Gaines, Genesee (later Orleans) Co., New York. | |
| Rebecca Brooks | Rebecca Brooks was born on February
25, 1824 in Gaines, Orleans Co., New York. The 1850 census states that she
was born in Ohio, but siblings before and after her were all born in New York,
and since the family lived in Ohio before moving to Illinois that may just be
an error. Rebecca is not listed in a written history posted on Genforum for Clarkson's
family, but it only names 4 daughters and the females posted in the census records
between 1810 to 1840 indicate that Clarkson & Sallie had 5 daughters. There
is a female the right age to be Rebecca, age 6, listed in the household of Clarkson
Brooks on the 1830 censuses of Gaines, Orleans Co., New York, and no other known
daughter for Clarkson fits into that age category. Her parents moved from New
York to Miami Co., Ohio when when she was about age 9, and from Ohio to Illinois
when she was about age 11. I have not found Rebecca on the 1840 census at this
time, but she was age 16 and could have been living in another household than
her parents. Rebecca married Abraham McKinney in 1847, probably in Logan
Co., Illinois although I have not found them on the Illinois state marriage index.
They had at least 5 children, two of which died young. The family is listed on
the 1850 census of Logan Co., Illinois. Rebecca Brooks McKinney died on September
29, 1856 in Logan Co., Illinois, possibly at the time of the birth of her
last child. Rebecca is buried in Bowers-Templeman Cemetery, Mount Pulaski, Logan,
Illinois, along with children Daniel & Letty Jane. Thanks to FAG contributor
Jan Miller for the photo of Rebecca's gravestone. Abraham was married second to
Sarah Ratcliff on August 9, 1859 in Logan Co., Illinois. The family is
listed on the 1860 census of Lincoln, Logan, Illinois. Children of Rebecca Brooks
& Abraham McKinney were: Sarah Hetha (1848), Daniel M (1850), Letta Jane (1851),
Samuel William (1854) & Mary R. (1856) McKinney. Notes for Rebecca Brooks McKinney
| Degrass Brooks | Degrass Brooks was born about 1827 in Gaines, Orleans
Co., New York. There is a male the right age to be Degrass, age 3 listed in
the household of Clarkson Brooks on the 1830 census of Gaines, Orleans Co., NY.
His parents moved from New York to Miami Co., Ohio when he was about age 10, and
from Ohio to Illinois when he was about age 12. There is a male the right age
to be Degrass, age 13, in the household of Clarkson Brooks on the 1840 census
of Logan Co., IL. Degrass married Martha Eamine Allen about 1849 and they
had at least 3 children. They probably married in Logan Co., Illinois, but I have
not been able to find them on the Illinois State marriage index at this time.
The family is listed on the 1850 census of Logan Co., Illinois, living near Clarkson
Brooks and several other Brooks and Clark households. They are listed on the 1860
census of Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois; at that time Degrass is listed as occupation
Hotel. Martha died or they divorced before 1862, and Degrass remarried Flora
Hewes/Jewes on October 15, 1862. Flora died or they divorced between 1862
to 1870, and Degrass remarried Lucinda Myrick on May 21, 1870 in Logan
Co., Illinois. I have not found Degrass on the 1870 census at this time, but I
did find his daughter Flora from his first marriage is living with her Aunt Amanda
(Brooks) Albertson in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan that year. Lucinda Myrick Brooks
died on August 15, 1871. Degrass Brooks died sometime after 1870, but I don't
know when or where. Degrass' son Albert Brooks married Mary Myrick November
1, 1871 in Logan Co., IL. Mary was the sister of Albert's stepmother, Lucinda
Myrick. I have not found Degrass Brooks on the 1880 or any later census record
at this time, but Albert & Mary Brooks were in Logan Co., Illinois in 1880,
and emigrated to Gosper Co., Nebraska by 1900. Notes for Degrass Brooks
| Amanda Brooks | Amanda Clarissa Brooks was born on October 6,
1830 in Gaines, Orleans Co., New York. Her gravestone says she was born in
1827, but I believe this is an error as there is no female in Clarkson Brooks'
household in 1830 under the age of 10, all census records for Amanda indicate
a birthyear of 1830-1832, and the 1900 states that it was October 1830. Her parents
moved from New York to Miami Co., Ohio when she was about age 4, and from Ohio
to Illinois when she was about age 6. There is a female the right age to be Amanda,
age 9, in the household of Clarkson Brooks on the 1840 census of Logan Co., Illinois,
and she is listed with her parents at age 19 on the 1850 census of Logan Co.,
Illinois. Her parents moved from Illinois back to Miami Co., Ohio sometime between
1850 to 1856, but I don't think Amanda went with them. Amanda Brooks married Henry
Marshall Albertson. An IGI record says that the marriage occurred on on July
25, 1857 in Lincoln, Logan, Illinois, but I have not found the record on the Illinois
State marriage index at this time. If this date is correct, Ida, the older of
of the 2 children listed with them on all census records may have been from a
previous relationship for Henry or Amanda. Henry & Amanda emigrated from New
York to Michigan sometime between 1854 to 1859 and they are listed on the 1860,
1870 & 1880 censuses of Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan. Amanda's older brother
James also moved with his family to Detroit, Michigan about 1855, and I have found
them on the census there in 1870 & 1880; it is very possible that the two
families moved together as both James Brooks & Henry Albertson's occupations
were given as "liquor dealer" (Albert in 1860 & James in 1870).
Albert's occupation in 1870 is listed as Travelling agent, and in 1880 as Agent
City Directory. Henry Albertson died on July 29, 1896, probably in Detroit, Wayne,
Michigan. Amanda is listed as widowed on the 1900 census of Ward 2, Detroit, Wayne
Co., Michigan living with her married daughter Ida (Albertson) Marks. Amanda is
listed on the 1910 census, and in the 1911 City Directory of Detroit, Wayne Co.,
Michigan, living at 57 Sibley Street. In both 1900 & 1910, Amanda is listed
as having 2 births with 2 surviving children. She is listed on the 1920 census
of Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan at age 88, living at 565 Cass Avenue with another
widowed woman (age 70) who is listed as being a nurse. Amanda Clarissa Brooks
Albertson died on April 2, 1922, probably in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan.
Henry & Amanda are buried in Woodmere Cemetery, Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan.
Thanks to FindAGrave contributor "The Lady In Black" for the photos
of Amanda's gravestone. Children of Amanda Clarissa Brooks & Henry Marshall
Albertson are Ida (1854) & Arthur (1859) Albertson. Notes for Amanda Brooks Tombstone of Henry & Amanda Brooks Albertson
| Catharine Brooks | Catharine Parmelia "Kate" Brooks was born
on February 4, 1834 in Gaines, Orleans Co., New York. Her parents moved from
New York to Miami Co., Ohio when she was about age 1, and from Ohio to Illinois
when she was about age 3. There is a female the right age to be Catharine, age
6, in the household of Clarkson Brooks on the 1840 census of Logan Co., Illinois,
and she is listed with her parents at age 16 on the 1850 census of Logan Co.,
Illinois. Her parents moved from Illinois back to Miami Co., OH between 1850 to
1856, and Catharine went with them. Catharine married John G. Peterson
on December 13, 1856 in Miami Co., Ohio and they had at least 4 children. They
are listed in the household of Catharine's parents on the 1860 census of Piqua
City, Miami Co., Ohio. John & Catharine & family are listed on the 1870,
1880 & 1900 censuses of Staunton, Miami Co., Ohio. In 1900 it stated that
John & Catharine had been married 44 years, and that Catharine had 4 births
with 3 surviving children at that time. John died in 1903 in Miami Co., Ohio,
and Catharine is listed as mother-in-law and widowed in the household of Theodore
H. Shearer on the 1910 census of Staunton, Miami Co., Ohio. The 1910 census stated
that Catharine had 4 births with 2 surviving children; Theodore Shearer was the
widower of Catharine's daughter Ada, who had died in 1904. Catharine moved from
Miami to Darke Co., Ohio between 1910-1920, probably with her daughter Stella.
She is listed at age 85 as mother-in-law in the household of Frank & Stella
(Peterson) Martin on the 1920 census of Wayne, Darke Co., Ohio. Catharine "Kate"
Brooks Peterson died on May 11, 1923 in Versailles, Darke Co., Ohio. John
& Catherine are buried in Raper Chapel Cemetery, Troy, Miami Co., Ohio. Children
of Catharine Parmelia Brooks & John Gilmore Peterson were: Ada (1857), Willis
(1860), Frederick (1865) & Stella (1868) Peterson. Notes for Catharine "Kate" Brooks Peterson |
