By 1860 all of the children of Michael had left home except the youngest daughter, Sarah, and her son William Wallace. Will and his wife Elizabeth were living with Michael when the 1860 census was taken.

Michael George died June 1, 1862, at his home. Dr. Joseph E. Bell, a local physician, made this entry in his diary, "Michael George was found dead i his bed thism orning June 1, 1862. The circumstances surrounding his death must have been questioned because an inquest was ordered to be held. A jury was appointed, and Dr. William Cavener conducted the examination. An inquest was also ordered for William Mysinger who died at approximately the same time, Esquire Wiliam Jones Ruble held both inqquests. (Greene County Minute Bood 1859-1864, pp.483, 49 0; private papers of William J. Ruble, Esqure). Their deaths occurred during troubled times in Greene County because of the divided loyalty during the Civil War. Many mysterious beating and deaths occurred.

"Michael (George) married Nancy Kelley on January 13, 1828. Nancy was born April 23, 1802, and died October 4, 1844. She was the daughter of John Kelley Jr. and Eleanor (Harrison) Kelley. The Kelley and Harrison families were early settlers in Greene County (Tennessee). Her grandfather, John Kelley Sr., came from Ireland and was a teacher. The Harrison family came from England and settled on Long Island, New York. They eventually migrated to Virginia and Tennessee. The history of the Harrison family is recorded in "Settlers by the Long Grey Trail" by J. Houston Harrison."
