1822 - Stokes County Land Deed:
This indenture made this the 7th day of August one thousand eight hundred and twenty two between Thomas Philips of the County of Stokes and State of North Carolina and John Kinnamon of the county and state aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said Thomas Philips for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and sixty dollars to him in hand paid by the said John Kinnamon the reciept of which is hereby acknowledged hath given granted sold unto the said John Kinnamon his heirs or assigns all that tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county aforesaid on the waters of Abbotts Creek Beginning at a red oak saplin on John Kinnamon's line running east fifty two chains and twenty five links to a stake on Jeremiah Fields line to a stake in an old field thence south to the beginning containing by estimation one hundred and fifteen acres be the same more or less to have and to hold to the said John Kinnamon his heirs or assigns forever and also all woods ways waters and all the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any way appertaining thereunto together with all the wright (?) titles (?) clause (?) and demand of the said Thomas Phillips of and into the said land and premises hereby granted to have and to hold the aforesaid land and premises with the appurtenances unto the said John Kinnamon his heirs or assigns and to the only proper use and behalf (?) the said John Kinnamon and his heirs in fee simple forever. And the said Thomas Philips for himself and his heirs the aforesaid land and premises, and every part thereof against him and his heirs, and assigns and his heirs and assigns shall and will warrant, and forever defend by these presents in witness whereof the said Thomas Philips hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day and date above written.

About 1823 -Thomas moved from North Carolina to Indiana. Family stories differ on whether he went alone and was joined (found?) by Martha and the children later, or if the family went together.

1826 - son Isaac born in NC or IN (probably Indiana)

1828 - son Greenberry born in Indiana
1829 - daughter Martha born in NC - Thomas left his wife Martha about this time - did she return to her family in NC for the birth??? Or was Martha born in Indiana??

About 1829 - left Martha with woman Mary (later married?) and also took children Easter & Greenberry.

1830 - age 40

1833 - Martha married John Stagg

John Stagg was born 1760 Bergen County, New Jersey. He died 9 Jul 1846. He was married 1833 to Martha Phillips. Children: Sarah married Philip Stoat. Source Page 341, Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution Buried in Indiana, 1938.

Isaac lived and died in that part of Rowan County, North Carolina that ultimately became Stokes County in 1759 and he never moved from this area.

Samuel's brother, Isaac, who moved with his family in a covered wagon to Washington County, Indiana, became the great great grandfather of ZaZu Pitts, the movie comedienne (Life with Father, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World).
