June 4, 1912 - Declaration for Pension. States that he is Joseph Moore, age 70, of Mt. Vernon, Lawrence Co., MO. That he was enrolled at Mt. Vernon MO under the name Joseph or Joe Moore on the 25th day of May 1861 as a private in Capt. Peter F. Clark's Independent Calvalry Co., of Lawrence Co., MO Home Guards in the Civil War. That he was honorably discharged at Fort Scott, KS on Sept. 1 1861 and did not enlist in any other US service. It states that his personal description was not taken at time of enlistment, that his occupation is farmer, and that he was born on August 12, 1841 in Warren Co., Tennessee. His places of residence since leaving the service were listed as follows: "1st Lawrence Co., MO. In 1869 to 1872 - Green Co., MO & then back to said Lawrence Co., MO for a few months & then to Marion Co., Arkansas & there about 2 years 1874 or 1875 - and then back to Lawrence Co., MO and in said Lawrence Co., MO since then." That he had not applied for pension until now because he did not know the Home Guards were pensionable till last few days. Joseph made his mark to sign the paper.

Joseph Moore was
born in White Co., Tenn., Aug. 12, 1841; died at his home in Mt. Vernon, Jan.
17, 1919, age 77 years, five months and five days. He was married to Miss Nancy
Hulstein, Dec. 27, 1861. To this union were born eleven children -- five boys
and six girls -- three dying in infancy. Mrs. Sarah Phillips, died March 17, 1891;
John Moore died Aug. 12, 1908; Tom Moore died March 6, 1911. He was converted
at the age of nineteen years and joined the church at Pisgah and some years after
moved his membership to Summit, and was a charter member of that church. "Uncle
Joe," as he was familiarly known, was loved and respected by all who knew
him. He leaves a widow, four daughters, and one son: Mrs. H. N. Vass, Mrs. Lenna
Smith, Mrs. Leva Fowler, of Mt. Vernon, Mrs. Clara Smith, of Carthage, Mo.; Andy
Moore, of Parsons, Kansas; also four sisters and a host of friends and neighbors
to mourn their loss. A FRIEND.
