"The Phillips
Family Tree" by John Phillips, 1986 & Ken & Lucille Phillips, 1994
JOHN
ALMOND PHILLIPS was born in January 1848 near Deputy, Indiana. Like his three
brothers, he went by his middle name. He became a huckster, then an auctioneer.
He lived many places, often with relatives, who seemed to appreciate his good
humor and jokes. He spent some time with brother Addison in Azalia, Indiana, probably
before marrying Viola J. Whitsitt November 11, 1874 in Scott County, Indiana.
"Ola" was born in 1847 to Allen Hill Whitsitt and the former Mary Jane
Harrod. Almond and Ola had Flora Glenn in 1876, Homer Charles in 1878 and Porter
H. in 1880, Viola died of typhoid in 1881 (see John T. Phillips in previous generation).
On June 10, 1882 in Scott County, Almond married Lauretta B. Herrod, whom he had
dated before he married Ola. Retta was born in August 1848. They had one child,
La Verne in 1889.
In 1900 the family lived at 531 West Washington in Indianapolis.
At one time or another, Almond also lived in Brownsburg, Indiana, where two of
his children married and remained. When Porter and La Verne grew up and moved
to the Los Angeles area, Retta so missed her son that she and Almond decided to
move there, too. They got as far as Porter's home, where, Retta, who hadn't been
well, became quite ill. On April 17, 1913, not long after her son La Verne came
to visit, she died. Relatives say she probably was buried in California. Almond
apparently stayed in California a few years, then lived with sister Mary's family
in Indiana more than a year. While there, he began writing Retta's younger sister
in Kansas. Her name is variously given as Rita or Lilly Herrod Davis. Her husband,
Isaac Davis, had died not long before Almond began writing. After Almond went
to Kansas to visit, he married Mrs. Davis. She died about six months later. Almond's
niece Bernice Parker, remembered. Almond then " lived with son Porter near
Los Angeles. On Sunday April 29, 1917, Almond went to church in San Bernardino,
County, California. He returned to Porter's home, complained of indigestion, but
remained cheerful. Finally he said he would take a nap. He died in bed of a heart
attack that afternoon. He was 69. (John, Tom)
Note - As Almond was alive and
listed on the 1920 census this death date is not correct. Possibly the story is
correct with just the wrong year - April 29 also fell on a Sunday in 1923 and
1928.

Phillips Family Tree
Hi Kari,
We have talked before but it has been
awhile. I thought after looking at your web site with the information you have
most all matches exactly as I have it except for a few minor details. I am copy
you some of what I have and you can match it with your files. I have had fun today
trying to sort this family out. John Phillips & I still think my Philomen
and his Thomas H Phillips were brothers but we cannot find the exact link to prove
it yet!!!!!!!!! The Greencastle Banner Graphic, Greencastle (Putman County) Indiana,
