I know that Lydia should be the same person as Emily/Emma but the dates are funny.

On the 1860 census which was taken Sept. 8, 1860 they have Lydia, age 10 months. So she was probably born about December 1859. On the 1870 census, Lydia is 10, which would be right, and they have a son named L. A. Springfield who is age 3, so he was born about 1867. In 1880, Lydia is no longer living at home, and they have a son named Laddie who is age 13. So far everything fits. Then all of a sudden in 1900 they have a daughter named Emily L., age 42, who was born in August 1867. This birthdate is not right for Lydia, who was born about December 1859. It would be a good birthdate for the second child, born about 1867, but he is listed on all previous census records as being a boy. Mom Mary is listed as having 4 births, with 4 surviving children, but they are William, Lydia, Laddie & Jessie, so Lydia was the only girl.

Maybe because she was single they said she was younger than she should have been?? It seems funny that they would be that confused about her age - she is listed as 32 in 1900 and 42 in 1910 so it is not a single year census error
