Message: FREMONT COUNTY.

Both sides of my mother (paternal: Beckham, maternal: Nix) have deep roots in Fremont County. Her father, Charles William Beckham, was born and raised on a ranch in Guffy, not far from Canon City in 1898. He died last August. His mother, Francis Witherspoon Beckham, married Charles Thomas Beckham in Fremont County. She was the daughter of Katherine and Hiram Witherspoon, early homesteaders in Fremont County. My grandmother, Nettie Lucille Nix Beckham, was born in Canon City to George Pierce Nix and Exhilda LaPlant Nix (from Florence, CO). George P. Nix was a former Fremont County Clerk (late 1800's to early 1900's) and was originally from Alabama.

So, my family ties to Fremont County extend back to my great-great grandparents, Katherine (Pigg) and Hiram Witherspoon on down through my grandparents.

I would be happy to share information about them OR even learn more! Several of these relatives are buried in the Canon City cemetery (Nix, Beckham). Katherine and Hiram Witherspoon are buried in a private plot on what was once the Witherspoon Ranch.

--------

NIX, George Pierce. Raised in or near Clayton (Alabama). Family operated a farm or plantation. He was trained as a pharmacist, but moved to Canon City, CO in the late 1800s for health reasons. Married my g.g. grandmother, Exhilda LaPlant. Four children: Corinth "Bud" and Corinne (twins); Nettie Lucille (my grandmother); George Nathan. George P. Nix died at the Mayo Clinic of kidney failure in 1915. I have several pictures and a post card, but don't know much about this family other than stories from my grandmother.
