The Children of Thomas Springfield & Laodicea "Dicey" Langston

1) Unknown Son SpringfieldUnknown Son Springfield was born about 1784 in Laurens Co., SC. He is not named in the Springfield Bible, but there are census records that indicate he was in this family - also based on the frequency of births in this family it would be surprising if Thomas & Dicey were married in January 1783 but did not have a child until May 1786, which is the first child recorded in the Bible. There is a male the right age to be this son, age 6, in the household of Thomas Springfield on the 1790 census of Laurens Co., SC. There is a male the right age to be this son, age 16, on the 1800 census of Greenville, SC. He is not listed with the family on the 1810 census, but he was age 26 then and may have had his own household elsewhere. Unknown Son Springfield died sometime after 1800 and probably before 1843. He is not named as an heir in the will of Thomas Springfield in October 1843.

4) Moses Springfield

Moses Springfield was born on August 14, 1789 in Laurens Co., SC. There is a not male the right age to be Moses, age 11, on the 1800 census of Greenville, SC, but there is an extra male in the "under age 10" category that I can't account for that might be Moses if the Bible record is incorrect and he was born in 1790 instead of 1789. There is a only one male age 16-25 in the household of Th. Springfield on the 1810 census of Greenville, SC; this is either Moses, age 19-21?, Henry, age 18 or Ephraim, age 16. Since Henry is the only one of the 3 that was known to still be alive in 1820, I would guess that it was Henry and not Moses or Ephraim. Moses is not named as an heir in the will of Thomas Springfield in October 1843.

Henry served in the War of 1812 as a sergeant in Austin's Regiment, South Carolina Militia. Henry married Levinia Smith about 1813 in South Carolina. They had 10 children. The family is listed on the 1820 & 1830 censuses of Greenville Co., SC. Henry Springfield died on February 18, 1836 in Traveler's Rest, Greenville Co., SC. The newspaper account of his death states "We understand that Mr. Henry Springfield was frozen to death on the night of the 18th inst., about 12 miles above this place. The weather was very cold, the ground covered with snow, and we regret to add, that the deceased was somewhat intoxicated. He has left a wife and several children to mourn his sudden and unexpected departure.". Henry was age 44 when he died. Levina is living with her children on the 1840 census of Greenville Co., SC with her son Thomas Young Springfield listed as the head of household. Levina Smith Springfield died sometime after 1840, probably before 1850 in Greenville Co., SC.

Neither Ephraim or any children of Ephraim are named as heirs in the will of Thomas Springfield in October 1843.
