Samuel Alexander Mann was born on March 1, 1815 in Logan Co., KY. He was the
son of Robert Morill Mann & Mary Houston.
His parents were from Abbeville, SC, but they emigrated to Logan Co., KY in
1807 and lived there until 1817 when the family emigrated to Randolph Co., IL
to join former neighbors from SC. Samuel settled there and lived there until
his death in 1907. Samuel Alexander Mann married three times - his wives were
Nancy Pressley, Henrietta Bratney, and Sarah Pillers Crozier.
Nancy Pressley was born on December 17, 1815 in Ohio. She was the daughter of
Robert Pressly & Elizabeth Clark
Henrietta Bratney was born on February 28, 1825 in Illinois. She was the
daughter of Joseph Bratney & Eleanor Beattie
Sarah Pillers was born on November 12, 1812 in Randolph Co., IL. She was
the daughter of John B. Pillers and Margaret "Peggy" Gaston. She
had been previously married to James Thompson & Samuel Crozier before marrying
Samuel Alexander Mann.
THE FAMILIES OF SAMUEL ALEXANDER MANN
First marriage:
| Samuel Alexander Mann & Nancy Pressley | Samuel Alexander Mann married Nancy Pressley
on August 20, 1835 in Randolph Co., IL and they had 7 children. (I have
also seen her last name spelled Pressly). At the time of their marriage,
Alexander was age 20 and Nancy was age 19. The family is listed on the 1840
census of Randolph Co., IL. A Randolph Co., IL history states that Nancy
and 3 of their daughters died in a cholera epidemic in 1849. Nancy was
age 34 when she died - I am not sure who the third daughter is who died
in 1849 as I only know of two. Possibly I have the wrong death date for
daughter Mary L. Mann. On the 1850 census of Twp 5S Range 7W Randolph Co.,
IL, Alexander and 4 of his children, living with his parents with his father,
Robert M. Mann, listed as head of household. Notes for Samuel Alexander Mann Notes for Nancy Presley |
Children of Samuel A. Mann & Nancy Presley:
| John Robert Mann | John Robert Mann was born on Nov. 11, 1836 in Randolph Co., IL. He is living with his parents on the 1840 census of Randolph Co., IL. He is listed as Robert, age 12, on the 1850 census of Twp 5S Range 7W Randolph Co., IL with his grandparents, father & siblings. He is listed as John, age 24, on the 1860 census of Randolph Co., IL, living at home with his father, stepmother, grandmother & siblings. I don't know when or where John Robert Mann died. An article on Samuel Mann written in 1875 said that his three surviving children from his first marriage were married, had families, and were living in Lawrence Co., MO, so maybe John emigrated there. In 1880 I find a Robert H. Mann who is age 43 in St. Louis, MO, born IL with father born in KY and mother born in SC; it is possible that this may be John Robert, but it is not confirmed. | |
| Alexander H.Mann | Alexander Harvey Mann was born Dec. 28, 1837 in IL. He is living with his parents on the 1840 census of Randolph Co., IL. He is listed as age 10 on the 1850 census of Twp 5S Range 7W Randolph Co., IL with his grandparents, father & siblings. 1870 census of Twp 5 Range 6 W, Randolph Co., IL. John & Elizabeth
emigrated from Illinois to Missouri sometime between 1870 to 1875. They
are listed on the 1880 census of Mt. Vernon, Lawrence Co., MO & on

occupation is listed as farmer, and in 1900 his occupation is listed as
Blacksmith. John died sometime between 1910 to 1920. Elizabeth is listed
as Lizzie N. Patterson, widowed, on the 1910 & 1920 censuses of Aurora,
Lawrence Co., MO. I do not find Elizabeth in 1930. I think Elizabeth
Mann Patterson died between 1920 to 1930 in Lawrence Co., MO. |

Samuel A. Mann's second marriage:
| Samuel A. Mann & Henrietta Bratney | Samuel Mann married Henrietta Bratney on March 21, 1855 in Randolph Co., IL and they had 3 children. Excerpt from the 1875 Atlas of Randolph Co., IL: "His (Samuel A. Mann's) first wife died in 1849, and Mr. Mann was again married in March, 1855, to Henrietta Bratney. A short time before his father's death he bought the interest of the other heirs, and obtained entire possession of the homestead property. His second wife died in 1861." The family is on the 1860 census of Twp 5S Range 7W, Randolph Co., IL. Henrietta Bratney Mann died on March 20, 1862 in Randolph Co., IL. Her death is listed in a Randolph County Illinois history book as being 1861, but as her last child was born in December 1861 I think it is probably 1862. (The history book also states that Samuel & Henrietta married in 1855, but the actual marriage record and Illinois State marriage records state that it was 1854.) |
The children of Samuel A. Mann & Henrietta Bratney:
| Millard Mann | Millard Joseph Mann was born May 23, 1857 in Randolph
Co., IL. He is listed as age 6 with his parents, grandmother and siblings
on the 1860 census of Randolph Co. IL. He is listed as Willard Mann, age
14, with his parents in 1870. I have found no record that indicates that
Millard ever married. He is possibly the J. C. Mann, age 23, who is working
as a laborer on the farm of J. H. Beattie on the 1880 census of Evansville,
Randolph Co., IL. He is listed as Millard J. Mann, age 43, on the 1900 census
of Central Precinct, Randolph Co., IL. He is listed as Millard Mann, age
52, a laborer on the farm of James Wood on the 1910 census of Central Precinct,

1880 census of Randolph Co., IL. Edward married Minnie Lorena Kelly,
on August 31, 1887 and they had 8 children. I assume they were married in
Illinois, but I have not found them on the Illinois state index of marriages
through 1900. The family is listed under the name Everet E. Mann on the
1900 census of Central Pct, Randolph Co., IL; at that time his widowed father
is living with them. They are listed under the name Edward Mann on the 1910
census of Coulterville Pct, Randolph Co., IL. Minnie Kelly Mann died on
Feb. 19, 1912 in Coulterville, Randolph Co., IL. Edward Everett Mann
