PHILLIPS FAMILY RECORDS - Records I have for the Phillips ancestors of Bessie "Betty" Belle Dyer

Research of John Phillips **** These papers are excerpts of some of the extensive research by John Phillips, formerly of Cabin John, MD and now living in Kathleen, GA. John has written several books on Thomas H. Phillips, and has been researching this line for over 30 years. John's work is copyrighted, posted here with permission from the author given March 2005.
Phillips Bible Records **** Excellent list by John Phillips of Bible, family letters, and other documents on family of Thomas H. Phillips and related families
1790 Census Phillips 1790

Phillips households in Rowan Co., NC in 1790 were: Jessey Phillips, Mary Phillips, Reuben Phillips & 3 households headed by John Phillips
Phillips households in Stokes Co., NC in 1790 were : John Phillips, Joseph Phillips & Richard Phillips
Thomas H. Phillips was born in 1794 in North Carolina. He later married Martha Pitts in Rowan Co., NC and they lived in Stokes Co., NC. As Martha's family was from Stokes Co, and they married in Rowan Co, it may be an indicator that Thomas' family was from Rowan. There is also a *possibility* that his father (or grandfather?) may have been named John since he named his first son John Thomas.

Other households listed are headed by John Philips, Cadwallader Pitts, David Philips, Aaron Philips, Isaac Pitts, & Samuel Phillips. Thomas Philips is listed as owning 45 acres of land. It is not confirmed that this is the Thomas H. Phillips who married Martha Pitts in 1816, but I believe it is and all facts known support this being the correct family. The year they appear on tax records is the same as their year of marriage, numbers on the 1820 census exactly fit the family, and the year they left Stokes Co., NC also fits. Also Martha Pitts is either the daughter of Samuel or Isaac Pitts, who were brothers who both lived in Stokes Co., NC.
