Their last name has been spelled various ways on records, and may have been Holston or Holstein. The family is listed on the 1830 & 1840 censuses of Grainger Co., TN. They moved from Tennessee to Missouri about 1843, and they are listed on the 1850 census of Saline Twp., St. Genevieve Co., MO. The family moved from St. Genevieve County to Laclede Co., MO about 1858, and they are listed on the 1860 census of Hooker Twp., Laclede Co., MO. Peter Hulstine died sometime between 1860 to 1870, probably in Laclede Co., MO. Sallie is listed on the 1870 census of Hooker Twp., Laclede Co., MO living with her daughter Margaret and next door to the household of Samuel & Sarah (Hulstine) McGuire. I have not been able to find Sallie on the 1880 census. Sarah "Sallie" Haney Hulstine died sometime after 1870, and probably before 1880 in MO.

Margaret HulstineMargaret Hulstine was born about 1831 in Grainger Co., TN. Her family is listed on the 1840 census of Grainger Co., TN. Her parents moved from TN to MO about 1843, and she is listed with them at age 19 on the 1850 census of Saline Twp., St. Genevieve Co., MO. The family moved from St. Genevieve County to Laclede Co., MO about 1858, and she is listed with them on the 1860 census of Hooker Twp., Laclede Co., MO. Her father died sometime between 1860 to 1870, and Margaret is listed with her widowed mother on the 1870 census of Hooker Twp., Laclede Co., MO in the household of Samuel & Sarah (Hulstine) McGuire. Her mother probably died between 1870 to 1880, and Margaret is listed on the 1880 census of Bowen, Madison Co., Arkansas living with Marcus & Amanda (Hulstine) Spencer. I have not found any indication at this time that Margaret ever married. Margaret Hulstine died sometime after 1880, possibly in Arkansas.

Betsy HulstineElizabeth "Betsy" Hulstine was born about 1834 in Grainger Co, TN. Her family is listed on the 1840 census of Grainger Co., TN. Her parents moved from TN to MO about 1843, and she is listed with them at age 16 on the 1850 census of Saline Twp., St. Genevieve Co., MO. Betsy married William Riley Looney on October 05, 1856 in St. Genevieve Co., MO and they had 3 children. The family is listed on the 1860 census of Warren, Camden, Missouri. William Riley enlisted in the Home Guard for the Confederacy as a private on July 10, 1861. He was discharged on December 20, 1861 for illness (chronic diarrhea and flux). The family is listed on the 1870 censuses of Warren, Camden Co., MO. They are listed on the 1880 census of Hooker, Laclede Co., MO with James Casteel, who married their daughter Mary that same year. I believe that Elizabeth Hulstine Looney died between 1880-1900 in Missouri or Oklahoma. I have information that she died in May 1902 in Pleasant Hope, Polk Co., MO, but I have not found her on the 1900 census at this time and her husband Riley was living in Leon, OK and listed as widowed in 1900. I have not found William Riley on the 1910 census, but pension documents place him in Pleasant Hope, Polk, Missouri in 1911. On August 14, 1916, William Riley Looney was married second to Mrs. Mary Alexander in Eldridge, Laclede, Missouri. William Riley Looney died on July 10, 1917 in Eldridge, Laclede Co., MO.

William HulstineWilliam Hulstine was born about 1836 in Grainger Co., TN. His parents moved from TN to MO about 1843, and he is listed with them at age 14 on the 1850 census of Saline Twp., St. Genevieve Co., MO. William married Nancy Ann Hoket on June 23, 1857 in St. Genevieve Co., MO and they had 7 children. Based on birthplaces of their children they moved from MO to KY sometime between 1858 to 1861. I have not found them on the 1860 census at this time. The family is listed on the 1870 of census Dist 6, Subdivision 166, Providence PO, Webster Co., KY. They are listed on the 1880 census of Caseyville, Union Co., KY. William married Margaret Treat Patten Rogers in Pope Co., Arkansas in 1883. His son Harrison David Hulstine married a Mrs. Margaret Hulstine in November of the same year in Johnson Co., Arkansas. On the 1890 Special Veteran's Census of Lawrence Co., MO there is a William Hulstin, Private, Co., G., Reg. 29, MO Inf. who enlisted at Marionville, Lawrence Co., MO and served in the Union Army from 1 Nov. 1862 to 10 Aug. 1863; I do not know if it is this William Hulstine for sure. William Hulstine died sometime after 1883, but I don't know where.

Amanda HulstineAmanda Hulstine was born about 1837 in Grainger Co., TN. Her family is listed on the 1840 census of Grainger Co., TN. Her parents moved from TN to MO about 1843, and she is listed with them at age 13 on the 1850 census of Saline Twp., St. Genevieve Co., MO. Her parents moved from St. Genevieve County to Laclede Co., MO about 1858, and she is listed with them at age 23 on the 1860 census of Hooker Twp., Laclede Co., MO. Amanda married Marcus Spence on October 09, 1861 in Laclede Co., MO and they had 5 children. I have also seen his name listed as Mark Spencer, but he is listed as Marcus Spence on all of the census records I have found for him at this time. Marcus & Amanda moved from Laclede County to Pettis County MO sometime between 1860 to 1870, and the family is listed on the 1870 census of Heath's Creek Twp., Pettis Co., MO. They moved from Missouri to Arkansas sometime between 1877 to 1880, and they are listed on the 1880 census of Bowen, Madison, AR. I have not found Amanda on the 1900 census at this time. Amanda Hulstine Spence died sometime after 1880, probably in Arkanasas, but that is not for sure.

Her tombstone says she was born August 6, 1836, but census records are more consistent with an 1838 birth year. Her family is listed on the 1840 census of Grainger Co., TN. Her parents moved from TN to MO about 1843, and she is listed with them at age 11 on the 1850 census of Saline Twp., St. Genevieve Co., MO. Her parents moved from St. Genevieve County to Laclede Co., MO about 1858. Mary married John Peter McGuire on August 11, 1859 in Laclede Co., MO. John's brother Samuel had married Mary's sister Sarah in 1858. John & Mary had 5 children. The family is listed on the 1860 census of Adair Twp., Camden Co., MO. They are listed on the 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 & 1920 censuses of Warren, Camden Co., MO. Mary Painter Hulstine McGuire died on March 29, 1923 in Warren Twp., Camden Co., MO. John died on March 01, 1931 in Warren, Camden Co., MO. John & Mary are buried in the Mt. Horeb Cemetery, Decaturville, Camden, Missouri.

Sarah C. Hulstine was born about 1841 in Grainger Co., TN. Her parents moved from TN to MO about 1843, and she is listed with them at age 9 on the 1850 census of Saline Twp., St. Genevieve Co., MO. Her parents moved from St. Genevieve County to Laclede Co., MO about 1858, and Sarah married Samuel Tillman McGuire on August 05, 1858 in Laclede Co., MO. Samuel's brother John married Sarah's sister Mary in 1859. Samuel & Sarah had at least 6 children. The family is listed on the 1860 census of Warren, Camden Co., MO. They are listed on the 1870 census of Hooker Twp., Laclede Co., MO, with Sarah's mother & sister Margaret living next to them. They are listed on the 1880 census of Marionville, Lawrence, MO. Samuel died in 1890 in Camden, Missouri. I have not found Sarah on the 1900 census at this time. Sarah C. Hulstine McGuire died sometime after 1880, probably in MO but I'm not sure.

Nancy Hulstine

Nancy Hulstine was born on June 26, 1843 in Grainger Co., TN. Her parents moved from TN to MO about 1843, and she is listed with them at age 7 on the 1850 census of Saline Twp., St. Genevieve Co., MO. Nancy married Joseph Moore on December 27, 1861 in Camden, MO. They settled in Lawrence Co., MO, and they had 11 children, 8 of whom lived to adulthood. Joseph pension files states that after he was discharged from the Home Guard in Sept of 1861 that he lived in Lawrence Co., MO, except for about 7 years; that he lived in Greene Co., MO for about 5 years (pension file says 1869-1872, but Joseph & Nancy are listed on the 1870 census of Mt. Vernon, Lawrence Co., MO), then they returned for a few months to Lawrence County, and then they lived 2 years in Marion Co., Arkansas. In 1874 or 1875 they returned to Lawrence Co., MO where they remained until their deaths. The family is on the 1880 census of Lincoln, Lawrence Co., MO, and on the 1900 & 1910 censuses of Mt. Vernon, Lawrence Co., MO. Joseph & Nancy were Baptists, and were charter members of the Summit Church in Mt. Vernon. Both Joseph & Nancy died in the spring of 1919, Joseph in January and Nancy in March. They are buried in Summit Cemetery in Lawrence Co., MO.

Samuel HulstineSamuel Hulstine was born about 1845 in St. Genevieve Co., MO. He is listed with his parents at age 6 on the 1850 census of Saline Twp., St. Genevieve Co., MO. His parents moved from St. Genevieve County to Laclede Co., MO about 1858, and he is listed with them at age 14 on the 1860 census of Hooker Twp., Laclede Co., MO. Samuel enlisted on January 18, 1862 in Laclede Co., Missouri in the Union Army in the Civil War. The Muster Roll of December 31, 1862 states he was under arrest and confined at Springfield, Missouri. Samuel married Dorinda Rodgers on June 28, 1868, probably in Laclede Co., MO. They had 5 children. The family is listed on the 1870 census of Boon Twp., Douglas Co., MO. Samuel Hulstine and his young son Clairborne Hulstine died in an accident when their wagon overturned in December, 1878, unknown location. Dorinda and the children are living with her parents on the 1880 United States Census Prairie, Newton, Arkansas.
