John Almond Phillips & Viola Jane Whitsett

John Almond Phillips married Viola Jane "Ola" Whitsett on November 11, 1874 in Scott Co., IN and they had 3 children. The family is listed on the 1880 census of Johnson, Scott Co., IN. Almond, Viola & both of Almond's parents all contracted typhoid in November 1881, and Almond was the only one who survived it. At that time the children were age 9 months to 5 years. Viola is buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Austin, Scott, Indiana. John Almond married twice after Viola died, and for more information on those marriages see below. Her mother died in November 1881 when she was age 5, and her father remarried in June 1882 when she was age 6. Flora married Homer Odem "Oda" Baxter about 1894, and they had 2 children. The family is listed on the 1900 1910 censuses of Brown, Hendricks Co., IN. On both the 1900 & 1910 censuses Flora is listed as having 2 births & 2 surviving children. The family is listed on the 1920 & 1930 censuses of Lincoln Twp., Brownsburg Town, Hendricks Co., IN. Homer's occupation is listed as farmer in 1900, farm labor in 1910, fence builder in 1920 & carpenter/crater for a gas tank manufacturer in 1930. Flora's occupation in 1930 was listed as Saleslady, Retail Dry Goods. Flora Glenn Phillips Baxter died on Sept. 21, 1941 Brownsburg, Hendricks Co., IN. Odem died on Feb. 9, 1943 in Speedway, IN.

Homer Charles PhillipsHomer Charles Phillips was born on July 21, 1878 in Scott Co., IN. He is listed as Charley, age 2, with his parents on the 1880 census of Johnson, Scott Co., IN. Homer's mother died in November 1881 when he was age 3, and his father remarried in June 1882, one month before Homer turned age 4. He is listed as Homer C., age 21, with his father & stepmother on the 1900 census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN. He is listed at age 31, working on a dairy farm on the 1910 census of Wilmington, Los Angeles Co., California - his brother Porter is living in Los Angeles with his family in 1910 also. Homer apparently did not stay there long before returning to Indiana. Homer married Lottie May Garner South on June 29, 1912 in Danville, Hendricks Co., IN. (Lottie had previously been married to George Emmet South on Nov. 28, 1900 in Hendricks Co, IN and had one child. Emmet died in 1908) Homer & Lottie had 3 children. The family is listed on the 1920 & 1930 censuses of Lincoln Twp., Brownsburg Town, Hendricks Co., IN. In 1920 Homer's occupation is listed as Laborer, Presto-Lite (?) and in 1930 his occupation is proprietor, cement block manufacturing. Lottie died on November 30, 1950. Homer Charles Phillips died on Dec. 5, 1957 in Arizona. He is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Brownsburg, Hendricks County, Indiana.

He is listed as Porter H., age 20, with his father and stepmother on the 1900 census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN. Porter married Ovalina L. Nash on May 10, 1903 in Hendricks Co., IN and they had 3 children. Based on birth places of their children the family moved from Indiana to California about 1909, and they are listed on the 1910 census of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA with Porter's occupation listed as Driver, Music Store. They are listed on the 1920 census of Burbank, Los Angeles Co., CA with Porter's occupation listed as Order Clerk, Burbank Bros. They are listed on the 1930 census of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA with Porter's occupation listed as Manager, Furniture Store. Porter Harry Phillips died on May 30, 1959 in Los Angeles Co., CA. Ovalina died on April 11, 1964.

John Almond Phillips & Lauretta Byron HarrodAlmond married second Lauretta Byron Harrod on June 10, 1882 in Scott Co., IN and they had one son. The family is listed on the 1900 census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN and on the 1910 census of Lincoln, Hendricks, Co., IN. In 1913, Almond & Retta decided to join two of the sons who had moved to the Los Angeles area, but Retta became ill and died shortly after arriving there. Lauretta died on April 17, 1913 in California.

Leverne H. PhillipsLeverne Harrod Phillips was born on April 2, 1889 in Indiana. He is listed at age 11 with his parents on the 1900 census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN. He is listed with his parents at age 21 on the 1910 census of Lincoln Twp., Brownsburg Town, Hendricks Co., IN. Leverne married Ruth Edwina Bell in October 1911 and they had one daughter. Leverne & Ruth were second cousins - their grandmothers were Courtney sisters. Leverne & Ruth are listed on the 1920 census of Ladd Hill, Clackamas Co., Oregon; at that time Leverne's widowed father Almond was living with them. I have not found Leverne for sure in 1930, but family story is that he and Ruth separated. There is a Verne P. Phillips, age 42, born US with both parents born in Oregon who is listed on the 1930 census of Chico, Butte Co., CA with wife Myrtle and 3 step-children last name Burns who may be him. Leverne Phillips died on October 1, 1963 in San Luis Obispo Co., CA. Ruth Edwina Bell Phillips died on August 25, 1987 in Poway, San Diego Co., California.

John Almond Phillips & Lillie May Harrod DavisAfter Lauretta's death, Almond began writing her widowed sister Lillie Harrod Davis. John A. Phillips is listed as Father in the household of married son Leverne on the 1920 census of Ladd Hill, Clackamas Co., Oregon, and Lillie Davis, widowed, is listed on the 1920 census of Osceola Co., Florida. John Almond & Lillie married in December 1920 in Florida.There is a photo of Lillie and Almond at their boarding house in Tela, which is in Florida. Lillie May Harrod Davis Phillips died on June 29, 1921 in St. Cloud, Osceola, Florida. According to family story, Almond went to live with his son Porter in Los Angeles. Family story is that came home from church and took a nap, and died in his sleep after complaining earlier of indigestion. An article in a the Scottsburg Chronicle (Scott County) Indiana on May 26, 1926 states: "Mrs. Mary Christie has received word of the death of her brother, Almond Phillips, at Los Angeles, Calif., where he had resided the past few years with his son, Porter. He was well known in this county, where he had spent most of his life." According to Ken Phillips' book, Almond died on April 29, 1917, but the year is incorrect and I'm not sure about the rest of the date. John Almond Phillips died in 1926 in Los Angeles Co., California.
