THE FAMILY OF FREDERICK WHITTENBURG & MARGARET BENSON
| Frederick Whittenburg & Margaret Benson | Frederick Whittenburg
& Margaret Benson were married on February 19, 1764 in Rowan Co., North Carolina.
They had at least 10 children, 4 sons and 6 daughters. The family lived in
Rowan Co., North Carolina until 1781, then moved about 1783 to Greene Co., Tennessee.
Frederick wrote his will in 1804, naming ten of his children, and specifying the
birth order of the four sons. The last name on records and descendants for this
family has also been spelled WHITTENBERG. Frederick Whittenburg died on October
24, 1804 in Greene Co., Tennessee. Margaret Benson Whittenburg died in 1829 in
Greene Co., Tennessee. Notes for Frederick Whittenburg Transcript of will of Frederick Whittenburg |
The Children of Frederick Whittenburg & Margaret Benson:
| Susanna Whittenburg | Susanna Whittenburg was born about 1768 in
North Carolina. Her parents moved from Rowan Co., North Carolina to Greene
Co., Tennessee about 1783, when Susanna was about age 15. She is listed as daughter
Susana Whittenberg in the will of Frederick Whittenburg, written on October 22,
1804. There was a Susanna Whittenburg who married Christopher Brooks on
February 19, 1824 in Greene Co., Tennessee, but online trees state that this Christopher
was born about 1797, and in 1824 Susanna (daughter of Frederick) was about age
56. There is a Christopher Brooks who married Susanna's sister Sarah in 1806.
Some internet trees also list February 19, 1824 as being Susanna's death date.
Susanna Whittenburg Brooks died sometime about or after 1824, probably in Greene
Co., Tennessee. Notes for Susanna Whittenburg Brooks
| Rachel Whittenburg | Rachel Whittenburg was born about 1769 in North
Carolina. Her parents moved from Rowan Co., North Carolina to Greene Co.,
Tennessee about 1783, when Rachel was about age 14. She is listed as daughter
Rachel Whittenberg in the will of Frederick Whittenburg, written on October 22,
1804. One online tree states that Rachel married John Gallion/Galyon in 1783 in
North Carolina, and that she died on January 20, 1817 in Grainger Co., Tennessee.
I question this marriage as she was still listed as "Rachel Whittenburg"
in 1804 when her father wrote his will, and her married sisters were listed under
their married names in the same document. There is also a marriage record of a
Rachel Whittenburg to Matthew Whittenburg on January 20, 1817 in Greene Co., Tennessee;
if it is this Rachel she would have been age 48 at the time of the marriage. There
is also a Racheal Whitenburg who married Thomas Griffis on December 23, 1837 in
Greene Co., Missouri, but this is the Rachel who is daughter of Peter Whittenburg,
and niece of Rachel born 1769. (There is also a record of a marriage in Greene
Co., Missouri for Thomas Griffie and Racheal Whitenburg on March 5, 1838). Rachel
Whittenburg died sometime after October 22, 1804, but I'm not exactly sure when.

| Elizabeth Whittenburg | Elizabeth Whittenburg was born on December
10, 1770 in Rowan Co., North Carolina. If birthdates I have for this family
are correct, she was twin of Margaret Whittenburg. Her parents moved from Rowan
Co., North Carolina to Greene Co., Tennessee about 1783, when Elizabeth was about
age 13. Elizabeth married Rev. Isaiah Harrison on January 6, 1800 in Greene
Co., TN. Rev. Harrison was a widower with at least 7 children, and he and Elizabeth
had at least 9 more children. She is listed as daughter Mrs. Elizabeth
Harrison in the will of Frederick Whittenburg, written on October 22, 1804. In
1808, Isaiah Harrison deeded land for the Quaker meetinghouse in Greene Co., TN
to George Wells, Stephen Brooks, John Kelly Sr., John Kelly Jr., and John Whittenberg
as trustees in trust. Isaiah is mentioned as representing the Maryville Branch
of Quakers and the Hickory Valley Branch at an 1822 convention. The Quaker movement
was large but of short life, and stronger around Greeneville. This convention
had to do with abolition of slavery. James Jones was president. Isaiah Harrison
is listed as a head of household on the 1830 census of Greene Co., TN. Some websites
have stated that Isaiah had 2 slaves on this census, but I did not find this to
be true. Elizabeth Whitteburg Harrison died in 1838 in Greene Co., TN .
She is buried in the Harrison Cemetery, Greene Co., TN. After her death Isaiah
remarried Mary Jones in 1839.

& Sarah are listed on the October 4, 1850 census of Rhea, Tennessee. I do
not find either of them on the 1860 census for Rhea, Tennessee. Records for John
& his children use the spelling Whittenberg. John Alden Whittenburg/Whittenberg
died sometime after 1850, and probably before 1860 in Rhea Co., Tennessee.
