Notes for Robert Dye

Robert was age 1 when his father (Lawrence Dye) died in 1879. His mother remarried in 1880 and divorced and remarried again in 1883. She died about 1891, when Robert was about age 13. I don't know if Robert lived with his mother or with other relatives during this time.

Hi Joyce,

I have Lawrence Dye's pension papers which dispute the above info in several areas. There is a stack of them, so will try to quote the pertinent ones - if you want more I can send you copies. The pension papers were filed in 1888 on behalf of Lawrence's minor (under age 16) children after his death, and as far as I can tell Robert F. Dye was one of these children.

There is a statement from Dr. A.M.C. Hawes that he was the physician who treated Lawrence Dye up until his death, that he did not keep any records, including a death certificate because he was treating Lawrence for free due to his extreme poverty. Date of death on all of these pension papers is listed as Sept. 7, 1879. Lawrence died from heart problems complicated by chronic diarrhea that he picked up in the Civil War - I plan to put together an email about his experiences in the war at a later date for my input on Dye's in the Civil War, so won't go into that part now.

The minor children listed on the pension papers are Ruvilla & Cloyd (Twins, b. January 6, 1872), Thomas C. (b.June 10, 1876), and Robert P.(b. June 21, 1878). Their mother is listed as the former Delilah Creitzer, and another statement is submitted by A.H. Gorman stating that he knows Delilah well, and that she was married 5 times - first to John Ritter, after his death to John Creitzer, after his death to Lawrence Dye, after his death to J. W. Lovey (sp? could be Laney), after divorce from him she married Henry Ball. A.H. Gorman states that Delilah died and he attended her funeral, but "can't fix the date". I have been given info by another researcher that Delilah's maiden name was Mills, but would need to confirm that. In 1888 when these pension papers were filed, the guardian of the minor children was David Sconce, his wife Elizabeth was Lawrence's daughter from his first marriage to Mary Ann Van Trease. David Sconce also signed a paper stating that the children's mother was Delilah Creitzer, and that the above were their dates of birth.

I have a copy of a telegram dated Oct. 7, 1928 from Robert F. Dye of 205 First St. South, Montevideo, MN to the Pension Bureau asking for the Civil War service of Lawrence Dye "who served with the Illinois troops during the Civil War, giving names of his parents with dates, birth place, etc. if that data is available. This information is wanted to complete family records and family history." I have a copy of a reply to Robert F. Dye that was written Dec. 18, 1928 by Winfield Scott, Commissioner of the Widow Division giving Lawrence's enlistment info and stating that "no claim for pension was ever filed by this soldier, and the names of his parents and other information requested by you is not of record in this Bureau."

So, just to set the record to my personal opinion of "straight" - :) - Robert F. Dye was the son of Lawrence Dye and Delilah Mills-Ritter-Creitzer. Lawrence was b. abt 1807, and he died Sept. 7, 1879 when Robert was about 1 year of age. Lawrence did have a brother named Nehemiah whose wife was the former Rebecca Ellen Chandler, so maybe that is where Robert got the name Rebecca from. Lawrence's parents (Robert F.'s grandparents) were Peter & Abigail Dye - I have lots of circumstantial evidence for this and recently got an email from Rae Seeman confirming that she has seen Bible records that listed Peter & Abigails children, including Lawrence, Nehemiah and others - unfortunately the location of that Bible is now unknown, which is also a topic for another email. Peter was Kenneth & Jane (Vanderbeck) Dye's son and Abigail was William & Phoebe (Mounteer) Dye's daughter - Kenneth & William were both sons of William Dye & Margaret Salter.

So that is Robert F. Dye's lineage as as far as I know it. I don't think he knew for sure who his ancestors were. I know how that feels on some of my own lines!

Hope this is not too confusing,

Kari
