The high waters, of Monday, claimed a victim in Mercer County, ISOM HOLMES, ninety-six years old, was drowned in the back waters of Muddy Creek, near the home of RICH WIGGINS, twelve miles northwest of this city. His cane, lying on the ground nearby, led to his discovery. He had been in the water but a short time.
MR. HOLMES had been staying with his daughter, MRS. RICH WIGGINS. He left the house Monday evening for a walk about the place. He had been gone but a little while when members of the family started a search for him. On the ground probably l50 yards from the house they saw his cane on the ground near the water that had backed up from the creek. Only a short distance from the bank his body was found. It is supposed that he went to look at the water and being quite feeble, fell in and was unable to get out.
HOLMES was an old resident of this county. Until his retirement from active business
affairs some seven years ago, he was a progressive farmer and stock raiser. He
was born at Macklenburg, N.C., October l6, l8l9. In l860 he came to Mercer County
where he since resided. In l862, he married ELIZABETH MORIN. He is survived by
nine children--DANIEL, HARVEY, WILLIAM, FRANK, BENJAMIN, MARY, FLORENCE, RACHEL
and BERTHA. He was a soldier in the Civil War, being a member of
Co. E, l2th Mo. Volunteer Cavalry, enlisting in l863 and serving until the close of the war. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
