Subject: Goodin Family Info

I will comment as I run across things--right now Ebenezer's Military & Pension records
File Designation: (Gooden) (Goodwin) Ebenezer SC-215-773 Co. K 10 KS. INF.
Note: all signatures are an X and witnessed--Evidently, he could not read and write.

Do you know if anyone has documentation for the marriage date for Ebenezer & Jane? I have "Ebenezer GOODIN married Jane Fuson, July 20, 1834, by Rev. William S. Hickey; John Fuson, bondsman. HH Fuson, History of Bell Co., KY" with additional notes "Some records state 1835. RCGS in Atwood, KS lists as July 22, 1834"
I have the underlined information which I found in Knox Co. Ky Marriages DAR 1800-1850

Quoting from Ebenezer's pension files. This page (certificate No. 215773) has 3 stamps--June 16, June 17, June 20, all in 1899:
1st question--Are you married?
"No, but have been to Jane Fuson"
2nd question--Where, when, and by whom were you married?
"July 22, 1834. by Wm. Hicky. on Greasy Creek. Knox Co Ky"
3rd question--What record of marriage exists?
"The certifi --- of Wm. Hicky & Records in Knos Co. Court
4th question--Were you previously married?
5th question--Have you any children living? If so, please state their names and dates of birth.
'Yes. I have raised 14 children the oldest Mary Goodin born 26th July 1836 the Baby born 1860 on 26th July Raised 4 boys 10 Girls average between their ages 10 to 11 months Jas M Goodin before he was 17 went into Civil War son Tom went in before he was 15 I went in 1861 on my birthday Aug 8, 1861"

From an affidavit:
Since my discharge from said service on the "31st" day of "May 1863" , I have resided in "Mercer Co Mo to 1875, then removed to Gainsville Cook Co Texas, removed to Mercer Co Mo in the fall of 1879 and have lived here since" and my occupation has been that of a "farmer"

From another legal form dated Bivenber 28, 1879:
personal description---age 65, height 5ft 4in, complexion light, hair gray, eyes blue

From Certificate of Disability for Discharge dated May 31, 1863
born Knox county in the state of Kentucky, is forty-eight years of age, five feet four inches high, florid complexion, blue eyes, black hair, and by occupation when enlisted a farmer

US Pension Agency-- last pension payment of $30 was Aug 4, 1901--due to death of Ebenezer Gooden

I have first child Mary born July 26, 1835 and you have 1836. I have that she died in Bonham, FanninCo., Tx. Husband Henry Campbell was born about 1831, not in 1850. He is age 39 in 1870, and age 51 in 1880. The date you have for his birthdate is the one I have for their marriage date. I don't find Henry after 1880 so your 1881 death date is probably ok. I did not have second husband Sheets, so added him in.

Info from Mrs Hamilton gives marriage date of Oct 4, 1850 in Knox Co. KY--Henry Campbell born Oct 13, 1831 in Knox Co. Ky & died Aug 8, 1881 in Kaufman, Kaufman, Texas

Subject: Re: Goodin

Unfortunately, we need an 1890's census. Well, that won't happen, lol.

Jennie is on the 1910 census, Oklahoma, Oklahoma County, Springer 308 A, with husband Benjamin F. Strader. Her daughter Gladys O. Gillette, age 15 is listed, too. I looked just a little bit for Jennie Gillette and Gladys Gillette on the 1900 Arkansas census index, but didn't find anything. I suppose it might take some painstaking searching page by page. I have never found Jennie on any other census. It is true that some people were missed. I suppose at times, families were in transit, on the trail in their wagons, etc. so didn't get on the census.

That 1910 census was a big help to me. Down the page you will find James H. McEwen and wife, Anna Mae McEwen. Anna Mae was Jennie's daughter from the Denys marriage. I think this was Jennie's first marriage (Denys), then Gillette the second, then Strader the third, even tho the 1910 census says 2nd marriage. The fourth marriage to "a Leutjer" is the one I question. I do think she married a 4th time, but I am skeptical about the surname. It will take creative "spelling thinking" which may be a waste of time.
James and Anna Mae McEwen are on 1920 and 1930 census - same area.

Benjamin Strader is buried in IOOF cemetery in Jones, Oklahoma. So are Anna Mae, James and their son Benjamin McEwen. Also, Leo Paul Denys (b. 1883 d. 1957) is buried there. I am 99.99% sure he is Anna Mae's brother - it all fits. (like both said their father was born in Belgium and mother in Missouri.)

James H. McEwen's ancestry is posted on His father was Emmit Cornelius Doak McEwen if you want to check it out. The McEwens moved from Kansas to Oklahoma.

I think James and Anna Mae probably got married in Oklahoma County in 1904. I will check that out Tuesday. I am reluctant to go get Leo Paul Deny's death certificate as they cost $10 since I am not sure he died in Oklahoma. I might spring for it, though, just in the chance his father's full name is on it. He lived in California for a time. I couldn't find him on the death index, however.

Our excellent historical society maintains a vast newspaper archives. I am going to check out articles for that time period. You know how these little newspapers put in every little tidbit of gossip or news in their publications, so I am pretty sure I will find something - maybe about Benjamin's death if he died in Oklahoma, which I think he did. He was 73 on that 1910 census and I can't find him on the 1920. (or Jenny for that matter.) The historical society has moved to a magnificent new building. Unfortunately, all the films, books, records, etc. are in the process of being moved and not available until April 1st.

Spring break is almost here, so I am busy preparing for my daughter's visit. It will be probably after March 20th before I get back on this.

I will keep you posted on my efforts - thanks for your help.

Subject: a Jennie BINGO!

Found Jennie on 1920 census. I decided to search Oklahoma only. Instead of putting in a surname in the search, I just put Jennie with her birthyear, birthplace, etc. It came right up. The last name is Luetjer. I was putting Leutjer before. Seems like the soundex would have caught it anyway, but it didn't. At least we know about her last marriage now. (just need a date to be complete)

1920, Boone Twp, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, page 68 B, line 52 (top of page)
Fred H. Luetjer, 58 born Hanover, Germany
Jennie Luetjer, 59 born Missouri

Fred is also on the 1930 census, same place with another wife, so Jennie's death year is probably what I was told, 1924. I don't have the day or month yet. I was told she is buried in the cemetery in Wheatland, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. I might try to go out there on Memorial weekend to see if the death date is on a headstone.

Subject: Jennie Goodin/Denys, etc.

I finally made it out to Wheatland, Oklahoma to look for Jenny's grave. The cemetery is called Pleasant Valley Cemetery and located southwest of Oklahoma City in Wheatland, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma.

Even though it was Memorial Day weekend, no one was at the cemetery to direct persons looking for grave sites. It took a while, but I did find Jenny's as well as her 4th husband's and another one of his wives. Fred Luetjer and (First?) wife Mathilda have a nice big marker, while Jenny's is a smaller, flat one along side. Regrettably, Jenny's full dates were not on the marker as you can see.

I enjoy your website. Here's wishing you happy hunting and a bit of divine intervention,
