Note from K - there are photos of some of the children of John M. Wiggins & Loussign Ratcliffe on this site also.
The family of Loussign "Nancy" Ratliff as given by her descendant, Kelly Chapman, who like her ancestors before her, (for almost 200 years) still lives in the Hopkins County, Kentucky area, not far from where our ancestors were. Contact Kelley about her line.

Generation One
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LOUSSIGN "NANCY" RATCLIFFE (CONSTANT OGLESBY2 RATCLIFFE, JOHN1) was born September 24, 1845 in Tennessee (Source: Logan County Census 1850, 1860, 1850 Logan Co. census household # 579 lists Nancy age 5 born in TN. 1860 Logan Co. census household # 361-355 lists Nancy age 14 born in TN.), and died April 08, 1915 in Hopkins County Kentucky (Source: Hopkins County Cemetery Records.). She married JOHN MATHANIEL WIGGINS (Source: 1850 Christian County Kentucky Census - August 15, 1850, John Wiggins age 7, birthplace Kentucky.) February 22, 1866 in Christian County Kentucky (Source: Marriage License - Commonwealth of Kentucky.), son of WILLIAM WIGGINS and UNKNOWN. See John's death certificate here.

I ordered John Wiggins Civil War pension file, its huge, I was hoping there would be some info in it but all I found so far was that his fathers house burnt when John was young and everything was lost to the fire including the family Bible. He does state that his mothers name was Martha, but that hasn't been much help either. After reading over the file I think I figured out why he and Loussign divorced. It seems he was captured during a skirmish around Caldwell Co. and force marched into Trigg Co. during this march he suffered some sort of sun stroke and was never able to work again. I'm not so sure that most of his symptoms weren't in his head. Maybe some sort of anxiety attack or something, the army must have thought the same thing because he was turned down for his pension several times. Loussign must have gotten tired of his whining and sent him to the curb. Kelly Chapman, my 4th Cousin @ kelleychapman@onemain.com

More from Kelley: John was 6'1" with blue eyes and light hair and he weighed about 175 lbs. His occupation was listed as a farmer. I remember my Grandmother telling me that he didn't have a nose because cancer had eaten it off, the pension app. confirmed that and also the fact the he was completely blind in his later years. John was captured in a skirmish at Grubbs Crossroads in Caldwell County the end of August 1864. He was one of 15 captured that day and they were forced to march to Canton in Trigg Co. sometime during this march John became overheated and suffered a sunstroke. Within a few days he and his fellow captives were returned to their camp in Hopkinsville. All the affidavits in the pension file claim that John was in bad shape when he was brought back. He had a constant headache, was weak and unable to work. He was taken to the company surgeon who gave him some medication. He never recovered from the effects of the sunstroke, from then on he was bothered with a chronic headache, shortness of breath, back pain and he was unable to stand extreme hot or cold temperatures. The army eventually gave him a pension based on his claims. When you read over the pension file you get the impression that there was really nothing wrong with him, time after time he was sent before doctors to verify his claim that he was disabled and they kept saying that they could find nothing wrong with him. He finally got his pension but it was after he was on in years and in bad health. I don't think he every worked a day after he was discharged, that's probably why he and Loussign divorced, she got tired of trying to raise a family on no income. Bell must have felt sorry for him and took him in.

I was looking back over some records this morning and realized that Jane Wiggins Horsefield named her oldest daughter "Martha" maybe there is something to what John said in his application about his mothers name being Martha, and Jane named her daughter after her.
