THE FAMILY OF WILLIAM DYE & PHEBE MOUNTEER

William Dye & Phebe MounteerWilliam Dye & Phebe Mounteer were married on January 24, 1762 in New Jersey. They had 8 children. The family emigrated from Middlesex Co., New Jersey to Mason Co., Kentucky sometime between 1788 to 1793 with the Shotwell, Morris, Stout, Drake, Arms & Cahill families. William's brothers John & Kenneth also emigrated to Kentucky. William Dye purchased 300 acres of land in Mason Co., KY on May 3, 1793. (Deed book A, page 277, the spelling is William Die). In a book of memoirs written by Daniel Drake, he recounts visits to "Old Billy Dye's" house, which he says was "one of the fashionable places of resort for the young people of the neighborhood." The account by Dr. Drake is uncomplimentary, stating that "Old Billy" beat his slaves, and that his sons drank and his daughters were a disgrace to him. (William's youngest daughter Abigail had a child out of wedlock before marrying her first cousin Peter in 1805, so possibly she is the daughter referred to.) William Dye died on August 13, 1806 in Mason Co., KY. Phebe Mounteer Dye married her widowed brother-in-law, Kenneth Dye, on Sept. 16, 1815 in Mason Co., KY. Phebe Mounteer Dye died in 1818 in Mason Co., KY. In her will she left bequests to her children, and several to her granddaughter Eliza Dye, who was the illegitimate daughter of Abigail Dye.
