The first marriage of Thomas Jefferson Goodin:
| Thomas Jefferson Goodin & Mary Evaline Wiggins | Thomas Jefferson "Tom" Goodin married
Mary Evaline Wiggins on February 17, 1870 in Mercer Co., MO and they had 4
children. They are on the 1870 census of Lindley Township, Mercer, MO as Thomas
Goodwin, age 23, and wife Mary L.E. age 16. They are living next door to Tom's
brother James Goodwin & family at that time. Tom went to Kansas in 1879
and obtained a homestead in Rawlins Co., KS. He is listed on the 1880 census
of T2 R32, Rawlins Co., KS as T.J. Goodin, age 32, selling goods. Evaline is on
the census that same year with the 4 children under the age of 8, living by her
parents in Lindley Twp., Mercer Co., MO. I do not know if the separation was originally
due to difficulties in the marriage, but Tom remarried in 1882 and had a second
family. Evaline was remarried to Fernando Cortez "Cork" ("Cort"?)
Humphreys about 1884. Fernando was a widower with at least 4 children from
his first marriage. Fernando & Evaline had one daughter named Maud, born in
October 1885. Mary Evaline Wiggins Goodin Humphreys died June 1, 1887 in
Lindley Twp., Mercer Co., MO. She is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery,

is given as Time Keeper, and in 1930 it is Warehouse Clerk. Jennie is

| Nellie Goodin | Mary Ellen "Nellie"
Goodin was born on September 23, 1879 in Mercer Co., MO. Her father went to
Kansas in 1879, possibly before she was born. She is listed with her mother as
Mary, age 10 months, on the 1880 census of Lindley Twp., Mercer Co., MO. Her mother
died in 1887 when she was age 7. Nellie married Howard Sherman Dye on Feb
18, 1896 in Arkansas City, Cowley Co., KS, and they had 6 children. Howard Sherman
was a minister & ordained Elder in the Free Methodist church, and the family
lived in several places in Kansas before settling in McPherson, KS about 1920.
They are listed on the 1900 census of Creswell, Crowley Co., KS. They are on the
1910 census of Girard City, Crawford Co., KS; on the 1915 state census of Manhattan,
Riley Co., KS, and on the 1920 census of McPherson, McPherson Co., KS. In 1925
Howard Sherman left the church because of an extramarital affair. Family story
is that Nellie divorced him, and he is listed as being divorced on the 1930 census,
although Nellie is living at a different address & listed as married. When
I wrote the state of Kansas for the divorce record, they wrote back that they
did not have a record of the divorce. After they separated, Howard Sherman ran
a grocery store and Nellie ran a boarding house and did Bible readings. Howard
Sherman Dye died May 1941 in McPherson, McPherson Co., KS. Nellie nursed Howard
Sherman in his old age when he became ill and died in 1941 - when Nellie died
in 1958 Howard's grave was moved so that it was next to her, and they are buried
under the same marker that says "Blessed Be the Tie that Binds." |

He got into political trouble and twice had charges filed against him concerning county money. He was cleared both times but moved to OK by 1898. At some point the family began spelling the last name Goodwin. The family is on the 1900 census of Dewey, Oklahoma Co., OK, under the name T.J. Fleming and sons Glen & Albert Goodwin on the 1920 census of Twp 9, Placer Co, CA. Tom died on November 25, 1921 in Jones, Oklahoma Co., OK. His children and grandchildren who knew him all loved him and had fond memories of him. Ella died in 1926 in California. Ella regretted her second marriage and she and her husband separated.
