Lawrence left Kentucky in December 1837 and went to South Carolina with some horses and mules. In 1838 he was reported to be in Georgia. On November 16, 1939 Lawrence's property was sold for payment of debts he owed in Kentucky. Mary Ann is listed as head of household in 1840. Lawrence returned and the family moved to Illinois in 1841.
