John Gerrard was the son of Jacob Gerrard & Mahettable Buckles
Leah Busick was the daughter of Unknown parents. Family story says Leah may have been born in England yet Ohio is listed on the census records. Other spellings that have been found on Leah's maiden name include Bujic, Busie, Benzic, Buzick, and Benzie.

THE FAMILY OF JOHN GARRARD & LEAH BUSICK:

John Garrard & Leah BusickJohn Garrard married Leah Busick on March 7, 1831, in Madison Co. OH and they had at least 11 children. Their last name is spelled various ways on records - Gerrard, Garrard, Garard, etc. John served in the Ohio Militia. He and Leah are listed on the 1840 census of Union, Madison Co., OH. They are listed on the 1850 census of Somerfield, Madison Co., OH. About 1853 the family moved to Vermilion Co. Illinois, where their youngest child, George, was born. On the 1860 census of Georgetown, Vermilion Co., IL, Leah's name is listed as Sarah. A family story says John was a Colonel in the Civil War serving with his son, Jacob (John?) from 1861 to 1865. John and Leah sold land 11 Nov 1867, (DB18, p. 104. John signed his name and Leah made her mark). John Garrard died Feb 2, 1869 in Danville, Vermilion Co., IL. I have not found Leah in 1870 at this time. She is living with her son George and his family on the 1880 census of Blount Twp., Vermilion Co., IL. Leah died January 12, 1882 in Vermilion Co., IL. Leah's death record in the Vermilion Co. Clerk's Office gives her date of death as listed and age at death as 72y 11m 6d. This makes her date of birth different than what appears on the Family Group Sheets in Warren Co. Ohio. There is no tombstone inscription for Leah, and the tombstone inscription found in online Vermilion Co. Cemetery Records of 20 Feb 1863, is an error as Leah was alive through 1880.

The children of John Gerrard & Leah Busick:

Alpheus GerrardAlpheus G. Garrard was born on Sept 25, 1832 in Madison Co., OH. There is a male the right age to be Alphus, age 7, in the household of John Garard on the 1840 census of Union, Madison Co., OH. Alpheus was a civil and mining engineer. He is listed at age 17 with his parents on the 1850 census of Somerfield, Madison Co., OH. About 1853 his parents moved to Vermilion Co., IL, but I do not believe that Alpheus went with them, and that he instead emigrated west. He is listed on the 1860 census of Albany, Gentry Co., Missouri, with his occupation listed as Surveyer. He went further west in 1862 and settled in Nevada. He is listed as Alfred Gerard, age 35, b. IL on the 1870 census of Pine Grove Twp., Esmerelda, NV, and at that time his occupation was given as hotel keeper. Alpheus married Annie Burke sometime between 1871-1874. Annie is listed in the household next to his in 1870, and at that time she had a 4 year old son named Edward Burke. Alpheus was elected to the Nevada State Senate in 1872 where he served four years. On the 1875 census of Esmeralda Co., Nevada, A.(lpheus) Garrard is listed with wife A(nnie) and son E.(dward) Garrard, age 10.At that time Alpheus is listed as being a Civil Engineer and born in Ohio. He is listed as A. Garrard, Civil Engineer, age 44, b. OH on the 1880 census of Aurora, Esmeralda, Nevada, with a wife (only the first initial of A.) and an adopted daughter who is age 9, but her first name has been crossed out. Alpheus was elected to the Nevada State Assemby two terms, in 1888 and 1896. He moved from Nevada to California between 1886, and is listed as Alphus Gearrard, divorced, on the 1900 census of Antelope Twp, Mono Co., CA with the occupation C. E. and Mining Engineer. He returned from California to Nevada between 1900 to 1910, and on the 1910 census of Hawthorne, Esmeralda Co., NV he is listed as Alphus Gerrard, age 80, widowed, OH/KY/MD, Surveyor, mining. Alpheus Garrard died sometime after 1910, probably in Esmeralda Co., Nevada.

Amanda GerrardAmanda Garrard was born on Oct. 7, 1834 in Madison Co., OH. There is a female the right age to be Amanda, age 5, in the household of John Garard on the 1840 census of Union, Madison Co., OH. She is listed at age 15 with her parents on the 1850 census of Somerfield, Madison Co., OH. Amanda married Jonathan Soward on Sept 2, 1852 in Madison Co., OH I do not find any records of children for this marriage. Amanda Garrard Soward died sometime between 1852-1856, probably in Ohio. Jonathan K. Soward was remarried to Mary Evaline Helmer on November 23, 1856 in Champaign, Ohio, and they had at least 7 children. Jonathan & Mary E. are listed on the 1860 census of Fithian, Vermilion, Illinois, and the 1870 census of Pilot, Vermilion, Illinois. I have not found them in 1880, but they moved to Kansas by 1885, when they are listed on the census of Logan, Butler, Kansas. They are listed on the 1900 census of Union, Butler, Kansas. Records are confusing because Jonathan Soward (b. Aug 1829) had a younger brother John Kenton Soward (b. May 1838) who married Elizabeth L. Helmer, who was Mary Evaline Helmer Soward's younger sister. John K. and Elizabeth lived in Vermilion Co., Illinois and died there.
Mahettable Gerrard

Mahettable Gerrard was born on Feb 23, 1837 in OH. There is a female the right age to be Mahettable, age 4, in the household of John Garard on the 1840 census of Union, Madison Co., OH. Mahettable married John Samuel Dye on Oct. 21 1858 in Vermilion Co., IL - her last name is spelled both Gerrard and Garrard on the marriage record. John Samuel & Mahettable had 8 daughters and one son. The family is on the 1860 census of Georgetown, Vermilion Co., IL. John Samuel served in the Civil War and was wounded by a musket ball in his hand in 1864. When he returned from the war he had trouble farming due to his injury. The family is possibly on the 1870 census of Carroll, Vermilion Co., IL, although there is a lot of conflicting data on the 1870 (see notes). John Samuel Dye deserted his family in August 1877 and resettled in Kansas, where he began a second family. When he died in 1900, his second wife applied for his military pension, but the pension office asked for proof that John Samuel had been divorced from his first wife. Mahettable submitted an affadavit that John Samuel Dye had deserted her and that they had not divorced, and his pension was awarded to Mahettable. Mahettable is on the 1900 census of Danville Twp., Vermilion Co., IL, living with her married daughter Juanita Dye Boggs. Mahettable Gerrard Dye died on October 05, 1903 in Danville, Vermilion Co., IL.
