John Collins was born about 1770-1777 in Spartanburg, SC. His tombstone indicates that he was born in August 1770, but census records are more consistent with a birth year of 1777, and he is listed as being age 73 on the 1850 census. John was the son of unknown parents. I believe that his mother was Sarah "Sally" Collins who is listed as head of household on the 1800 census of Spartanburg Co, SC, and on the 1810 census of Christian Co., KY.
First Wife of John Collins was probably born about 1778. She was the daughter of unknown parents
Rhoda (maiden name?) Lampkins was born between 1771-1775 in Union, SC. She was the daughter of unknown parents. Lampkins is probably her married name as she was age 36-40 at the time of her marriage to John Collins. If she was widowed, possible first husbands for her are James, William or Austin/Astin Lampkins, who are all on the 1810 census of Christian Co., KY with a wife age 26-45.

THE FAMILIES OF JOHN COLLINS

First marriage:
NOTE - This marriage is hypothetical, based on the fact that John Collins is living near Joseph Collins in 1850, and that John is old enough to be the father of Joseph. This marriage needs to be documented - it could be that Joseph is a nephew or other relation to John.

John Collins & First WifeJohn Collins & his first wife were married about 1798, probably in South Carolina. They had at least one son, who was born about 1799 in SC. There are persons the right age to be John, age 23, his wife, age 16-26, and son Joseph, age 1, in the household of Sarah Collins on the 1800 census of Spartanburg, SC.(There is also a John Collins household in Spartanburg, SC in 1800, but the head of household is over 45.) There is not a census for Kentucky in 1800. I do not find John Collins at age 33 in 1810, but Sarah Collins is listed as head of household on the 1810 census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY, with a male in her household who could be Joseph, age 11, and an unidentified male and female, both age 16-26 who could be John and/or his wife if there were census taker error on John's age. The first wife of John Collins probably died sometime before 1811, when John was remarried to Rhoda Lampkins in Christian Co., Kentucky. See below for more information on this second marriage.

The Children of John Collins & First Wife:

Joseph Collins Joseph Collins was born about 1799 in South Carolina. There are persons the right age to be his parents and himself (age 1) in the household of Sarah Collins on the 1800 census of Spartanburg, SC. There is a male the right age to be Joseph (age 11) in the household of Sarah Collins on the 1810 census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY. I do not find Joseph's father (?) John Collins, age 33, on the 1810 census unless he is mistakenly listed as the male age 16-26 in the household of Sarah Collins that year. John Collins was remarried to Rhoda Lampkins in 1811. Joseph (age 21) is probably the male age 19-26 in the household of Sally Collins on the 1820 census of Christian Co., KY, listed next door to the household of Shadrack Lantrip. Joseph married Elizabeth Lantrip on October 7, 1820 in Christian Co., KY and they had 10 children. The family is listed on the 1850, 1860 & 1870 censuses of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY. Joseph's occupation is listed as Farmer on all censuses. In 1860, Elizabeth's occupation is listed as Midwife. Joseph is listed as age 80, born SC with both parents born SC with his family on the 1880 census of Scates Mill, Christian Co. KY . Joseph Collins died in 1894 in Christian Co., KY. He was about age 94 when he died. Elizabeth died the same year, on May 7, 1894, in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY.

Second marriage:

The Children of John Collins & Rhoda Lampkins:

John Collins & Rhoda LampkinsJohn Collins & Rhoda Lampkins were married on July 22, 1811 in Christian Co., KY. At the time of this marriage, John was age 34 and Rhoda was age 36-40. Rhoda was probably the widow of James, William or Austin/Astin Lampkins, who are all on the 1810 census of Christian Co., KY with a wife age 26-45. Census records indicate that John & Rhoda Collins had at least 3 children. The family is listed on the 1820, 1830 & 1840 censuses of Christian Co., KY; in 1820 the town they are living in is listed as Hopkinsville. Rhoda (maiden name?) Lampkins Collins died between 1840-1850 in Christian Co., KY or Missouri. John is listed at age 73 on the 1850 census of District 2, Christian Co., KY. In 1857, John's son-in-law Elijah Wiggins went to Christian Co., KY from Mercer Co., MO for the purpose of bringing John Collins back to Mercer Co., MO with him, along with a negro woman that John owned at the time. Elijah later filed for reimbursement for $100 from John's estate for the expenses of this trip, stating that he had gone there at John's request. Elijah also filed for reimbursement from John's estate for $540 for the boarding & clothing of John & the negro woman for the 72 weeks that John lived with them until he died. John Collins died on November 13, 1858 in Mercer Co., MO. His estate listed heirs Rhoda Collins Wiggins, and Louisa Collins, who may have been a daughter or granddaughter.

Unknown Daughter (Louisa?) CollinsUnknown Daughter Collins was born between 1811-1815 in Christian Co., KY. She was possibly named Louisa. There is a female the right age group to be this daughter, age 5- 9 in the household of John Collins on the 1820 census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY. There is a female the right age group to be this daughter, age 15-19 in 1830, and age 25-29 in 1840, both in the household of John Collins in Christian Co., KY. There is also a Louisa Collins who was born in 1834 who married Robert Price who has been confused with this daughter, but I think the younger one was her niece. Unknown Daughter (Louisa?) Collins died sometime after 1840, probably in Christian Co., KY. I do not know if she ever married.

Unknown Son Collins probably died
Notes for Unknown Son Collins
Rhoda CollinsRhoda Collins was born on June 02, 1817 in Christian Co., KY. There is a female the right age to be her on the 1820, 1830 & 1840 censuses of Christian Co., KY. In 1820 the town is listed as Hopkinsville. Rhoda married Elijah Wiggins on April 19, 1842 in Christian Co., KY and they had 10 children. In 1846 they traveled to Mercer Co., Missouri in a covered wagon. The site they chose for their home was about a mile and one-half west of Little River, a branch of Weldon Fork. Here they built a double-sized log cabin. It was a beautiful location and was to remain Elijah's home until his death in 1891. The family is on the 1850 census of District 56, Mercer Co., MO. Elijah owned a saw mill on the west bank of Little River - it became Mercer County's eleventh United States Post Office on March 23, 1858. Elijah was appointed postmaster, and the office was named Wiggins Mill. The family is listed on the 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses of Lindley Twp., Mercer Co., MO. Elijah G. Wiggins died on February 03, 1891 in Lindley Twp, Mercer Co., MO. Rhoda is on the 1900 census of Lindley Twp., living by her married daughter Ursula Waldron & her family. Rhoda Collins Wiggins died on March 13, 1909 in Lindley Twp, Mercer Co., MO. Elijah & Rhoda are both buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lindley Township. When their old log house was torn down about 1909, a cache of $400 in gold coins was found under the hearth stones. It had been a "rainy-day" savings account.

Daughter or granddaughter of John Collins & Rhoda Lampkins:

Louisa Ann Collins Louisa Ann Collins was born in July 1834 in Kentucky. Her guardianship was given to John & Mary Davis at an early age. There is not a female the right age group to be Louisa, age 5 in the household of John Collins on the 1840 census of Christian Co., KY, but there is a male age 0-4 who I have not identifed who may be her if there was census taker error on both her sex and age. There is a female the right age to be Louisa, age 5, in the household of John Davis on the 1840 census of Christian Co., KY, living near the households of John Collins & William Wiggins. Louisa is listed at age 15 as Louisa A. Davis in the household of John & Mary Davis on the 1850 census of District 1, Christian Co., KYI. Louisa married Robert L. Price on August 14, 1851 in Christian Co., KY; on the marriage paperwork, John & Mary Davis signed a paper giving their permission for "our daughter Louise Collins" to marry Robert L. Price. Robert & Louisa had 2 sons. When John Collins died without a will on November 13, 1858 in Mercer Co., MO, Louisa Ann Price was listed as one of his two heirs, indicating that she is either his child or his grandchild (if she was a child of one of his deceased children). The other heir was Rhoda (Collins) Wiggins. Robert & Louisa Price are listed on the 1860 census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY. They are listed on the 1870 census of Fruit Hill Pct (Post Office Hopkinsville), Christian Co., KY. The family is on the 1880 census of Stewarts, Christian Co., KY. They are listed on the 1900 census of District 8, Crofton Co., KY. Robert Price is listed on all census records as being a farmer. In 1900, Louisa was listed as age 65, born July 1834, with 2 births and 1 surviving child at that time. Louisa Ann Collins Price died sometime between 1900-1910, probably in Christian Co., KY. Robert Price died on May 17, 1916 in Christian Co., KY. Children of Robert Price & Louisa Collins are: William (1853) & Zachariah Franklin (1854).
