Jacob Garrard & Mahettable Buckles Jacob Garrard married Mahettable Buckles in 1797 in Ohio, possibly Champaign County. Jacob & Mahettable were first cousins - Jacob's father & Mahettable's mother were siblings. Jacob & Mahettable had 7 children, all born in Ohio. Jacob is listed on tax records in 1806 in Warren Co., OH. Jacob served in the War of 1812, and he also bought land in Warren Co., OH in 1812. The family moved from Warren to Clark Co., OH sometime between 1812 to 1819, and they are listed on the 1820 census of Harmony, Clark Co., OH. They moved from Clark County to Madison Co., OH about 1823. In 1829, Jacob erected a gristmill on Oak Run in Madison Co., OH, and soon after he built a distillery. The family is listed on the 1830 census of Union, Madison Co., OH living next to the household of their married son James Garrard. Mahettable Buckles Garrard died on October 08, 1836 in Madison Co., Ohio. Jacob remarried in 1837 to Martha Hollar. (See info on this marriage further down on this page)

Mary Garrard

Mary Garrard was born on March 17, 1798 in Warren Co., OH. Her father is listed in Warren Co. OH on tax records in 1806 & land records in 1812. Her parents moved from Warren to Clark Co., OH between 1812 to 1819. Mary married David Smith on August 22, 1819 in Clark Co., OH. They had one son, James Jackson Smith, who was born in 1822. David died about 1824 and Mary married Robert Buckles on December 30, 1824 in Clark Co., OH. Robert & Mary were first cousins as Robert's father John Buckles was brother to Mary's mother Mahettable Buckles Garard. They were also second cousisns (Robert's grandmother Sarah Garard was sister of Mary's grandfather Jonah Garard.) There is a household for Robert Buckels on the 1830 & 1840 censuses of Jackson, Champaign Co., OH with numbers that would fit this family. Robert & Mary had at least one daughter, Mary, born about 1835. The family emigrated from Ohio to Indiana sometime between 1840 to 1850. They are listed on the 1850 census of Centre Twp., Union Co., IN. Robert died in Liberty, Union Co., Indiana. I have not found Robert or Mary on any other census records. I have information that Mary died after 1882 in Illinois, but I have found no documentation to confirm that at this time. Mary Garrard Buckles died sometime after 1850, but I don't know when or where.

His parents moved from Warren to Clark Co., OH between 1812 to 1819. There is a male the right age to be Jonah, age 18, in the household of Jacob Garrard on the 1820 census of Harmony, Clark Co., OH. Jonah never married. He is living with his parents at age 28 on the 1830 census of Union Twp, Madison Co., OH. There is a male age 40-50 in the household of Jacob Garrard on the 1840 census of Union, Madison Co., OH that is probably Jonah, age 38. He died at the age of 46. Jonah Garrard died in 1848 in Madison Co., OH.

Her parents moved from Warren to Clark Co., OH between 1812 to 1819. There is a female the right age to be Eliza, age 14, in the household of Jacob Garrard on the 1820 census of Harmony, Clark Co., OH.She is living with her parents at age on the 1830 census of Union Twp, Madison Co., OH. Eliza married John Forbes on Dec. 13, 1835 in Madison Co., OH. They are listed on the 1840 census of Union, Madison Co, OH. I have not found them in 1850 at this time. The family moved to Indiana in 1854. They are listed on the 1860 census of Eugene Twp., Vermillion Co., IN. The family moved from Indiana to Illinois sometime between 1860 to 1870, and they are listed on the 1870 & 1880 censuses of Elwood, Vermilion Co., IL. I have not found them in 1900 at this time. Eliza Garrard died sometime after 1880, probably before 1900 in Vermilion Co., IL.

John R. Garrard John R. Garrard was born on February 14, 1808 in Warren Co., OH. His father is listed in Warren Co. OH on land records in 1812. His parents moved from Warren to Clark Co., OH between 1812 to 1819.There is a male the right age to be John, age 12, in the household of Jacob Garrard on the 1820 census of Harmony, Clark Co., OH. He is living with his parents at age 22 on the 1830 census of Union Twp, Madison Co., OH. John married Leah Busick on March 7, 1831, in Madison Co. OH and they had at least 11 children. Their last name is spelled various ways on records - Gerrard, Garrard, Garard, etc. John served in the Ohio Militia. He and Leah are listed on the 1840 census of Union, Madison Co., OH, living near the households of John's brothers Stephen & James. They are listed on the 1850 censuses of Somerfield, Madison Co., OH. About 1853 the family moved to Vermilion Co. Illinois, where their youngest child, George, was born. On the 1860 census of Georgetown, Vermilion Co., IL, Leah's name is listed as Sarah. A family story says John was a Colonel in the Civil War serving with his son, Jacob (John?) from 1861 to 1865. The story also says Leah may have been born in England, but Ohio is listed on the census records. Various spellings have been found on Leah's surname: Bujic, Busie, Benzic, Buzick, and Benzie. John Gerrard died Feb 2, 1869 in Danville, Vermilion Co., IL. I have not found Leah in 1870 at this time. She is living with her son George and his family on the 1880 census of Blount Twp., Vermilion Co., IL. Leah died January 12, 1882 in Vermilion Co., IL. Leah's death record in the Vermilion Co. Clerk's Office gives her date of death as listed and age at death as 72y 11m 6d. This makes her date of birth different than what appears on the Family Group Sheets in Warren Co. Ohio. There is no tombstone inscription for Leah. The tombstone inscription found in the Vermilion Co. Cemetery Records, 20 Feb 1863, is not correct as John and Leah sold land 11 Nov 1867, DB18, p. 104. John signed his name and Leah made her mark.

Joseph's occupation is listed in 1850 as Merchant, in 1860 as Grocery Dealer, in 1870 as Clerk in Grocery with son Wesley listed as Retail Grocer, and in 1880 as Salesman. Joseph died on November 23, 1880 in Marysville, Union Co., Ohio.

His father died in 1845 when Martin Van Buren was about age 7. He is listed with his mother on the 1850 & 1860 censuses South Salem, Ross Co., OH, . In 1850 he is listed as Van Buren, age 12, and in 1860 he is listed as Martin V., age 22, occupation School Teacher. Martin Van Buren Garrard died in the Civil War (1861-1865) in South Carolina.

In both 1850 & 1860 his name is listed as Jefferson, but on all later records I have found for him listed as Thomas. Thomas married Mattie A. Howard on November 15, 1865 in Ross Co., OH, and they had one son. I have not found the family on the 1870 census at this time. They are listed on the 1880 & 1900 censuses of Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana. Thomas Jefferson Garrard died between 1900 to 1910, probably in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana. Martha is listed as widowed on the 1910 census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN.
