Sherman Dye married Mary Ellen "Nellie" Goodin on Feb
18, 1896 in Arkansas City, Cowley Co., KS, and they had 6 children. Howard
Sherman was a minister & ordained Elder in the Free Methodist church, and
the family lived in several places in Kansas before settling in McPherson, KS
about 1920. They are listed on the 1900 census of Creswell, Crowley Co., KS; on
the 1910 census of Girard City, Crawford Co., KS; on the 1915 state census of
Manhattan, Riley Co., KS, and on the 1920 census of McPherson, McPherson Co.,
KS. In 1925 Howard Sherman left the church because of an extramarital affair.
Family story is that Nellie divorced him, and he is listed as being divorced on
the 1930 census, although Nellie is living at a different address & listed
as married. When I wrote the state of Kansas for the divorce record, they wrote
back that they did not have a record of the divorce. After they separated, Howard
Sherman ran a grocery store and Nellie ran a boarding house and did Bible readings.
Howard Sherman Dye died May 1941 in McPherson, McPherson Co., KS. Nellie
nursed Howard Sherman in his old age when he became ill and died in 1941 - when
Nellie died in 1958 Howard's grave was moved so that it was next to her, and they
are buried under the same marker that says "Blessed Be the Tie that Binds." Notes for Howard Sherman Dye Photos of Howard Sherman Dye Notes for Mary Ellen "Nellie" Goodin Dye |
