Note from Kari: This family is included on this website because second wife Mary Evaline Wiggins Goodin was my gg-grandmother, and their daughter Maude was a half-sister of my g-grandmother Mary Ellen "Nellie" Goodin Dye. Maude was age 1-1/2 when her mother died, and she was very close to her Humphreys half-siblings and their children, several of whom were close in age to Maude. Fernando Cortez Humphreys was born on October 10, 1833 in Greenbrier, West Virginia. He was the son of William Humphreys & Rachel Spencer. The family mainly used the spelling Humphreys, although it is also spelled Humphries on several records including Fernando's gravestone.
Mary Jane McGrew was born about 1835 in Ohio
Mary Evaline Wiggins was born on May 8, 1854 in Mercer Co., Missouri. She was the daughter of Elijah Wiggins & Rhoda Collins.
Louisa Rothrock was born in November 1867 in Indiana. She was the daughter of Unknown Parents.
Henrietta Duxbury was born on November 6, 1863 in Preston, Fillmore Co., Minnesota. She was the daughter of George Duxbury & Mary Elizabeth Mills.

The family moved to Missouri sometime between 1870-1880, and Rachel came with them. She is listed as a servant in the household of Rush Bowser on the 1880 census of Princeton, Mercer Co., Missouri, where her widowed father and siblings were also living that year. Rachel's father was remarried to Mary Evaline Wiggins Goodin in 1884. Rachel married Charles Patrick Cosgrove on March 2, 1886 in Liberty, Clay, Missouri, and they had one daughter, Purllue. They divorced, and Rachel was married second to John Robert Cooper in Lake Park, Dickinson Co., Iowa. Robert & Rachel had 3 more children. The family is listed on the 1900 census of Lake Park, Dickinson, Iowa, with Robert's occupation listed as "Restaurant". Robert Cooper died on September 24, 1903 in Harris, Osceola, Iowa, and sometime after his death Rachel moved to South Dakota. She is listed on the 1910 & 1920 censuses of Butte, Lyman, South Dakota. She is listed on the 1930 census of Reliance, Lyman, South Dakota living near married son Jay Cosgrove . She is listed at age 81 in the household of her married daughter Purllue on the 1940 census of Rex, Lyman Co., South Dakota. Rachel Anne Humphreys Cosgrove Cooper died on September 19, 1946 in Davison Co., South Dakota. She is buried in Reliance Cemetery, Lyman Co., South Dakota. Child of Rachel Humphreys & Charles Cosgrove was Purrlue (1887) Cosgrove. Children of Rachel Humphreys & Robert Cooper were Thomas (1896), Flossie (1898) & Althea (1900) Cooper.

Her mother died in 1874 when Mae was about age 14. The family moved to Missouri sometime between 1870-1880. "Mary" is listed at age 20 with her widowed father and siblings on the 1880 census of Princeton, Mercer Co., Missouri. According to family story, Mae had a son with a Mr. Ballew in 1884, and named the son Jay W. Cosgrove to avoid scandal as she was a servant in the Ballew household at the time. Mae was married to John Douglas Fritz in 1891, and they had two daughters. The family is listed on the 1900 census of Flambeau Twp (Ladysmith), Cheppewa, Wisconsin. They are listed on the 1905 & 1910 censuses of Ladysmith, Rusk Co., Wisconsin. Mary "Mae" V. Humphreys Cosgrove Fritz died in 1919 in Ladysmith, Rusk Co., Wisconsin. John is listed as widowed on the 1920 & 1930 censuses of Ladysmith, Rusk Co., Wisconsin, and he died in April 1948. John & Mae Fritz are both buried in Riverside Cemetery, Ladysmith, Rusk Co., Wisconsin. Child of Mae Humphreys & Mr. Ballew is: Jay (1885) Cosgrove. Children of May Humphreys & John Douglas Fritz are: Blanche (1893) & Edna (1894) Fritz.

Edward died on June 29, 1931. Edward & Elma are buried together in Baker Cemetery, Norwich, Page Co., Iowa.

Dollie is listed on the 1910 census of Butte, Lyman, South Dakota living with daughter Nettie, who had married her first cousin Jay W. Cosgrove, son of Mae Humphreys Fritz. Dollie is listed on the 1920 census of Electioin District 8, Niobrara, Wyoming with her three youngest children, Icy, William & Gurney. She is listed on the 1930 census of Long Beach, Los Angeles, California. Dollie died on October 31, 1940 in Sheridan, Sheridan Co., Wyoming. Fernando was a widower with 6 children from his first marriage, and Mary Evaline was divorced from first husband Thomas Jefferson Goodin, and they had 4 children. Fernando & Evaline had one daughter named Maude, born on October 7, 1885. Mary Evaline Wiggins Goodin Humphreys died June 1, 1887 in Lindley Twp., Mercer Co., Missouri. She is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Lindley Township,Mercer Co.,Missouri. Her tombstone says Mary E. Humphreys, age: 33y 23d. Fernando Humphrey emigrated to South Dakota sometime between 1880-1890 with daughter Maude, who was age 1-1/2 when her mother died. He is listed on the 1890 Veteran's schedule of McCook Co., South Dakota, Fernando He married at least twice more; to Louisa Rothrock about 1900, with whom he had a child who died in infancy, and to Henrietta Duxbury on September 14, 1903. Maude E. HumphreysMaude E. Humphreys was born on October 7, 1885 in Mercer Co., Missouri. Her mother died on June 1, 1887 when Maude was age 1-1/2. Maude's father remarried Louisa Rothrock about 1900 when Maude was about age 14. Maude is listed with her father & stepmother on the 1900 census of Spencer, McCook Co., South Dakota. Maude married Wesley Rickord on February 17, 1905 in Salem, McCook, South Dakota and they had 3 children. The family is listed on the 1910 census of Dearborn, Beadle, South Dakota. They were living in Huron, South Dakota when Wesley filled out his WWI draft card in 1918. They are listed on the 1920 census of Virgil, Beadle Co., South Dakota. The 1940 census indicates that the family was still living in Virgil, Beadle, South Dakota in 1935, but by 1940 they were living in Mena, Polk, Arkansas. The family moved again to Illinois, and Wesley died on April 16, 1949 in Cook Co., Illinois. Maude E. Humphreys Rickord died in May 1969 in Round Lake, Lake Co., Illinois. They are listed with daughter Maude from Fernando's second marriage on the 1900 census of Spencer, McCook Co., South Dakota; the years married for both was left blank, so I have assumed they had been married less than a year at that time. Fernando & Louisa had a child born in 1901 who also died in 1901. Louisa Rothrock Humphreys died in 1902 in McCook Co., South Dakota.

Fernando Cortez Humphreys & Henrietta Duxbury DunnFernando Cortez Humphreys & Henrietta Duxbury Dunn were married on September 14, 1903 in Pearl, McCook, South Dakota. Henrietta died on August 29, 1936 in Pullyap, Pierce, Washington. Henrietta is buried in Sumner Cemetery, Sumner, Pierce Co., Washington.
