THE FAMILY OF LODOWICK BUSH & MAGDALENA FORSHEE
| Lodowick Bush & Magdalena Forshee | Lodowick Bush
& Magdalena Forshee were married about 1787 in NJ or NY and they had 14 children,
12 of whom lived to adulthood. The family is on the 1790 census of Haverstraw
Town, Orange Co. (became Rockland Co., in 1798), NY. They had children who were
christened at the Paramus Dutch Reformed Church in Saddle River, Bergen Co., NJ
in 1788, 1790, 1792, 1794, 1798 & 1799. I have not located him on the 1800
or 1810 censuses at this time, but they were probably in Bergen Co., NJ - the
1800 & 1810 censuses for NJ were destroyed in the War of 1812. Lodowick &
Magdalena had a daughter in 1801 that later census records state was born in NJ.
They had children christened in the Paramus church in 1801 & 1803. In 1804
they are referred to in a land deed in Bergen Co., NJ as "Lodowick Bush of
New Hemsted in the County of Rockland, State of New York, and Helena, his wife",
and they are mentioned in another Bergen Co., NJ land deed in 1805. They had children
christened in the Paramus church in 1808 and on July 1, 1810. In 1812 they are
listed in another Bergen Co., NJ land deed as "Lodiwick Bush of County of
Bergen and Lenah, his wife". They had children christened in the Paramus
church in 1813 & May 1816. That same year the family moved from Bergen Co.,
NJ to Ontario Co., NY. Lodowick is listed on the Grantee Deed Index for Ontario
County, NY as making 3 purchases of land in 1816, and he is on tax records for
Benton, Ontario Co., NY in 1816. The family is listed on the 1820 census of Benton,
Ontario Co., NY; at that time their widowed daughter Margaret Bush Van Winkle
had come to live with them with her children. Lodowick is listed on tax records
for Benton in 1821 & 1822; in 1822 one of his properties was a saw mill. Yates
Co., NY was formed from parts of Ontario & Steuben counties in 1823, and the
family is listed on the 1830 census of Benton, Yates Co., NY. Sometime between
1830 to 1839 Lodowick & Magdalena moved to Romulus, Seneca Co., NY. Lodowick
Bush died on September 13, 1839 in Romulus, Seneca Co., NY. Madgdalena died the
next month on October 19, 1839 in Romulus, Seneca Co., NY. Lodowick &
Magdalena are both buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Torrey, Yates Co., NY. Notes for Lodowick Bush Notes for Magdalena Forshee |
The Children of Lodowick Bush & Magdalena Forshee:
| 1) Margaret Bush | Margaret Bush was born on November 22,
1788 in Bergen, New Jersey. She was christened Grietje Bos on December
21, 1788 at the Paramus Dutch Reformed Church in Bergen Co., NJ. Margaret is living
with her parents on the 1790 census of Haverstraw Town, Orange Co., NY; this area
became Rockland Co., NY in 1798. I have not found her parents on the 1800 or 1810
censuses, but census records for New Jersey for those years were destroyed in
the War of 1812. Her parents had a daughter who was born in NJ in 1801, were listed
on land records as living in New Hemsted, Rockland Co., NY in 1804, and in Bergen
Co., NJ in 1812. Margaret married Albert R. Van Winkle on April 13, 1811
in the Paramus Church in Bergen Co., NJ and they had 3 children. Albert is on
the tax lists for Saddle River, Bergen Co., NJ in 1813, 1814 & 1816. Albert
Van Winkle probably died between 1816 & 1820, because Margaret is on the 1820
census of Ontario Co., NY with her 3 children, living with her parents (Lodowick
& Magdalena Bush) who had emigrated there sometime between 1816 to 1820. I
have not found her in 1830; she is not listed with her parents at that time. An
1840 list of members of the First Baptist Church at Benton Center, Yates County,
NY shows Van Winkle, Margaret, bpt. 11/23. Margaret is listed in the household
of her married brother John L. Bush on the 1840, 1850, & 1860 censuses of
Benton, Yates Co., NY. Margaret Bush Van Winkle died on June 26, 1864 in Benton,
Yates Co., NY. Of her 3 children, one son died young, another son, Jacob,
died at age 19, and her daughter Hannah, who was the only child to marry and have
children, probably died before 1854.
| 2) Barney Bush | Bernard "Barney" Bush
was born May 07, 1790 in Haverstraw, Orange, New York or Bergen, New Jersey.
He was christened Barend Bos on August 3, 1790 at the Paramus Dutch Reformed
Church in Bergen Co., NJ. He is living with his parents on the 1790 census of
Haverstraw Town, Orange Co., NY; this area became Rockland Co., NY in 1798. I
have not found his parents on the 1800 or 1810 censuses, but census records for
New Jersey for those years were destroyed in the War of 1812. His parents had
a daughter who was born in NJ in 1801, were listed on land records as living in
New Hemsted, Rockland Co., NY in 1804, and in Bergen Co., NJ in 1812. His parents
moved from Bergen Co., NJ to Ontario (later Yates) Co., NY in 1816. I have not
found him on the 1820 census, but he is probably in Benton, Ontario Co., NY with
one of his Bush relatives. Barney married Mary Forshee about 1823, which
is also when Yates Co., NY was formed from parts of Ontario & Steuben counties.
They had at least 4 children. The family is listed on the 1830, 1835, 1840 &
1850 censuses of Benton, Yates Co., NY. Mary died on March 23, 1857, probably
in Yates Co., NY. Barney is listed on the 1860 & 1870 censuses of Torrey,
Yates Co., NY; in 1860 he is head of household with 2 daughters at home, and in
1870 he is age 80 and living with his married daughter Rebecca Mapes. Bernard
"Barney" Bush died on July 26, 1870 in Torrey, Yates Co., NY. He
is buried with his wife and parents in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Torrey, Yates
Co., NY. Notes for Bernard "Barney" Bush
| 3)Peter Bush | Peter Bush was born Feb. 22, 1792 probably in Orange (became Rockland in 1798) Co., NY or Bergen Co., NJ. He was christened Pieter Bosch on June 16, 1792 at the Paramus Dutch Reformed Church in Bergen Co., NJ. Peter Bush probably died before 1794, when another son was born to this family and also named Peter. | |
| 4) Peter Bush | Peter L. Bush was born on May 22, 1794 in Bergen
Co., NJ. His middle name may have been Lodowick. He is listed on all census
records as being born in New Jersey. He was christened Pieter Bos on June
29, 1794 at the Paramus Dutch Reformed Church in Bergen Co., NJ. I have not found
his parents on the 1800 or 1810 censuses, but census records for New Jersey for
those years were destroyed in the War of 1812. His parents had a daughter who
was born in NJ in 1801, were listed on land records as living in New Hemsted,
Rockland Co., NY in 1804, and in Bergen Co., NJ in 1812. His parents moved from
Bergen Co., NJ to Ontario (later Yates) Co., NY in 1816. Peter married Unknown
First Wife sometime between 1816-1820, probably in Benton, Ontario Co., NY,
and census records indicate they had at least 2 children. the family is listed
on the 1820 census of Benton, Ontario Co., NY. Peter is listed on the 1820 census
& 1822 tax list of Benton, Ontario Co., NY. The family moved from Ontario
to Seneca Co., NY sometime between 1822-1830, and they are listed on the 1830
census of Varick, Seneca Co., NY. Peter's first wife died between 1830-1838, probably
in Varick, Seneca Co., NY. Peter married Elenor "Ellen" Denniston
about 1838, probably in Seneca Co., NY, and they had at least 3 children. The
family is listed on the 1850 & 1860 censuses of Varick, Seneca Co., NY. They
moved from Seneca to Ontario County between 1860-1870, and they are listed on
the 1870 census of Seneca, Ontario Co., NY, and on the 1875 state census of Geneva,
Ontario Co., NY. Peter L. Bush probably died between 1875-1880 in Geneva, Ontario
Co., New York. There is an Elinor Bush who is the right age (67) who is listed
as head of household on the 1880 census of Geneva, Ontario Co., NY with widowed
daughter Louisa Alleman, who is the right age to be a daughter that is listed
on earlier census records as being named Hannah. Elinor is listed in 1880 as being
married, not widowed, but there is no husband in the household and I think it
was census taker error. Notes for Peter L. Bush
| 5) John L. Bush | John L. Bush was born January 22, 1798 in
Orange (later Rockland) Co., NY or Bergen Co., NJ. His middle name may have
been Lodowick. He was christened John Bos on February 11, 1798 at the Paramus
Dutch Reformed Church in Bergen Co., NJ. I have not found his parents on the 1800
or 1810 censuses, but census records for New Jersey for those years were destroyed
in the War of 1812. His parents had a daughter who was born in NJ in 1801, were
listed on land records as living in New Hemsted, Rockland Co., NY in 1804, and
in Bergen Co., NJ in 1812. His parents moved to in Ontario Co., NY in 1816, and
John is living with his parents on the 1820 census of Benton, Ontario Co., NY.
John married Hannah H. Coddington about 1822, and they had 7 children.
In 1823 Yates Co., NY was formed from parts of Ontario & Steuben counties.
The family is listed on the 1830, 1835, 1840, 1850 & 1860 censuses of Benton,
Yates Co., NY. In 1850 & 1860, John's widowed sister Margaret Bush Van Winkle
is also living with them. John L. Bush died on December 1, 1863 in Benton,
Yates Co., NY. Mary died on May 1, 1875, probably in Yates Co., NY. John &
Mary are buried in the Bellona Cemetery, Yates Co., NY. Notes for John L. Bush
| 6) Andrew Bush | Andrew Bush was born May 06,
1799 in NY or NJ. The 1850 census record lists his birthplace as NY, and the
1860 lists it as NJ. He was christened Andrias Bos on July 7, 1799 at the
Paramus Dutch Reformed Church in Bergen Co., NJ. I have not found his parents
on the 1800 or 1810 censuses, but census records for New Jersey for those years
were destroyed in the War of 1812. His parents had a daughter who was born in
NJ in 1801, were listed on land records as living in New Hemsted, Rockland Co.,
NY in 1804, and in Bergen Co., NJ in 1812. Andrew's parents moved to Ontario (later

1834 to 1837, and Andrew remarried a second wife, name unknown, about 1837.
They had a daughter Frances, born about 1838. His second wife died sometime between
1838 to 1847, and sometime between 1840 to 1850 Andrew emigrated from New York
to Michigan. Andrew married Elizabeth Carbon about 1847 in NY or MI, and
they had two more children, born in 1848 & 1853. The family is listed on the
1850 & 1860 censuses of Saline, Washtenaw Co., MI. They are possibly the Andrew
& Jane Bush who are listed in Ida, Monroe Co., MI in 1870. I have not found
either of them on the 1880 census. Andrew Bush died sometime after 1860, probably
sometime between 1870 to 1880 in Michigan.

11, 1801 at the Paramus Dutch Reformed Church in Bergen Co., NJ. I have not found
her parents on the 1800 or 1810 censuses, but census records for New Jersey for
those years were destroyed in the War of 1812. The 1850 & 1860 censuses both
list Frances Cynthia as being born in NJ in 1801, and her parents were listed
on land records as living in New Hemsted, Rockland Co., NY in 1804, and in Bergen

1840 & 1850 censuses of Varick, Seneca Co., NY. At some time between 1850
to 1860 the family moved to Michigan, and they are listed on the 1860 census of
Lodi, Washtenaw Co., MI. She is listed as Cynthia on the 1850, and as Frances
C. on the 1860 census. I have not found either John or Frances Cynthia on the
1870 census at this time. They are not living with son David & daughter Mary,
who were living with them in 1860. Frances Cynthia Bush Van Gieson died sometime
after 1860 and possibly before 1870 in Lodi, Washtenaw Co., MI. Notes for Frances Cynthia Bush Van Gieson

b. Nov 1844 and died June 6, 1845, son of Daniel Denniston & Hannah, who may
be this family. According to a county history, Hannah was married and living in
Orleans Co., NY in 1873, but I have not found the family on any census records
at this time. Hannah Bush Dennison died sometime after 1873, probably in Orleans
Co. NY but not for sure. | |
